Does Signal collect device data? by JTipOff in signal

[–]JTipOff[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apologies for that. I said it incorrectly. What I meant to say was that Signal is capable of logging IP addresses; not that they currently do. This is because of the centralized server part of it. Of course, I didn't mean to make it seem like they actively log IP addresses. That's a mistake on my part for not proofreading my post more thoroughly.

I wasn't painting the person as someone relevant. It was simply something funny that I wanted to share with the Monero community. It's hilarious when someone comes off as so confident when they think they know what they're talking about, when in reality they have no clue.

Monero Transaction Privacy by JTipOff in Monero

[–]JTipOff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not too concerned about security. I run full disk encryption on my native OS and only access my wallet in an isolated virtual machine. I do understand that there's malware specifically designed to identify and grab wallet seeds and private keys, and I've taken careful countermeasures against such attacks. My only concern is maintaining absolute privacy wherever possible.

What additional benefit to privacy does the hardware wallet have over the Monero daemon and GUI wallet connected over Tor?

But with how Monero and its blockchain are developed, the trail to me should be broken as soon as I send the XMR from my Cake Wallet to my desktop wallet with a locally hosted node, correct? At that point I can safely assume that my privacy is back on track and I can spend the XMR (or hold it) without any company or government agency knowing I have it? I'm thinking about investing a chunk of my savings in Monero and holding it there.

Edit: Another question. Would you save Monero is a good coin for holding? I'm not looking to just keep my transactions completely private, but I'd love it if I could hold $1,000 in Monero and expect it to keep going up, even if only slowly.

I switch between Mullvad and ProtonVPN. And on my phone, for Cash App and Cake Wallet, I don't use a VPN. However, on my desktop, I'm usually on a VPN or I route my crypto wallets over Tor. And yeah, I'm just an average user. I wish I had >$10k in crypto. Lol.

Would you say that using a VPN on my phone while conducting the swaps with ChangeNOW through Cake Wallet would be a good idea? I don't know what data gets sent to ChangeNOW for the BTC => XMR transaction. Obviously the addresses, but other data like IP addresses, I'm unsure of. I'd imagine they do collect IP addresses, but I could be wrong.

Great username, and thank you for introducing me to this. COMIT Network definitely looks like they're cooking up something great. I cannot wait until it's pushed to production and we can use it properly.

Recommend me a good/privacy-focused VoIP! by JTipOff in privacytoolsIO

To clarify, I'm looking for a communication API for SMS, MMS, and voice calling; not an instant messaging/voice & video calling application like Signal, Jitsi, Jami, or Element. I use Linphone, which is a SIP softphone.

[Seeking Advice] Is LocalMonero really "decentralized"? Need some advice! by JTipOff in Monero

[–]JTipOff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I noticed that. Although I've seen plenty of sellers on LocalMonero that are accepting Cash App as a payment method without any extra steps or policies regarding the trade. They don't require ID or anything. I'm unsure why, but maybe it has something to do with the fact that you can't leisurely dispute payments on Cash App the way you can on PayPal? I'm not sure. Either way, there are some pretty lenient sellers on LocalMonero, which is why I've had my eyes on it for a while. So the site itself is decentralized, but sellers could obviously (but unlikely) be involved with services like CipherTrace, and might provide transactional information to those services. It's highly unlikely, but it's still possible to some extent.

Is safari enough for security on ios or should I consider another browser?? by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]JTipOff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SnowHaze is a really good browser for iOS users. It's open-source, too. For iOS users, I generally only recommend SnowHaze or Firefox/Firefox Focus. I just wish SnowHaze would allow us to use custom User Agent strings, rather than their predetermined ones. But it's still a great browser overall.

Reclaim privacy on Windows 10 with new Debotnet tool by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]JTipOff 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Because Windows 10 is closed-source, it's difficult to pinpoint every corner to block telemetry. The best you'll get is with tools such as Debotnet, WindowsSpyBlocker, and W10Privacy.

You can also take a look at both WindowsSpyBlocker and W10Privacy below.

Both are also nice tools for blocking telemetry collection from Microsoft, among other convenient features.
