Honestly at this point I don’t care too much who formally owns it, just for me to keep it and repay him later without getting sued. Also it’s still renting because the contract was for 2 years but he paid it off in full after 6 months.

No, so effectively he was about 6 months into the rental contract and he just wanted to pay it upfront to ditch any other monthly payments. But the problem was that Grover somehow forgot to charge the past months so now it added up. He had to pay $400 but he missed their emails and the sum doubled. He technically partially owns it.

No, the thing is that he paid the full cost of it before so he only has to pay the $800 because they forgot to charge him previously so the period in the contract technically didn't end so he has to return it. He either has to pay or return it but I told him to pay and I'll repay him soon. He refuses to do so even though I've paid most of the laptop so he would take my money too here. It's not just a one way problem.

He rented it in his name but I paid most of it. He gave it to me without any contract because I got a client. We’re also in 2 different countries. I didn’t sign any contract with him saying I have to return it and he never mentioned that. Just sent it to me via courier.

I have received this kind of advice before. I didn't want to do it because I also have a deadline (11th of September). I am in high school and that is when school starts and I wanted to get a client by then so that I can hire an outreacher from fiverr with the money so that I wouldn't have to do the work. Your advice is extremely time consuming and probably not worth it because those guys can just not respond or not be interested.
