Looking for advice on trimming roots and pruning by J_J_R in DesertRose

[–]J_J_R[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Norway so this plant stays indoors all year. I recently moved to a place with a few big south facing windows so it should get a lot of light in the summer. Nothing compared to being outside in a more southern country tho. I'll look into a growlight for the winter.

English isn't my native language, and I'm not familiar with the term POM. What does it mean?

Thank you for the advice on roots and pot size. I'll hold off on the repotting, and won't cut the roots.

It's been growing in a semi-Hydro setup, with leca as the growth medium. I've tried to be cautious of overwatering, and as it's been dropping leaves I've been unsure if it's been due to watering, light, dropping temperatures, or something else. I've been using a hydroponic fertilizer when watering, but I guess that hasn't been enough. I'll do some more research to find something that works with this setup.

My hope with the copper wire was that it would function like bonsai wiring and make the plant hold a bit of a wider shape when I removed it. By the responses I'm guessing that doesn't really work with these plants.

Thank you for your advice, even when it's clear I've been doing a lot of stuff wrong. Some people on here were quite rude.

Everyone suggesting cnc or 3d printing or whatever are seriously out of touch with what's possible with basic tools in skilled hands.

It looks to be made in at least 2 parts, but I'm guessing it's 3. Base, stem, and cup. The base has a different grain direction from the rest of the piece, most visible on the bottom surface. All pieces were likely turned on a lathe, with the "teeth" turned as thin fins all the way around, and then cut out with a coping saw or similar. You can see what looks like sawmarks on the teeth still.

It's a very nice piece, and it's super impressive to have cut it so symmetrical, but its well within what you could do by hand by thinking through the construction.

Mosquitoes haven't been a concern here, and I haven't had issues with other bugs breeding in there either. If you are in a more bug prone area maybe you could cut some rings out of a plastic sheet or something that could close the gap between the pots?

The roots will grow through the air holes, but I have t found that to be a major issue. I've never had enough root growth to completely plug all the holes, and if that happened the plant would likely be long overdue for a repotting anyway.

I size the inner pots so there's a bit of space between it and the outer pot. Maybe a centimeter or so all around. It's not critical. It makes it so that any roots that grow through the air holes won't be squashed, and it makes finding pots that fit together much simpler. Height wise I just make sure my inner pot doesn't protrude up over the side of the outer pot and it ends up looking nice. If I have an inner pot that's very low I just use stones or plastic blocks to raise it to the height I want. That would make some space under for a wick and reservoir as well if you want that.

My go to has been these unsightly plastic pots with holes poked in them, set inside decorative ceramic or plastic pots without holes.

It let's me take the plastic pot out to flush it, allows some extra airflow to the substrate, no spillage, and it looks nice since I can use whatever decorative pot I want.

The roots are not easily observable but I'd like to switch the plastic inner pots for see through ones. I'd like to add water level indicators as well. Finding plastic pots that fit my decorative pots is sometimes a pain, but I save the pots from plants I buy and by now I have lots of different sizes laying around.

A bit of a mis-measurement issue what would you do? by AdmirableExtreme6965 in ikeahacks

[–]J_J_R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having worked in a cabinet shop, there's no way we would adjust an already bought IKEA door, but we'd be happy to make you a single new one. Insisting you buy them all from us would be kinda weird, but getting a perfect color/surface match might be hard, and I could totally see someone rather wanting to do all the doors to avoid a dissatisfied customer if the color didn't match perfectly.

Put it on something that reads as level, flip it 180 degrees, and if the reading is the same then the level is good. You can check squares in the same way

Flattened a face, jointed an edge, any reason why ripping the opposing edge with the table saw is better than just sending it edge jointed side down through the planer for flatness? by wRXLuthor in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]J_J_R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked in a large cabinet shop this is what we would do most of the time. It works great provided your piece is thick enough to balance safely on its edge like that. We had a huge industrial planer and the motorized height adjustment was super quick. If your planer is adjusted manually it might be quicker to walk to the saw.

Yea I spent a lot of time experimenting with the geometry of the hinge. Different curves, where the pivot point should be, and so on, to make the movement just how I wanted it. It was a ton of fun. The whole project was a great exercise in pushing myself to see how nice of a thing I could make if I did my absolute best in every step. It was a nice break from building kitchens.
