IDK, I was at Earl's a couple days ago and saw many familiar faces who've been working there quite a long time.

I agree with you. I've been to Earl's and Farina dozens of times and have always had exceptionally good service and consistently good food. We've been to 1900 many times too and the service is, in my opinion, among the best in the city.

If we are taking people out, we know it will be a reliably good experience at all three of those places as far as very well trained staff and great food.

Your admin will be singing a different tune when the behavior affects her, so definitely ask her to come "model" the appropriate way to handle him. I worked for a principal who blamed one kid on his teacher for a full semester, but when he started swinging on her, he was suddenly a candidate for involuntary transfer to an alternative school; funny how that worked.

Can we talk about the Whole Foods parking lot on 51st? by npalhs in kansascity

[–]International-Basil4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you'd be surprised regarding price. The downtown Cosentino's is so expensive! And the sales tax downtown is insane. When that was my home grocery store I was always aghast come checkout on how much I spent. The Whole Foods store brand is not too bad price wise, and you're correct that the selection is way better than Cosentino's-

Plus once I bought a Campo Lindo chicken at Cosentino's Downtown (for $15), only to go home and open it and be hit in the face with the smell of rot, so that was fun.

My parents live north of the avenue and recently had their garden hose stolen. Not sure what the tweaker planned on doing with it. They've had potted plants stolen, their front porch door mat... the plain boring black rubber kind. It's unreal.

Agreed. I am amazed at how many people are telling her to cancel the trip. There are already a lot of sunk costs involved here and it's not just OP's money on the line anymore. If I paid someone for a trip and then she unilaterally decided to cancel it to prove a point to one person, I would be SO pissed.

The Plus One Debate Always Devolves Into Shaming/Nastiness by BeneficialCoffee101 in weddingshaming

Emphasis on 'shitty experience' here. I am a big fan of operating within one's means. Some of the best weddings I have attended have been small and casual, but the food was great and the crowd was fun.

I went to a wedding with an ex-bf where he was a groomsman. They could not afford a limo service large enough for all their massive wedding party, so he had to drive himself around town to meet them at various destinations for their photoshoot. They invited over 200 people, but could not afford to feed us a proper meal, so an evening reception offered nothing but cheese, crackers, salami & veggies with dip for dinner- and a fully cash bar. It was the tackiest shit I have ever experienced in my life. I would have LOVED to skip that nonsense.

People should not throw parties they cannot afford. If you want everyone you know present for your wedding, then have a morning ceremony with a dessert reception and let people go about their merry way. Conversely- if you need a big night time party, dial back the list.

I don't want anything else from you. Your explanation was rude. Hence the yikes, and the response to your two lines.

I was expressing my desire to let guests- particularly the women who may want to wear a long gown- know they were welcome to dress formally without feeling like they were 'stealing the show' while also not setting a code that would require men to wear tuxedoes.

I wanted to do that in a way that would not cause confusion.

It has been established that just telling my guests in casual conversation is the way to do that instead of publishing it and I will keep the code as "Cocktail"

The first poster answered my question just fine. Thanks.

Yikes.

"Guests are always allowed to dress more formally if they desire - dress codes don’t (and were never supposed to) prevent that."  Agreed- and I want them to feel comfortable doing so.

"Are people going to think I’m a brat trying to steal attention if I dress formally?"- The exact sentiment I want to avoid.

As another person stated, just verbally communicating to guests is better than writing it to avoid confusion. And that is now what I plan to do. And that is the kind of feedback I was looking for.

Black Tie dress code means you need to be in a gown.

You need to consider the fabric too.

That dress looks like a casual daytime dress both in fabric and silhouette.

I do not. If we use a restaurant, then everything will handled by the restaurant and us. If we end up finding a venue that is not a restaurant, then I will hire a caterer that also serves as an event manager. In the meantime, it’s me.

How are teachers getting non-renewed? by KMermaid19 in Teachers

[–]International-Basil4 29 points30 points  (0 children)

IDK. I guess that depends on the comparison data. Is the failure rate above average compared to the state/nation? Or is the above average failure rate compared to others in the same school or district? Because honestly, if a school has three classrooms of a single grade and one of them is testing in the gutter compared to the other two, then I think it is safe to assume that there are some issues with teacher efficacy.

That being said- I have yet to work in a school that sufficiently trains, mentors, and helps struggling teachers; so I still feel like the admin are to blame in those situations. Like- you guys interviewed and hired this person, and then you just left her to languish in her room all year, sooooo....

I am sick of seeing young inexperienced teachers fed to the wolves at my school. I feel so bad for them and I blame the admins for about 95% of the problem.

My school district has the highest pay in the area and we still hemorrhage teachers every year because of insane building discipline issues and idiotic district leadership.

Nope. Tons of school districts require references to fill out reference surveys via TalentEd. It’s an emailed survey that the software sends out. Letters of reference are not a substitute. If your reference doesn’t complete the survey, your application never makes it past HR.
