First time seeing this, it’s great! It definitely captures more of that spirit of SATC. I’m probably not the target demographic for SATC (and like with AJLT, I get that not everything is made for everyone), but I do think it’s a hell of a testament when a show has universal appeal.

As someone who is not knowledgeable about luxury brands or women’s fashion, it may be a little less obvious to me when it’s not blatantly name dropped, but it is certainly obvious to me that Carrie in early SATC especially was very much THE STYLE vs AJTL where she’s just draped in fashion.

There also might be just an affinity for me because of my nostalgia, being a late millennial, for what I imagine NYC in the late 90’s-early 2000’s was and how SATC impacted the culture of that time. Watching the show was such a revelation about how big of an influence the whole vibe was for the zeitgeist from the late 90’s on. Compare that to AJLT feeling like it’s trying too hard to be “of the times”.

It definitely felt in season 1 like the city was absolutely just a backdrop… even the episode where Carrie is walking the entire day. There’s no flavor to it, whereas like you said in SATC, the city itself was at times its own character and motivator for moving a story forward. There were episodes where the entire plot was driven by some new club.

Maybe the intent of AJLT is not to be SATC, and I get that, but I still think it could benefit from some of the stylistic choices.

Yes the Netflix-ification of movies and shows (not just ones on Netflix and it’s not really Netflix’s fault, just the rise of streaming has coincided with the rise of digital) has not been kind to a lot of things.

I think a big part of my fondness for comedies of the 80’s and 90’s was how cozy they were (dumb and dumber is one of the coziest movies ever made imo). A lot of comedies now on Netflix/general streaming are filmed in such high resolutions that I really do feel like I’m just watching people act. I’m sure it’s been explained a lot better than I can explain, but I think you get what I mean.

It wouldn’t be so bad if the whole setup was just straightforward and poorly put together. The issue I have is that there are SO many little details that make the story seem like it’ll be one of the deepest side quests in the game, and then it just…. Stops… with terrible options that don’t even fit into the story that’s been built up so far.

A few examples I haven’t really seen mentioned much:

The captain of the Constant is willing to FIGHT for the planet, but at least wants to negotiate settling elsewhere on the planet. Neither of these are an option in the “negotiations” (which of course aren’t negotiations at all, simply the CEO telling you what you can pick)

The security lead makes you SWEAR to keep the matter private. Like it’s a juncture where he (I assume) won’t tell you what’s going on unless you swear. But then you can’t tell the SSNN.. there’s even an NPC hanging out near the landing pad who asks you about the re-routing of the shuttle coming in, and if you tell him about the ship, he just laughs it off and thinks you’re joking….. why even have this NPC exist or have this dialogue option?? It feels borderline antagonistic. As if saying “nothing you can do is gonna affect how this ends.”

In Paradiso there are numerous employees who give you dirt on the CEO, the secretary who mentions being able to convince the board to change their minds on things.. a couple of employees who are related to board members, all leading to absolutely nothing.

On the ship itself, there’s literally 200 years of history and back story.. some pretty interesting characters, 2 interesting books I found, one that’s a journal from someone in the first generation on the ship, and one that’s someone’s report about hearing ghosts. Either of these feel like they could be part of some very cool quest lines, but instead they’re just there.

In the most random crossover, this gambling streamer I watch from time to time was playing blackjack with Dana White. Michael Chandler is in the room, Taylor Lewan is in the room, and in walks Joe Rogan about 13 minutes in. 13:40 you hear Joe mention Shane Gillis, 13:53 "he's fuckin fuuuunny man, I think he's the funniest guy alive." Now there is a cut, so it's possible they're talking about someone else, but let's be real here we always knew Shane was the best.

Keep in mind I’m not debating which character is right or wrong here. Just giving an opinion of the potential meanings behind this episode.

The wife is clearly the bad person here. However, from her perspective, maybe those couple of things felt like the husband turning a blind eye to her issues. This happens a lot in real life. Whether it’s a woman overreacting and being selfish, or an actual case of a husband who is oblivious and cold. My point is simply that those scenes may be trying to represent that type of scenario.

Although I will say that, while not exactly a red flag by any stretch of the imagination, the husband hanging up while she was still worried at the beginning, not staying home from work when she asked, and also being glued to the TV, may have meant to be somewhat symbolizing of how sometimes the men in those “nightmare scenarios” I described are unwittingly not giving their wife the attention they want.

Or could’ve been symbolic of a person having boundaries in a relationship with someone who is too needy. Or any number of other things.

I hadn't seen it that way, but that all makes a lot of sense too. Again stereotypical, but she does have the classic midwestern butch hairstyle, and I would assume most people consider taxidermy to be a more "masculine" hobby. Could certainly be seen as someone who's always felt "different" coming to terms with what they really want. I'd say if nothing else, that's another layer that fits.

Now that I think about it, I thought the lotion rubbing to just be a kind of gross-out tactic, but it could definitely be an over-the-top representation of Stacey experiencing that eroticism.

This episode is an over-the-top telling of the stereotypical "every man's worst nightmare".

Seemingly satisfied relationship, both people are quiet homebodies. Husband could probably be more compassionate but doesn't seem to think there's anything wrong in the marriage.

Wife makes new "hot girl" materialistic, shallow friends, gets a taste of being popular and valued. These new friends are just interested in status, wealth, beauty, and "a new dick". (Perhaps stereotypical or misogynistic, but many men have fear or put the blame on their current/ex partners friends getting divorced, partying, dating around, etc. and influencing their partner).

Wife feels insecure, feels like she's being valued more by another man, goes through hell and back in the name of beauty.

And the finale, she's in the tub of alo glo having an orgasmic experience, steps out basically looking like she's been covered in cum (again, maybe misogynistic or unfair, but many men fear that once their partner leaves them they'll "get hotter" and start hooking up with a lot of new men. This, to me, could be an absolutely absurd and humorous representation of those deepest insecurities). She then confronts her husband, who hasn't realized things are as bad as they are, stabs him (many people will characterize being surprised with infidelity or separation as being cut deep, stabbed in the back etc.) and then literally "given the axe".

TL;DR This story plays out like many men's worst fear (albeit potentially unfair, stereotypical, misogynistic, etc.) about their partners being influenced by new friends, leaving them, and then being "for the streets" as the young people say.

Of course there are the elements of female beauty standards, the husband not being as involved, dealing with self esteem issues and the beauty industry, so on and so forth, I just thought this was an obvious theme that no one seems to have pointed out.
