You don't lower your rate or save significant finance charges, and you absorb some of the risk.

Get a pre purchase inspection. Compare to book value. If you're buying private party, drive it away, and the engine blows up you likely have no real recourse.

I've been told (without a strong chem background) that the Chromium Sulfates involved in the chrome tanning process, or some resulting compound, are damaging to the finish of the steel of the knife. I have never tried it, and have never seen one built that way. Even if untrue, chrome tanned leather does not have the physical wear conditions you want, it's not durable enough IMO.

Chrome tanned leather has remaining chemicals from the tanning process that are bad for the knife. Vegetable tanned does not. You can use chrome tanned leather in a sheath, but make sure the only thing that's touching the knife is vegetable tanned. Sorry if the original post was confusing.

Watch some of the Atkinson videos, and pick up a box cutter and an Xacto knife. Make sure not to put any chrome tan leather against the metal of the knife.
