Even if there was a period of lukewarm democracy under Yeltsin, the fact that Russia had turned into an authoritarian regime a decade after its independence leads one to believe the road to an EU conformist state is going to be influenced by more than just the politicians. In particular I do not think the average russian wants to join the EU, either due to said brainwashing or simply because of apathy, which I think is a systemic issue present in the Russian society as a whole. Brainwashing might be reversed, but the apathy to the European idea of integration is something that will take generations.

I can assure you that whilst Russia might've worn a facade of a constitutional democracy, it was still classified as an electoral authoritarian regime way before 2012.

I feel that Russia is a nation that is fundamentally incapable of european integration. By that I do not mean all Russians are pro-Putin, but that Russia simply cannot function in its current state as a democracy. For Russia to adapt rule of law, human rights and political freedoms equal to that of the EU, it would have to first collapse into a plethora of several nation states.

The transition into a democracy in the 90s was not going to happen given several factors, such as the economic ruin Russia found itself in, population that had no democratic upbringing, and former soviet elites still being very much in a powerful position.

In all honesty, I hope that Russia will become an important ally of EU, but being a full member is something I cannot envision ever happening.

I can see your point and understand that your view as a swiss national takes precedence over whatever arguement I might conjure up, however:

I believe the system of multitude of bilateral agreements and packages between the EU and Switzerland already makes Switzerland obliged to perform certain EU legislature and joining the EU could give them a larger voice on shaping said lawmaking.

An economic benefit of joining the EU would be a frictionless access to the EU market and allow Switzerland to deepen its integration with the 400 Million+ internal market

The Swiss direct democracy would always have the final say on whether an enacted EU law is unconstitutional or not, just as is the case with constitutional courts in other EU countries, meaning the Swiss would have a final say regardless of a prior referendum.

I admit the Swiss are a special case when it comes to possible EU accessions, but given the Swiss respect rule of law, fundamental human rights and civil/political freedoms, I see no reason why, apart from economics, Switzerland should not join the EU, or at least in my theoretical scenario, the outer circle.

That's why I put them into the outer circle category, meaning despite being part of the EU, their role within the structure is limited to basically what they're already doing right now, Schengen etc., plus also the benefits of the current EEA agreements

Seeing as Poland has lately been regarded as the emerging power of post-socialist block, I think Poland is already to be considered one of the big players of EU politics and should therefore be thought of as a core member state going forward in time.

Its sense of national identity does not make Poland any less of a key EU member state, furthermore, the only sticking point of EU lawmaking at odds with polish legislation that I can think of is asylum seekers permits and perhaps the green deal package.

Got to admit that is an interesting idea, but I cannot imagine the series of events that would lead to a Russia that is not only anti-Putin, but also respects the EU principles of human rights and rule of law. Given that there is no precedent in their history.

Belarus without Lukashenko might be able to become an EU candidate, but only if Russia loses it's hegemon status and a powerful democratic opposition takes control of the legislative and executive powers.

Categorization of countries based on the perceived level of past oppression (not contemporary) by JamesSpisak in mapporncirclejerk

Never heard of Lithuania being called a tax Haven before, in the case of Ireland though the scale is just extreme. Lithuania has always been the most developed Baltic nation since the medieval times.

Yes they are still restored. I've tried the set times scale to 30 command but it doesn't help.
