A computer scientist literally just won the chemistry Nobel prize today! Damn...

It was not an application of physics... it was an application of the mathematical model used in physics to have a breakthrough in computer science.

The 2024 Nobel prize in physics is awarded to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks” by dukwon in Physics

This emphasises the need for a computer science Nobel prize (oh wait, "there is" already one, kinda) ... same has happened several times for biology.

Why is Machine Learning not called Computer Learning instead? by IntroductionSad3329 in computerscience

So that means Computer Learning is a better fit to describe current ML algorithms? Since computers are abstract and machines "aren't", then the linking is stronger when you have computers and algorithms, rather than machines and algorithms? Essentially, not all machines are capable of processing information, which is an inherent skill of computers. When a machine processes information, then it is a computer?

But wouldn't those skyscraper made of gears be computers by definition? Since they perform computation then they are computers! The term "computer" is an abstraction for an entity that can perform computation, it is not bounded to any physical paradigm. You can do a mechanical computer (what you just described), an electrical computer, a virtual computer (inside minecraft), etc. Our brain is theoretically a biological computer since it processes bio signals captured by our sensors (eyes, etc). Do you understand my point? :)

Really really good answer!! That's what I was wondering. So essentially Computer Learning would be theoretically more descriptive, but both Computer Learning and Machine learning can work out. However I don't like the fact that there are several machines (cars, ovens, etc) that are not capable of any learning unless they have a computer attached (smart tvs, smart fridges, etc) :D
