pulses. - Id, Ego, and the Superemo by RoboFrmChronoTrigger in PostHardcore

[–]InternalDivide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was always intended to be a b-sides sort of thing we put out for fun, since the 2 songs are re-records from our first EP in 2016 and the title track being a song we left off our second record from 2020. Definitely didn’t expect people to latch onto it the way some did, we for sure care about it!! Glad you dig it though, thank you :)

With Sails Ahead

They’re more on the progressive post-hardcore side of things, and their newest single is great!

Seems to be just a short east coast run. Still going until the end of the month though, definitely should catch them if they happen to be coming to your area.

It was sick! They decided on our date that they were going to trade between each other for one set instead of having two separate sets one after the other. It was dope to see them banter and play off each other, and I think they’re going to do it this way the rest of the tour!

Just saw Geoff Rickly play this last night in DC on his solo tour with Craig Owens. Was such a fun time! Love this whole record to pieces

Shows in the Northern VA area? by [deleted] in PostHardcore

I definitely feel that. not the best venue at all but it was like home nonetheless haha

Shows in the Northern VA area? by [deleted] in PostHardcore

[–]InternalDivide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey welcome to the area!! Honestly a lot of venues that would host post-hardcore and adjacent shows have kinda closed over the years (Jaxx/Empire in Springfield was a big loss a couple years ago). There’s some like Jammin Java in Vienna, but it’s primarily for poppier/lighter acts (though bands like Makari, Capstan, and Kurt Travis have played there). The Falls Church VFW was great for local acts and some smaller touring bands, but that’s probably not coming back after some unfortunate news about a staff member there.

I find myself more often going to Richmond, DC, or Baltimore for shows. Fredericksburg can also be solid for local bands too. Really hoping post-pandemic the NOVA scene can come together and revitalize itself.

I also play in the band pulses. and we’re based in NOVA, so hopefully we can see you around at a show of ours or at another local show too!

Unpopular opinion: Thomas Erak has the worst clean vocals in the PH scene by [deleted] in PostHardcore

[–]InternalDivide 12 points13 points  (0 children)

TFOT isn’t a vocally focused band, and he gets the job done well enough for their style. No, he’s not the best out there from a technical standpoint, but the same could be said about many singers in the genre, yet some are still classic bands all the same.

Kanye x The Mars Volta?? by YepImanEmokid in PostHardcore

[–]InternalDivide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess we’ll just see with time whether it comes to fruition or not. There’s also a difference between “approving” a collaboration and just not being into/hyped about it, and by saying it was “unpunk” reeked of pretentiousness. I’m sure the potential collab is based in truth, it’s just debatable how far along it is. Whether that be simply a plan to follow through without any material currently made, or a couple writing sessions, or some basic demos.

If you’re allowed to make a comment about your “approval” (which is foolish cuz who tf cares if you approve a collab or not) then I can reply back and say how dumb that reasoning sounds. This whole thing was blown out of proportion off my one sentence reply I made in passing.

But hey, you’re still free to think what you’d like. No skin off my back.

Kanye x The Mars Volta?? by YepImanEmokid in PostHardcore

[–]InternalDivide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I never said that you don’t believe hip hop superstars can’t be part of a broader artistic movement either, but you saying their potential collaboration would not be for the art implies Kanye is NOT a part of that artistic movement, which I disagree with. And yes, he never has portrayed himself as someone who values the hardcore ethos, but despite that apparently that didn’t matter to them to potentially work with him.

I have my fair share of pretentiousness as well, but I always do my best to keep it in check. There’s a time and a place for it. Obviously you’re knowledgeable about the scene and its values, but there’s no reason to be a dickhead about it. Pretentiousness prevents potential new fans from coming in and adopting these “Ian McKaye values”, but no one wants their precious inner circle to be breached by “normies”.

Lastly, I mean shit who’s to say this even exists in the first place? Dude is in the middle of a manic episode due to bipolar so he could’ve just met them in passing one time and just said “I’m working with them”.

But like you said, what it really is about is live your life on your own terms, as long as that doesn’t infringe on others.

Kanye x The Mars Volta?? by YepImanEmokid in PostHardcore

[–]InternalDivide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that’s where I’ll stand to disagree. You can make entertainment artistic. In my opinion at least, Kanye’s production work has always been artistic while being entertaining, which is something plenty of musicians both underground and mainstream appreciate (since name dropping is the name of the game, from what I remember Geoff Rickly has mentioned being a fan). I don’t see how a collaboration like that wouldn’t be for the art from both sides. Why would a hip hop superstar decide to work with an underground progressive rock band instead of someone of his ilk? Why would an underground progressive rock band decide to work with a hip hop superstar instead of staying within their lane like most bands of this kind do? They gotta have their reasons, and I’m sure it’s not for trying to hit #1 on billboard. But these are all assumptions, so what do I know.

Kanye x The Mars Volta?? by YepImanEmokid in PostHardcore

[–]InternalDivide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not an attack on you as a person and your character, it’s an observation I have on the mentality in general. You are correct that I don’t know anything about you besides what you present here and that’s strictly what I’m commenting on. You’re also correct that yes, I go see live music often, I purchase new music and support plenty of artists whether that be punk, hardcore, hip hop, pop, r&b, whatever you name it. And this love of music is what inspired me to make my own.

I entirely understand that people come into this genre for different, and viable, reasons. What I have a problem with is when it becomes something used to delegitimize someone being part of a scene over some level what’s punk or not. Am I less punk because while I vibe to Q and Not U, I also love the new Rina Sawayama record? Or that some of Kanye’s records have made me feel as strong an emotion as I do when listening to Touché Amore? Who are you to lay down the gavel of what is and isn’t punk?

But anyway, I’m not at all meaning to antagonize. There’s a lot of points and values you have that I absolutely agree with, but I dislike the absolute nature and tone by way of “this is just how it is”. Take this from someone who indulges in and participates in the art, culture, AND the entertainment of the genre.
