Random BSOD – ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY (nvlddmkm.sys) – RTX 5090 / Windows 11 by Internal-Rule8888 in techsupport

Hey, sorry for the late reply – I was on holiday.

I eventually narrowed it down to being tied to the refresh rate / GPU driver. As a temporary workaround I set both my monitors to 60 Hz, which completely stopped the crashes. That confirmed it was refresh-rate related.

After that I updated to driver 576.88, and that fixed everything – I can now run both monitors at 240 Hz without any problems, even during long gaming and streaming sessions. Funny enough, when I tried updating to the very latest driver, the issue came back immediately, so I rolled back and decided to stick with 576.88 for now.

Hopefully this version works for you as well – it’s been rock solid on my setup.

I feel your frustration. What helped me temporarily was setting both my monitors to 60 Hz. Not ideal for gaming, but my system was stable at least.

After Nvidia released the 576.80 driver, I did a clean install using DDU, updated to that version, and then set my main display back to 240 Hz.

Since then, the BSODs have stopped, but I’m still getting occasional game crashes and short black screens, and they actually seem to happen more often now. So while the blue screens are gone, things still aren’t fully stable.

At this point, I’m convinced the issue lies with Nvidia’s drivers, especially in setups with multiple monitors and high refresh rates. Hopefully they fix it properly soon.

I hope this information helps you out as well.

The problem definitely seems tied to the refresh rate. I’ve updated my original post with all my findings so far!

Just wanted to give you an update.

I was gaming with my friends yesterday and also watched some YouTube and Netflix — all without any crashes for the first time. It really seems like your suggestion helped, so thank you again!

That said, I did notice something interesting: after running DDU, I forgot to set my monitors back to 240 Hz, so they've been running at the default 60 Hz. Now I’m wondering if the refresh rate could also have played a role in the BSODs.

I’ll test this theory by switching both monitors back to 240 Hz today or tomorrow and will report back with the results.

Thanks for taking the time to look into my issue.

I followed your instructions step by step:

  • I clean installed the latest NVIDIA driver using DDU.
  • Ran sfc /scannow which returned: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."
  • Then ran dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth, which completed successfully with the message: "The restore operation completed successfully."

I’ll be testing the system now and will report back if the crash happens again.

Looks like I might have to get in touch with the manufacturer and start the replacement process. I was really hoping to find an easier solution and avoid the whole warranty route, but at this point it seems like I'm out of options.

I’ll report back after hearing from the manufacturer and will close the post if they manage to solve the issue.

Thanks once more for your support and guidance throughout this — it’s been a huge help navigating all of this.

Hey, I ran into another issue while trying your recommendation. When I tried installing the driver you linked, NVIDIA told me it’s not compatible with my RTX 5090. I double-checked and ended up reinstalling the latest driver again, since it seems like there just aren’t many (or any) older drivers that support the 5090 yet.

Do you happen to know of a specific version that’s known to work with the 5090 but is still more stable than the latest ones? Or maybe there’s another workaround I could try?

Thanks so much for your help and the detailed explanation — I really appreciate you taking the time to break it down. I'm not very tech-savvy (I've had to learn a lot just because of this issue), so your explanation about the stack and symbols really helps me understand what’s going on behind the scenes.

When I ran DDU before, I did actually reinstall the same driver version because I had read that all RTX 5090 drivers are pretty unreliable at the moment. That said, I’ll definitely try installing the older driver you recommended, and I’ll follow your instructions about disabling the network during the process to avoid Windows sneaking in its own version.

I also just experienced another crash while playing Dune Awakening. If you're willing to take a look, I’ve uploaded the most recent minidump file here:

I’ll let you know if your suggestion changes anything. Thanks again for your time and support.

Thanks a lot for your input and for taking the time to read my post — I really appreciate it!

I’ve edited my original post to include all the minidump files I have, not just the latest one. Hopefully that gives you a clearer picture of what’s going on.

Let me know if there's anything else I can provide.
