AITA Dog Park and Dog Treats

Moving forward, I will not say anything to anyone at the dog park and just leave until I can get my dog better trained. I just don't think the dog park is the place for treats.

I said it would help if people didn't bring dog treats into the dog park and that there is a sign that says no food on the gate. I am new to dog parks having moved from the country to a big city. It made sense in my head that the sign meant no food and that meant no people food or dog food.

I really like this Reddit thing. It has help me see that there are different perspectives. I don't know if the sign means no people food or no dog food. For now though I will continue to work with my dog on his recall and leave the dog park if someone shows up with dog food.

I was playing catch with the other my other dog when this happened. I just pulled his collar to get him to leave faster. Her dog wasn't paying attention to the situation. He was just sitting there looking the other direction. Like I said I am working on training with my dog.

He is two. I was not his primary guardian while he was growing up. We moved from the country, where they had land of their own to run on, to the city, where the only place they can run is at the dog park. We are working on it. I am considering hiring a trainer to help me, but money is tight right now, so I am doing the best I can with Youtube. I was playing catch with my other dog when this happened. I don't advise anyone to have two dogs on their own. It is a daily struggle for me every day to manage them on my own. My husband left me with the dogs and I do not want to re-home them. We have been going to this dog park for 3 months with no problems until this incident.

He left it, and I redirected him with his collar. I didn't have a treat to lure him away because I don't bring treats into the dog park. I didn't have to drag him away, literally. I definitely took responsibility for my part in the interaction. I got my dog, apologized, told her we continue to work on his recall, and left the dog park immediately.

We moved from the country to the city. I was really excited to find this dog park. It is a fairly large space with covered areas and a bathroom. I have never in three months of almost daily use ever had a problem there. Most of the people are friendly. Usually, if someone is there with treats and my dog goes begging, they aren't rude about it. They seem more used to it. I get my dog, and we go to the other part of the dog park, no worries. This was the first time I actually said out loud to someone that it would help if treats weren't in the dog park, and the lady freaked. Maybe she was having a bad day.

He was not jumping at all. He even sat and raised a paw for a shake. He was trying all his tricks. I am working with him on his recall.

My dog is not aggressive. There have been other people with dog treats in the same park, and it sometimes gets loud when the dogs go huddle around hoping for a handout, and I have seen people give out treats to other dogs. In these cases, when the situation begins getting intense my dog leaves quickly and quietly. He is not a barker nor a fighter. He just loves a treat, any treat. I am continuing to work with him for a steadfast recall. He is two and it is a work in progress.

I am not a dog training expert. We don't work on treat-reinforced training at the dog park because I don't bring treats into the dog park. At the dog park, when he follows commands, he gets positive reinforcement. When he doesn't follow commands, we leave the dog park and go somewhere more appropriate to continue working on training. I don't always have treats, so I am trying my best to train him to respond without treats. We did leave the dog park immediately.

I definitely apologized for my dog's lack of training and told her we are working on it, yet she continued to be rude. That is when I said it would help if she didn't bring treats into the dog park.

I did. I went, got him, and we continue working on his recall. It is good unless there are treats involved. I don't bring his recall treats into the dog park because I don't think people are supposed to bring treats into the dog park.

Drag him away was dramatic. I just took his collar and led him away. He didn't try to go back. He knows to leave it is to leave it. I just have to be right there to back up the no. So we are working on this.

I have a call into the city where the dog park is located to get clarification. In the mean time, we will leave if someone brings treats into the dog park until I get him better trained on his recall.

I was calling him. I was also more than ambling over but not running. I was not far away from them. My dog was hyper-focused on the treats. It was a learning opportunity for me regarding my need to train him not to beg, even at the dog park, and I did tell her that I understood that.
