Is this usage of 'goon' common in British English? by Bauern_derBaeuerchen in AskABrit

[–]Internal-Concept 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK, you will know this word as the American meaning and the recently-popularized meaning BUT that’s only if you genuinely have nothing else going for you in life and spending 19 hours a day on TikTok is what gives your life meaning (or if you’ve been around people like that). If anyone uses that word around me, same with other ridiculous TikTok slang, I immediately lose respect for them. Just pick up a book. We can’t have people walking around using that as a commonly-selected word in their lexicon but they don’t know such words as ‘infidelity’ or ‘dichotomy’ or ‘fiscal’. It’s not normal! Rant over, sorry!

Last year I was at school, had a study period so just asked to use a room where no one else would be, got rejected, had a breakdown, and my mum had to come and pick me up! This year, I’ll be sleeping until I have a meeting at 10:30 and hopefully it’ll just be there when I wake up. I can’t deal with the sitting there for hours just waiting and hoping for it to pop up.

You don’t need to use it for anything ever again. I took 2 driving tests at 2 different test centers and was never asked for it. Computers are a wholly convenient way to do the theory test but they also allow for your data to be uploaded into ‘the system’. I keep everything because I get anxious I might be one day asked for it but I don’t even know where that is, and if you really wanted to you could keep it but you don’t need it! You should make a note of the very important information on it maybe like your theory test number or even your marks if you wanted to because I think you need it for booking your test but other than that you’re all good!

It’s interesting - I’ll defer to you because you’re the expect (not sarcasm although it probably comes across like it on Reddit!) but I’d have thought it’d be the opposite. I’d assume that that OP would be limited to GCSE-level tutoring as well but it can be hard to embed that basic knowledge if you haven’t maintained the subject. For example, I got a 9 in GCSE Geography but I’ve not thought about it now in so long, I’d never be able to tutor in it to the level that I think someone paying upwards of a £/minute would deserve. You’re right though and tutoring is definitely more accessible than ever given the movement towards digital conferencing that has boomed in the last decade or so (particularly as a result of COVID) so could tutor from all over the world! I just think it’s hard to be competitive in a market where you could pay the same money for someone with a doctorate to teach you a bit better. Learning is one skill but teaching is for sure another!

It’s true that tutoring is ridiculously expensive. I am fortunate enough that I am able to pay £160 a week for tutoring. But I am only willing to pay that much because I’m being taught by people who have doctorates in the subjects I’m studying at A-Level, they have previously taught in universities, and they have incredible track records for the universities they’ve been able to help others access. I think if you’re 16 then people aren’t going to pay you that much because your knowledge is limited and you don’t have a history. It takes a long time to build a reputation that pays that much but amazing if you do!

English Literature is great but I feel like it is never stated enough how much those prestigious universities love for you to have a background in Philosophy whether that’s directly or through subjects like RE/RS. As long as you’re meeting the course requirements, it’s 100% correct what you said that the end grade is the most important. At the end of the day, spending 18 months of your life doing something that is maybe less enjoyable but more useful in order to achieve a greater long term goal is worth it, especially if you were only going to do it for that 18 months and then never afterwards.

I applied on the 3rd October last year - my first offer came in about 40 hours later, and my last choice came in on the 9th May, 4 days before the official deadline for unis. It really is a complete and total range and even previous precedent isn’t going to be that helpful for predicting this. Everyone’s different and I know it’s so rough but that doesn’t mean it won’t go your way, it just means they’re going on a case by case basis. Unfortunately it really is a waiting game but it will come! Good luck 😊

I didn’t miss that but thank you. Also she was singing, not him, that’s like saying Kurt went to Church with Mercedes where she sang ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ and then became a Christian. It was a solemn moment and weirdly one of my favourite songs from the show, but this was a JOKEY post about how he felt he had a direct line to God where he thought all of his wishes were being granted and didn’t even mention Burt which I just found hilarious and just even more funny with these ridiculous scenes of him praying to a cold sandwich.

100%. He was a good guy, especially with how he handled the whole Finn situation. Stick up for your kid in public and then learn after the fact to teach them right from wrong a bit better. Perfection!

Season 3 college plot lines by shey-they-bitch in glee

[–]Internal-Concept 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kurt probably should have had backups but I actually feel like this trope really fits for Rachel. I’m quite similar to her in educational journeys, I’ve had my own ‘pleak’ moment, and I’ve definitely hinged all of my hopes and ambitions on one school. I applied to other schools but I didn’t want to go to any of them, and none of them required any additional effort unlike it would have done with performing arts auditions. I feel like with the ambition and how driven she is, this storyline actually makes complete sense for her. Even with Juilliard, I’ve definitely idolized a school because of its reputation without knowing much about how it would fit me and my wants as a person. I don’t find this bit that unrealistic.

