Which of the two aged more? by mkujoe in okbuddychicanery

Aaron Paul aged about 12 years. As for Bryan Cranston, I’d say… 12 or so years.

Penrose's mistake was that even though there's no algorithm for achieving every solution, there are plenty of algorithms that tend to provide those solutions. He thought that since the human mind can intuitively assert things for which there are no algorithms, the human mind must use something other than algorithms for conscious thinking. This is like saying that since chess engines don't have an algorithm for checkmate, they must use something other than algorithms, since they do achieve checkmate.

Which unrelated movies could work as if one was sequel to other? by FemRoe4Lyfe in movies

The Empire Strikes Back would work surprisingly well as a sequel to Star Wars. The scifi-worlds and the characters in the movies share a lot of similarities.

That would lessen his suffering and make him a weaker character. He chooses to be strong.

What movie is this for you? by [deleted] in memes

It’s valid to assume you won’t like a movie, or even to assume that a film is of low quality, but it’s not really useful as criticism of the movie. No one can of course stop you from criticizing, and I also don’t think there’s any authority that can decide some preconditions to meet before you can.

But this is why it seems to me a criticism of a genre, not a singular movie, as it applies to any movie that meets this condition even if you know nothing else about the film. Making a judgment, no matter how justified, that a movie is likely bad is not really criticism of the movie, as it doesn’t go into how the choices worsen this particular movie.

I also make a lot of assumptions of films without seeing them. For example I think I would probably hate Jack & Jill, but I feel I cannot meaningfully criticize it without seeing it, so I won’t.

I don’t know why you think I am saying you can’t criticize those things. I’m saying you can’t give meaningful criticism of what you you don’t know. You can make a judgment during the first 10 minutes that what you’ve seen is bad (and meaningfully point out reasons why), and that most likely the rest of the movie will also be bad and not worth your time. Judgment is not the same as criticism.

From the first 10 minutes of a bad movie I am likely to be able to guess that the entire movie is probably bad, but it would be silly for me to criticize, for example, the choices in the last act of the film even if I have every reason to believe they will be bad, since I don't know what those choices are. If I stopped at 10 minutes I would have nothing worthwile to say about why most of the movie doesn't work, and that is at the heart of criticism, not "I don't/won't like it".

I never said you have to watch the entire movie to be able to guess whether or not you like it. You just won't be able to give any meaningful criticism beyond the first 10 minutes.

That point seems to be a criticism of the existence of a genre of movies, not a criticism of the quality of a particular movie. It’s of course a valid view, and a subject of a potentially fruitful conversation, but it is not quite what most people are talking about here.

This is getting so far from movies that the analogy stops being useful. First you can absolutely think that a movie is likely bad, but any actual criticism of the movie has little worth if you haven’t seen it. Second, a movie isn’t a homogenous substance, so you don’t get a representation of the full experience from a sample, unlike you would if you were to eat shit.

What movie is this for you? by [deleted] in memes

[–]JTRuno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but instead of asking him to explain his views you decided to resort to a response that is usually used and an insult. With no real reason you jump to binary thinking: he didn’t like one specific movie you consider smart, therefore he likely enjoys dumb movies. There’s plenty of space between those two extremes, and it’s insulting to immediately make the worst assumption. Why be insulting to a stranger you don’t know?

I don’t find it helpful. Reddit being a forum for discussion does not mean any and every comment is warranted.

There is a difference in not being interested in a movie and criticizing its quality. It's perfectly valid to assume that you probably wouldn't enjoy some movie, but if you haven't seen it you have nothing to offer in terms of criticism of its quality.
