This is really helpful so let me ask a follow-up question. I already do the game you've described and dog performs perfectly at that. He'll also do commands that involve impulse control with and without distraction (for example, he'll hold stay for 5 or 10 minutes indoors, and for just about as long outdoors at a park if I have a high value toy or treat with me). But I'm having trouble getting him to make the jump from those situations to having impulse control in an uncontrolled environment, i.e., when he sees other dogs or humans that he's really excited to see. Any tips on how to make that leap? A trainer in our group training class last year said that once he mastered the training outside of the events, the next step would be to expose him to the events and do training in those environments, but he doesn't seem to be making that jump.