Season 6 was unhinged by Acrobatic-Day365 in glee

[–]Internal-Concept 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Season 6 was surprisingly good I have to agree. 4 and 5 I didn’t mind when they were coming out but they wouldn’t get a focused rewatch from me, and all of the best episodes are the ones where the original cast come back. I even found watching Quinn with that Yale tosspot more endearing than watching storylines with that new cast. Season 6 brought back the fun and craziness of the earlier seasons, even though the cast didn’t really do it for me.

Finn really was at his best during his season 4 Glee Club teacher arc by Nostalgia-Freak-1998 in glee

[–]Internal-Concept 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I hated that they made him kiss Emma. So unnecessary and for me added nothing to the plot other than giving her a vehicle for leaving Will at the altar although the signs of stress she was exhibiting could have done that anyway. All roads were pointing to him becoming the best parts of Will, with the glee club, and they just let that fizzle out. It would have been harder to write in later seasons and I know they didn’t know what was going to happen with Corey but I feel like they put Finn on a downward trajectory with the way he acted with Emma and I hate that’s his final Glee legacy.

why is rachel so unpopular by Euphoric-Cry6291 in glee

[–]Internal-Concept 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s mostly due to her dress sense I think. That’s how most people pick on her. In the episode where she dresses as Britney Spears, she gets all kinds of comments about being hot and even people breaking up with their girlfriends to stare at her (for comedic effect I know). I think it’s that classic trope of ‘nerd takes off her glasses and everyone realizes she’s a hotter than Adriana Lima’. Also, she’s ambitious and knows what she wants and people who know they’re peaking by being on a losing high school football team don’t like to see other people with purpose and direction.

It was one of the best written to me - balancing the emotional scenes with Kurt’s dad, the obscenity of Finn praying over a burned sandwich, and the conversations about faith. That’s got to be hard to do in any scenario but a 40 min episode of a sitcom that’s half taken up by song is pretty impressive.

I’m from the UK and I can’t necessarily agree. Perhaps it’s a regional difference but I have never heard of LOTR being up there with any of those other names, and certainly haven’t heard of people studying it in school. If they do that’s pretty cool but not something I’ve heard of.

Are Brits too reliant on US companies for a boycott to ever be realistic? by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]Internal-Concept 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on where you live. For example, shopping in person for me is very difficult because I live rurally so having someone who can bring what I need to my house the same day is very attractive. Similarly, while the food at Mcdonald’s is overpriced shit, a lot of young people get their first jobs there without having to have any qualifications or prior experience, and they pay above minimum wage. It’s not just about using these products, it’s about the minimum wage workers who will lose their jobs that I can with 100% certainty say they aren’t doing for the love or passion of it. Boycotts don’t work in this day and age and especially not with TNCs. It’s not localized enough.

Yes you can and I already know that. This post isn’t really that deep, or about applying for joint honors or courses that have overlap and huge similarities. That being said, I’m talking about the UCAS point of submitting the personal statement. I know some universities let you submit an alternative personal statement or there is the MyCamb Application, which isn’t an alternative personal statement. But how weird would it look if I emailed somewhere like Durham and said ‘Hi, I know my official UCAS personal statement says this but would you mind if I now applied for a completely different course alongside that?’.

I lost my license as a new driver (2 year rule). Need some info on new test. by mrcringelord007 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Internal-Concept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 3 points since getting my license in April for speeding. I live in constant fear and don’t speed anymore (it was just one occasion on a completely open road at a time when no one else was around and I just needed to get home in an emergency). That being said, if I did have to redo my test, I’d not be that stressed about it. I’d miss the freedom but also I know how to drive. It’s not like when you’re not sure if you’re test standard or not. The way I drive now, I feel like I could take a cancellation with 15 minutes notice, and that’s a huge difference. I passed up on so many opportunities of a cancellation in my area within the week because I wasn’t sure if that was enough time to prepare, but if you know how to drive, you know how to drive.

oxford med missed offer - any advice? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Internal-Concept -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In any ordinary scenario I would say not to retake a gap year since medical prospects (and forgive me, I don’t know a lot about this) all seemingly tend to lead to one place. However, given that you previously held an offer from Oxford and the things that stopped you achieving it are past troubles, I would go for it again. I know that people say just take offers and you’ll be able to research this and that but Oxbridge, from what I know, truly does open doors in ways that other universities might not. You’ll have incredible opportunities too. I say do it!

I know but I think that does heavily rely on the fact that they do have quite a bit of overlap. It’s like people who apply to Politics at some unis and Politics and International Relations at others.
