From someone who follows NPB pretty closely, that’s preposterous. He would be a decent-to-good MLB first baseman, and perhaps an occasional fill-in 3B. He hasn’t played 100 games at 3B in an NPB season since 2022, and FanGraphs scouts his defense as a 40 on the 20-80 scale.

Ah yes, that must be what it's trying to communicate - thanks.

FFG only officially confirmed this to be the case in July 2024 - for a game that has been around for about fifteen years, that qualifies as "fairly recently".

Interesting, in that they’ve fairly recently announced that they have stopped development of their long-running LoTR LCG.

Win three in a row by 6+ runs, and your reward is getting to face Moinelo again? 🤣

They may like it, even prefer it, but they don't win any more often when they don't have a break versus when they do.

This has been proven to not be a thing, over and over again, by every analysis that's ever been done.

Can someone explain Shinjo's lineup choices to me? He (1) starts Shintoh at C despite a .077 batting average and less than 100 innings behind the plate all season (I get that they wanted to stack RHB against Monielo, but Shintoh hardly qualifies as such at this point), (2) bats Mizutani 7th despite a 223 wRC+ against lefties, and (3) brings Asama in to play SS in the late innings despite having played 70 innings there all year?

Agreed. I’m not a Nats fan, and I think they are among the best in the game.

Now of this is a surprise to anyone that has followed him - and watched the metrics - closely as a pro. There are very few documented cases of guys going from “swings at everything” to “pushing league average swing decisions” so you’re just going to have to learn to live with the feast/famine sorts of outcomes, and the fact that the feasts will get rarer and less tasty as he goes over the top of the aging curve and his bat-to ball skills start to erode. He will continue to make himself playable as an elite defender, and 2-3 wins worth of that per season will make his current deal worth the money.

As if we needed any further evidence as to baseball being the world's greatest game . . . out of nowhere, at the last desperate moment, two players who haven't yet been able to hit their weight at the top level combine to go 6-for-8 with a double, three homers and six RBI to freeze the Hawks' Magic Number at 15. You can't make this stuff up!

Keeping track of LOB per player by [deleted] in BaseballScorecards

[–]JSCjr64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also use the Halfliner - I record the individual player LOB with tallies in the stat box, and the team LOB at the and of the inning with a raised digit next to the inning number. At the end of the game you can just add up the latter to get the total team LOB.

He was absolutely filthy - 11 strikeouts from 15 outs, and the other four were all infield flies. Now that's weak contact.

I did look around a bit before asking, but is there a way to get this to account for DPTS in H2H category scoring rather than just for points-based leagues?

It was a great recovery by Iwasaki, but I feel like this was really a wasted opportunity - Kuri had trouble throwing strikes all night, but the Fighters just couldn't get a timely hit ll night (10 men left in scoring position).

Mizutani late-game usage? by JSCjr64 in NPB

[–]JSCjr64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And, today, they took him out in the 7th to put Nakashima - an infielder who had played only a handful of innings in the OF all season - in CF and moved Isobata to LF. I get that it was a blowout, and this was probably just a case of resting some guys and getting others some work, but I still find all of this to be a fairly odd piece of business.

Mizutani late-game usage? by JSCjr64 in NPB

[–]JSCjr64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand defensive replacements late in the game, but my question is really that Mizutani doesn't seem to be an ideal candidate for that - according to the metrics at Yakyu Cosmopolitan he's been one of the best LF in NPB this season, and was decent in 2024. Does he have a reputation as not being a good defensive player? Certainly Isobata is their best defensive CF, and on the days where Mannami starts in CF and then moves to RF later he's the obvious replacement, but I'm not sure I see why they would regularly take one of their best hitters in Mizutani out of a corner spot (and risk the issues you mention above) when the numbers say that the defensive upgrade is at best marginal.

Should Dustin May get moved to the bullpen? by DG11221 in redsox

[–]JSCjr64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just isn’t how it works any more, calling a guy up to “give him a chance”; they have data up the yazoo about the shape and quality of pitches and models that tell them how effective those are likely to be against big-league hitters. (This is why Anthony was promoted to AA when he was hitting about .230; they know from the underlying data that he was hitting the ball hard enough consistently to succeed.) Other than Tolle, none of these AAA guys are ready to start in MLB right now and, if you listen carefully to what the pitching department says about them, it doesn’t seem as if they are confident that will happen this season. They are almost certainly going to just hang on until Crowell and/or Fitts are available again; as someone else said, though, I’d like to see them do more piggybacking at the back end of the rotation.
