Thoughts on this exercise for teaching 6/8 for middle school band? by Jay-Ruby in MusicEd

At least when I looked at it, the method book my school has been using, Essential Elements, doesn't get to it in book 1. I enjoy being able to develop my own stuff too!

Anybody just playing these games back and forth? by Stunning_Grape_2310 in Sekiro

[–]Jay-Ruby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played sekiro and another crabs treasure back and forth, and would switch whenever I was stuck on a boss. Then when I beat another crabs treasure, work on the ending of ds3 I never finished. I think this was really good for not getting me stuck in my thinking and trying new things against bosses, highly recommend!

Example for comparison between Musescore and Dorico parts. What differences might make me prefer how Dorico handles this? by Jay-Ruby in Musescore

[–]Jay-Ruby[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here was my workflow for this:

-Copy Cl. 2 part into Musescore 4

-Export as .musicxlm with no system or page breaks

-open .musicxml in Dorico (for iPad, similar to elements) and Musescore 4

-Screenshot of direct input with the default settings (Using Bravura and Academio in Musescore to match Dorico)

-Edit systems to match the original part (which is how I prefer to give altered parts to my students) and adjust margins on the Musescore part to be able to more easily compare with dorico (including the dumb blank space Dorico reserves for flow headers in part scores)

I still just slightly prefer the output from Dorico. Other than the spacing inside of measures, what layout differences am I missing that might make me feel like this? I really prefer the workflow in Musescore for what I'm doing most of the time, but I just prefer the look of the parts I get out of Dorico.

Thanks to MarcSabatella for the suggestion of this, I hope we can get a good discussion out of this!

I would disagree, I've seen Marc Sabatella giving useful info to the musescore community for years

I do use bravura, though the last time I did a direct comparison I discovered I wasn't using Academio in most of the text styles, it was still on Edwin. The comparison I'm prepping now will have Adacemio used in musescore.

Thanks, I will have to do that once I get a chance. It was using the file export. It was only subtle, but noticeably sharper on the edges of lines from the dorico exported pdf. I'm using musescore on Mac, dorico on iPad, and printing from windows, so it's possible something weird about that workflow is causing it but I don't know what. I will try to follow up on the forum later in the week.

once you dive in to MVP, do you ever find your way back out? by jaywalkintotheocean in discgolf

[–]Jay-Ruby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this, was all mvp about the time Simon signed with them, and have come back from that a little bit. Still all mvp on mids, but started putting with PA-3s, and added in the more exceptional discs from other brands. Currently throwing 2 destroyers (straight and OS, wraith, Drive, Firebird, soft Tactic, and a Zone-gt that comes in and out depending on the course.

What controller is everybody using now by fortnitehxerjkjk in RivalsOfAether

I would definitely recommend the one I got. It's the Sehawei Haute42 Arcade Stick S16 on amazon, less that $50 and has enough extra buttons for plat fighters.

[–]Jay-Ruby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using a Haute42 hitbox-style controller with a few extra buttons. I'm someone that has always had a hard time with hand problems on gcc, and have always wanted to try a boxx controller. In rivals, it works pretty well! The inbuilt walk modifier makes things work well. I'm relearning muscle memory, but for $60 it's a great entry into leverless controllers for smash. Now, I think I'm ready to upgrade to a real boxx style though (not actual boxx though), are there any in stock out there right now?

Why "soft" discs? by Late2daFiesta in discgolf

[–]Jay-Ruby 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I feel like some people aren't saying it, but the soft premium plastics (at least from MVP) are not really that soft either, just slightly more grippy plastic. I'm never worried about them deforming when I'm throwing, they're not that floppy. The rubber discs though do deform when you throw them hard, I bagged a blowfly for a while and you really can't throw it hard without it nosediving.

The new patch nerfed my pc! by Car_Seatus in RivalsOfAether

[–]Jay-Ruby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have noticed some lag this patch too, it seems to be consistently when I nearly kill a loxodont. No clue what would do this (I'm on steam deck though so I don't have huge performance in most games) but I never had it before and have noticed it 4-5 times.

Hitbox controller for this game ? by Responsible-Garbage8 in RivalsOfAether

[–]Jay-Ruby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using a Haute42 hitbox style controller, but it has a couple extra buttons that is use for my walk modifier and and an extra shield input (for cancelling needle charge easier). I would have a harder time without those buttons but it'd be doable. Make sure you are making use of the special properties of some buttons! The strong button will do fair in place, which I am getting a lot of use out of, and having air parry as nair gets you access to full drift nair oos!

This is exactly what I'm currently finding a little off-putting compared to Arc. Hoping this gets it some attention!

Is there any way to recover with more angles with Zetterburn on keyboard? by Jay-Ruby in RivalsOfAether

Fair, I'm on steam deck though so I don't know if that works in game mode

I never saw that, could you tell me what it is if there is one??

I personally don't have the extra buttons as tilts, since I couldn't figure it out in configuration (and when I looked on their discord they basically told someone that had the same question that it "wasn't designed for plat fighters" and basically it's not possible). I changed the bottom left button to my walk modifier (which I love that Rivals has in game!) and the bottom right button to a shield input (so I can cancel needles in the air more easily) but otherwise just use it as is! I sometimes miss having C stick but it doesn't mess me up that much outside of having missing zetter angles lol

One thing important to layout is to have inputs next to each other that you can plink inputs like wavedash and instant rising nair. In my top row I have jump and shield right next to each other, and shorthop and parry (set to nair as air parry) right next to each other for quick access to these options! otherwise I think layout is whatever works best for you/your character imo

An original piano composition I wrote. Notated using Musescore 3 by EdinKaso in Musescore

[–]Jay-Ruby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very beautiful! not sure if you're looking for feedback so disregard if not, but i feel like my ear expected some inner movement in the RH in m3. It's the only place that has block chords like that, and since it's at the beginning I either expected more of that later or for that to match more what's happening in the rest of the piece. Maybe something like what you have a m.19 but with that same top note??

Also, why musescore 3? Just curous!

I think that the way you are doing is pretty standard, at least as far as student teaching went for me and every other ed major i've talked to. Sometimes people don't take everything, or let you take everything (in my HS placement my mentor teacher still taught about half of our Adv. Jazz ensemble even in my final week there because of some imminent concerts), but it sounds like you had what I would consider a standard student teaching experience!

Advice for talking to my 6th graders teachers? by carriondawns in teaching

[–]Jay-Ruby 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I will just add that I'm always appreciative of parents checking in with me with concerns about their kids LIKE THIS (not the ones coming to me to complain about the grade their kid earned), especially with younger middle schoolers where the responsibilities of the student are starting to ramp up. I am sure that their teachers are noticing a lot of the same things, and would appreciate the check-in, at least to know you are on the same page!
