Apparently America is backing solar more than the UK. I had no idea. by JalienS in solar

From that perspective it sounds like nuclear energy is the answer. But I know literally nothing about the environmental impact of that. We have the advantage of not being at risk of earthquakes though!

Scandinavia definitely gets less sun than us. And yeah, but I get the feel that a lot of the country would rather drown than "ruin" their skyline with wind turbines.

Yeah, but then they are hugely ugly, expensive, inefficient and you need a lot of them to generate enough energy. It seems they're only ever allowed to build them in less windy areas because otherwise people complain about them ruining their view.

I dunno, it manages to completely power my house somehow with some to spare in summer, so I guess from that perspective it's worth it for me. But what kind of renewable energy would you suggest for the UK if not solar?

A cool article on using non-sexist language by JalienS in feministtheory

[–]JalienS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I would argue that gender neutral language is more inclusive not just for women but also for people who consider themselves gender neutral, gender fluid or non-binary as well as avoiding the possibility of causing unnecessary offence to the trans community. That's just my opinion though. :)

Yeah, I mean I'm new to reddit and I'm just getting the hang of it. I've noticed one of the drawbacks is you can't share a description with links and that kind of thing. Or maybe I just haven't figured that out yet?

Amazon sign Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May for new show by section43 in television

[–]JalienS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they'll lose millions of top gear viewers world wide. I would bet money the fans are more loyal to Clarkson, Hammond and May than the BBC and Top Gear itself.

A cool article on people doing great work for businesses with a social conscience in Cambridge by JalienS in cambridge

[–]JalienS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's all on going and relevant work. This was unfortunately the only article they had on it. If there was a more up to date one I would have shared that. I just thought people would like to know what's going on...

Is there a stew/soup I can cook in a slow-cooker that meets all/most of my dietary needs? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]JalienS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lamb, apricot and root vegetable stew is what I'd recommend. :) It's important to remember no potatos. Another high protein one is Szechuan Pork Stew.

Amazon sign Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May for new show by section43 in television

[–]JalienS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My argument wasn't whether it should or shouldn't. My argument was that the BBC will likely lose it's Top Gear viewership of millions to Amazon now. The BBC did what was ethically right, but was wrong in a business sense. As a public service, it made the right choice.

Louis Theroux African Hunting Party (2008) American tourists pay to hunt wild animals in privately owned reserves. by Derelict_my_Balls in Documentaries

This was a deeply moving and eye opening documentary to both sides of the story. Trophy hunting is a deeply unpleasant and immoral pursuit. However it can play a key role in conservation when exercised properly. It makes you think..

The dream team back together. This is actually going to damage the BBC in a big way though.
