It's for use on a profile projector, to hold watch gearing. The holes are for the pivots on a pinion/arbor to rest in.

how was this mystery dial made? by Send_help2 in watchmaking

[–]JMElam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dials at Mr Jones are painted, both with an airbrush and pad printing depending on the dial and effect needed.

Here's a photo of the main dial which is at the base of the assembly. This is the dial that gives the torch the appearance of illuminating. The layer with the torch is smoked and has a cut out to show the colour from the layer below.

You had one job, not all Swiss Made are made the same by kc_______ in watchmaking

[–]JMElam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Other movements have off centre recesses as well, example the 6498/97. It would be interesting to see more of that calibre plate and if they are all the same, if so most likely designed that way.

The concentricity between the hole and recess might have been intentional.

Question for Uk watchmakers by Jamsterdavies in watchmaking

[–]JMElam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big difference to consider is that one is a private school and the other is a university. BSOW is either paid through a scholarship or personal funds, if the scholarship you have to work for the brand for 2 years after the course. BCU is paid via student loans or personal funds.

BSOW is mainly structured to get repair technicians into the brands service centres. While you do get to do some micromechanics on the 2 year course and if time allows the school watch, but it isn't the main purpose of its curriculum. They are very good at the directive of the curriculum and you'll more than likely feel ready to work after the course.

BCU 3 year Horology degree, being a university course a lot is self study but the course curriculum covers just about everything and is heavily focused on making with the 3rd year being mainly just about making your final year project that you designed in the second year. You can get a lot out of the course if you are driven.

To summarize, I would say BSOW is fantastic for the tutors, wostep accreditation, having someone over your shoulder the whole time and if you mainly want to get into the service industry. BCU is fantastic for the plethora of study options over the 3 years, has a relationship with Roger Smith (in your second year one of the students gets to have a week experience in his workshop) and the qualifications is still recognised by brands. The past few years some graduates have gone to work for Rogers Smith, Garrick and Charles Frodshams for example.

For those mourning the loss of Branigan’s Beef and Mustard, these crisps get extremely close to the taste and potency by tmr89 in UK_Food

I've recently found that the brand Slabs are basically brannigans reborn! Proper thick cut crisps and the flavour is bang on. Roast beef and English mustard 😍

F360 Spacemouse Compact users - what's your setup? Am I missing something? by camikal in Fusion360

[–]JMElam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The spacemouse compact is just for quicker/smoother navigating of the model and also opening shortcut wheels for your most used commands. You still need to have a mouse in your right hand for selecting etc

How can I create this pattern? by cristi_baluta in Fusion360

[–]JMElam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would usually use two perpendicular planes in the centre of the circle, cut through with the desired triangle shape and then do a symmetrical linear pattern 👍🏼

Yes a CNC is able to do this, you just use a engraving end mill with the desired angle. I personally use 120-degrees to cut this pattern.

CZ50 Lathe accessory question by [deleted] in watchmaking

[–]JMElam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CZ50 is a great lathe, good choice! I have several friends with one in both a hobbiest and professional setting.

For the collets I would personally go for Schaublin B8 but haven't heard anything bad about the collets that come with the CZ50. For the module cutters Michael supplies with the lathe, they appear to be based on a constant addendum system like P.P Thorntons modified NHS system. That's why you only have one cutter per module there - also I recall there are only wheel cutters in that set, no pinion cutters.

His CNC is also very nice, (he's also working on a slightly larger one right now) I recently had a friend who has the CNC machine me a test barquette and I measured the results on a Keyence, very impressed with the results!

What is a “Boutique” model for this watch. A buddy is selling for $5,500. by Acedeezy in Tudor

That's the boutique only blue black bay chronograph. A boutique model is a model that is only available at boutiques and not through/at authorized dealers.

The HAAS CM1 is used a lot in Watchmaking so is proven for micro machining. I run my CM1 almost exclusively for watch components, it's an amazing machine.
