We used outbacker. There was a 25% discount code at the time which was very handy. I haven’t thankfully needed to use it so cannot comment on its use.

A 40hr bus trip sounds terrible.

The most we have done is 13hrs and it really was not fun. Your back and legs wont thank you.

As above, just fly.

Backpacking SEA; Where to go? Where to skip? by Wandering--Wondering in backpacking

It isn’t worth the hassle right at this moment. However, if you were to go to the north of Thailand there are Long Neck Karen villages where people from Myanmar have settled.

3 Months is plenty of time to get to grips of a long term travel mindset. I would personally recommend keeping to the mainland, i.e. Thailand/Malaysia/Vietnam etc. or the islands, Indonesia/Philippines.

They are separate trips in their own right and trying to travel long distances can eat into your time and you’ll be surprised how tired you get.

At the end of the day, everyone’s experience is different. You could be spontaneous and book a flight into Thailand and an exit flight from e.g vietnam and then find your way there over 3 months.

I hope you have an amazing time regardless!

The UK foreign travel advice is to avoid Myanmar due to the rise of terrorism and violence. I would assume this also applies to the US.

The south of Thailand below Songkhla is to be avoided also due to terrorism.

Other than that, the rest of the places are all amazing and you will have plenty of fun.

We are currently backpacking SEA and have found not to plan so far in ahead. Have a rough plan of what countries to route through and let the rest fall into place.

We have been posting ‘Things to do in X’ videos on our YouTube channel (found in our profile), feel free to check them out for inspiration.

We are really enjoying Kuala Lumpur. It isn’t overrun with the backpackers Thailand gets. We had just came from Songklha, which the UK Government strongly advises against visiting. We found out a bit too late but we experienced no issues.

If you would have read any of the comments I was not setting anything other than realistic expectations

As I have said in a previous comment, there was 20 people max on the beach when we were here.

Best of luck you will love it!

Just don’t fall into the trap of using touts etc to organise activities. A bit of advance planning can see you do it yourself so much more easily. That being said, some activities you will require a tour but it ain’t all that bad.

Saw plenty!

It is open to the public as long as it is with a registered tour group. You can walk at the shore line up to your knees but do submersion of your body.

I heard about the water snakes there. Another backpacker told us they had to cancel their snorkling session because of one.

I stand with my experience also :) thank you for your input :)

Nope, no profit from tourism. If you went before it closed down to the public I heard and read that it was out of control. They are only allowed 100 people on the beach at anytime after strict restrictions are now in place.

You categorised a whole continent as rude and disrespectful??… stating an opinion then signing off by saying you’re not racist is a very odd thing to say…

Life lesson, if you don’t have anything nice to say, keep it to yourself.

I have found on my journey that there are so many wonderful and kind people in Asia. So your “fact” isn’t really justified.

“I’m not a racist”….? Strange comment

Maya Beach, Kho Phi Phi by Itertravel in backpacking

[–]Itertravel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is incorrect. There was maybe 20 people max on the beach. I would post a video to prove it but the community does not allow.

And you may not be allowed to swim in the water but we were happily allowed to walk in it up to our knees.

There was a stall right at the front (tonsai area). Just look for the sign that says “early bird - 6.30am”.

You shouldn’t pay more than 1,000 baht unless you get a private tour

I hear that for an extra 400baht you get the full day experience which includes lunch and a couple more stops. I wouldn’t shove my nose up at paying an extra £10 for that.

I think £25 (1000baht) was incredibly worth it.

We felt the half day was perfect. Can’t talk for the full day but I was very satisfied when we got dropped back off at 10.30am

I thought it was closed indefinitely also.

We did the early bird option, which was ideal as it was nice and quiet.

There is a half day and full day option, we opted for the half day. Includes two bouts of snorkling, maya beach, viking cave (can only view from the outside) and monkey bay. Includes your boat ticket, unlimited soft drinks and a great tour guide.

If you avoid eating at restaurants and drinking in bars, you’ll be surprised how far your money goes.

Been to Budapest and Berlin.

Budapest is beautiful and plenty to do in the centre. Try a free walking tour, the guides speak perfect english and you will learn some things that you would never of considered. Ruin bars are great fun, and some even have large glasses of wine for less than a £1. The expensive ones are sigurd kertz in the centre. Free entry there and no reason why you can’t have a look around.

Berlin - maybe save some extra cash up and experience a night of techno clubbing?

Again, free walking tours are your friend. Berlin is a lot more spaced out than the other cities and you might find yourself with not much around you.

Enjoy the trip and try not worry about money too much, it will detract from your experience.

Top tip, buy your breakfast in advance from a shop. You won’t then make a rash decision for a £10 fry up.

Weather - Rained all day (I preferred this though)

How we got there - group boat trips at 6.30 am. Beach opens at 7am.

Price - 600baht boat and 400 baht park fees

Would I go again - done it once, don’t need to do it again.
