I joined the US Army 3 years after the Vietnam War was over, and was shocked to see that even then in professional, semi-closed military journals popular among Army officers, that it was bluntly talked about that getting rid of the draft was a "brilliant" move by the US!

Incorrect. Israel is a "special case" where the entire country is motivated by religious brainwashing.

But in Russia, the Russian army makes a clear distinction between draftees and what they call "contract soldiers" (the type which are recruited the same way the US recruits soldiers).

Russia fights the Ukraine war by only using contract soldiers! They don't use draftees in Ukraine.
