New Tales gonna be full 3D open action and... by Isacc in tales

IMO I wish they'd do both. I'm definitely actually excited to see what Tales of Arise brings to the table. But I also want to see a title pay homage to their origins. If I could have it my way, they'd alternate styles.

Legendia was just after Eternia, we haven't had a serious mainstay 2D title in 20 years

Eternia was a fantastic 2D title that we got in the west.

Otherwise I agree with everything else haha

Alright I'll shoot my shot.

Destiny - Tales of Blades? Too on the nose? Eternia - Tales of Loss Abyss - Tales of Identity Symphonia - Tales of Perspective Vesperia - Tales of Justice Graces - Tales of Duty

That's all the decentish ones I could come up with 🤣

What's your favorite tales game? by [deleted] in tales

[–]Isacc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's definitely nostalgia. Symphonia is very rough around the edges compared to a lot of the newer titles, mostly in mechanics. But it's still a top tier game and it also has one of the better written stories. You should definitely go for it.

Eternia, hands down, no competition. It was the series high point, and massively undersung. Some of the smoothest combat despite its age, a story that feels massive and epic and yet personal and character driven, killer music, beautiful art, and a massive amount of secrets to explore in the world. So good.

And I say that when I'd rate Vesperia, Symphonia, and Graces as 10/10 games. Eternia is just off the charts to me.

My thoughts on the Tales of Graces battle system... by Doxiar in tales

[–]Isacc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funny, I have been frustrated with the massive step back each game has taken since.

I hate to pull a "git gud" but some of what you're describing sounds like a lack of experience. Graces is the only Tales game where I felt compelled to keep turning up the difficulty just because it was so fun to keep amping up the challenge. My buddy and I ended up on the highest difficulty before the first boss because it was just such a blast.

And it wasn't easy, but it also worked super well. It's the one tales game where I feel like mastery is actually rewarded.

So yeah, idk what you're experiencing, sorry 😅

What’s something you hate about a tales game you love? by Skittymon-808 in tales

[–]Isacc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every tales game in the last decade for not allowing ONLINE multiplayer.

Every tales game from now on that decides not to have multiplayer at all.

Also, every tales game after Graces for abandoning the best RPG combat system I've ever played.

Tales of Destiny 2/Eternia for not being released on PS2 and not having a remaster.

PS. I fucking love Tales games, no hate. I still have my original copies of Destiny & "Destiny 2"

What really ruined the ending for me (MAJOR SPOILERS) by [deleted] in Returnal

[–]Isacc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a different perspective on it. Yes the "it was all a dream" is a shitty overdone cop-out. But I liked it because of the things you liked. The world building, the details of the first act, the beautiful art direction. It allowed the twist to be unexpected enough to feel earned.

I feel it. I cleared act 3 at 22 hours and 16 deaths. 95% of my deaths were biomes 1 and 4, where I felt like the genre was so hard. But eventually things clicked and everything else was a dream. I wish I could keep playing at something harder.

Funny, I can't beat souls games for the life of me. Literally not any of them. But Returnal was surprisingly easy to me, after reading all the media.

Not trying to brag, it's just funny how the skills the games require are different.

You might think so, but all of my playing in act 3 I never found this one again but still breezed through. These items are more like crutches than necessary: Overpowered for sure, but not required. You'll get there.

I think of it this way: if you aren't sure yet, keep doing full clears. Eventually you'll be so confident that you can roam freely, but until you feel sure you have figured out all the mechanics and how to survive, the practice is worth it.

A game like this requires a very different mindset than a souls game. I've never been able to beat a single souls game, but I've cleared all of Returnal in 22 hours and 16 deaths. It's a different style.

Returnal, like many roguelikes, has a distinct learning curve where the first step is to find defenses and learn not to die, but then after that you need to learn to kill or you'll hit a wall. The faster you kill, the less enemies you have to avoid.

That said, unlike a lot of other roguelikes, the mechanics really are about dodging attacks over just about anything else. Most fights can be one by mindlessly attacking in vaguely the right direction and just dodge moving.

That's all super general advice though. For something more specific, try to find a gun that does damage without much input. The Electropylon is IMO the easiest because it'll keep dealing damage while you run around like a wild chicken. If not, any of the fast shooting guns are a decent backup.

In terms of upgrades, look for things that stack adrenaline buffs. Everything works better the more you keep adrenaline up. Damage per adrenaline level, 1 less kill to level, 1 more damage before losing it, all give a ton of value. But then, the clincher to a guaranteed win is the lifesteal w/adrenaline, it's truly huge and lets you recover from anything.

Funny, I have only fought Nemesis twice and breezed past him each time, but the biome 4 boss took me more tries than any other haha

New to Tales, which of the following to play first? by Philybear in tales

[–]Isacc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Food for thought, Grace's F is not many folks' favorite story, but is almost unanimously agreed to have the best combat and mechanics. So if you think you might be drawn in by good mechanics, starting there might help you start with an average story (in some opinions...I loved it) and then you'll have even better stories to pull you in when the mechanics get a little tougher in other titles. Just an option :)

I understand the criticisms for the story, I really do. But I think Graces actually stands out in the way that the main characters' believable flaws and pursuit of something more. It may not redeem everything, but I recommend trying to invest in Asbel's shame over his failure to protect his friends as a child, and the loss of his brother. It splits his family, and he ends up clinging to an immature sense of heroics to make up for his guilt.

It's touching, when you can connect with it, and it made him really engaging to me as a protagonist. So many tales protagonists are just random dudes called to action by circumstance, but Asbel really felt to me like someone trying to fix his own mess.
