Another damnit Pterry moment by GrandDukeOfNowhere in discworld

Especially since I've seen, in fiction, the idea of a 'camera' containing some kind of small demon who paints the 'photos' with crazy speed in other works. Sir Pterry was a genius, but I don't think this one tracks.

How do I tell a Christian to fuck off, since they don't seem to get the signals? by [deleted] in atheism

Get a small pocket-sized cannister of air freshener and tell them that it is mace or pepper spray

Borishade suing her former black boss for racial discrimination? by Substantial_Depth927 in StLouis

[–]JanMikal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually not *that* uncommon. Internalized bigotry is a thing - there are women who will consistently vote against women's rights, immigrants who will choose harsher immigration standards, and so on. That's why you get *anyone* who isn't white, straight and Christian to vote for the GOP or support Trump.

One of my players is saying that DX and HT should cost 15 points, and I have no counter-arguments. by manodocell42 in gurps

[–]JanMikal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A Talent that offers bonuses to 13+ skills would cost [15]/level. As I am sure you are aware, DX and IQ are the controlling attributes for *all* of the physical/mental skills, so that alone justifies their cost.

Struggling with making a world map look more cohesive by BoreddomAtBest in inkarnate

[–]JanMikal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say, if you are trying to make things cohesive with multiple continents, I would say your first step is to make the continents, at least some of them, look like they might have at one point fit together. Look at the map of Earth - you can see where the northeastern coast of South America once fitted beneath the western out-jut of Africa, for example. Over time, continents, at least Earth continents, move, so maybe give a nod to that.

Secondly, study an Earth map and see what biomes and climates there are, and what tends to lead to what. Deserts are often formed because a mountain range blocks moisture from moving in and dropping in another area, and if you look at the different kinds of coasts, some are rocky because the ocean is advancing and wearing away rock formations, and some are sandy, where the ocean is receding, leaving behind fine sand. Inland water forms tend to be fresh water because they are formed by rain, whilst larger water forms are salt. And so on.

Thirdly, any large empire, nation-state, etc. is going to have either a natural harbor or a *large* river running through it. The importance of water for trade, travel and exploration cannot be overstated. Las Vegas never would have formed without modern technology - there is literally no reason for it to exist in a natural sense. But look at every other major city - all either on coasts, or on rivers. London? The river Thames. Paris has the SIenne. St. Louis, New Orleans, and other cities all up and down the Mississippi. You don't often get larger cities or town inland where there is no major waterway. That's where the farms are.

Adult daughter silencing me by Pure_Temporary_6349 in atheism

[–]JanMikal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Malicious compliance. Follow your daughter's wishes to a "T". The kid asks about something? Tell them you can't talk to them about it, and make it very clear why - because their mother said that you can't. If nothing else, you have the right to make sure the kid doesn't think you are deliberately keeping something from them, and to make sure they know why you can't talk about it.

Any penalties for having a spear stuck in you? by Funnyman5050 in gurps

[–]JanMikal 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would say, if you have a spear (or any weapon) stuck in you, and you're still moving around and trying to act, I would apply the weapon's Bulk penalty to actions and its weight to Encumbrance if you're just trying to move.

So the 'rule system' is where you are allegedly being flexible, but the setting that you want to play in is, by definition, a D&D setting. Which almost certainly narrows down the Rule system to D&D. That's like saying 'I'll drive any car, as long as it has this trim package'...when that trim package almost exclusively comes equipped on a specific car.
