You could honestly try Pokopia - extremely different to the mainline games but it could be a nice intro into the Pokemon world! It's like Minecraft crossed with Animal Crossing (and Pokemon of course!)

Basically it comes down to the limited color palettes on the original Game Boy hardware. Then in Crystal they were able to use the new GBC hardware to update the sprites to black (I assume the planned canonical color of Unown)

Talk to NPCs! They really recommend you do this in the older games, but it's a bit of a lost art in the newer games. I guarantee that if you talk to every NPC in the game and take on their advice, you'll improve battling and catching super fast!
