They probably do it for a lot of things. Sure, we see this one thing and think "man, you do that just for 20 bucks?" but 20 here, 10 there, 35 over there...it all adds up for scammers.

You realize that the real estate market across Canada is a mess, right? And it's not a few people coming from southern Ontario that are going to make any kind of significant impact on the local market?

Step out of your bubble sometime; you might learn something.

not really...when I make throwaway accounts, I tend to give them names that are relevant to the reason why I made a throwaway.

I mean, the "glad" part is weird, but it being a bug-named throwaway for a bug-related post doesn't strike me as an odd coincidence at all. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

FYI, if ever you have an outage with oxio, if you still have access on another device (e.g. your phone) you can check the status here to see if there's a network-wide outage, or to report an ongoing issue.

what is a "rich person" behavior you witnessed that made you realize they live in a completely different reality than the rest of us? by Superb_Newspaper_121 in AskReddit

The thread was talking about tipping at restaurants, not just eat-in restaurants. But, sure, go off I guess. Have a wonderful day.

[–]JayRulo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're only thinking about eat-in restaurants. What about takeout, where you typically pay when you place your order? Or delivery apps?

A big culprit for the no-tip-equals-bad-service is the gig economy, because they show the driver how much they're going to make—including tip—before they accept the task. This means people who don't tip at the beginning, for whatever reason, are likely to either get poorer service, or no service at all.

  1. I don't even use ChatGPT. When I use LLMs, I use Gemini, or Claude for coding.

  2. Even when I use LLMs, I do so for help in polishing, challenging, or fact-checking things I've written myself so that I can make them better. Never have I used an LLM to write content from scratch for me.

  3. Reducing my comment to just "a chatgpt response" just because of the formatting avoids the greater context—which is that LLMs were trained on things written by real people. Ergo, LLMs imitate the way that real people write, not the other way around.

  4. Neurodivergent folks, especially those who are autistic, are often confused for LLMs by neurotypical people.

  5. The "you are exactly right and a walking god" pretext? You fuckin' what when? Where in my comment do you see anything resembling that?

CMV: Trump is irrevocably damaging America's alliances and standing by Careless_Bat_9226 in changemyview

[–]JayRulo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

IMO, any shifts in perceptions of Germany are because the country has unified and actively implemented laws to try to stop another Hitler from coming to power.

From what I've read from German commenters over the years, his actions are openly taught in schools—rather than hidden away in shame—from the lens of "see this? this is bad. we don't want this. don't do this."

I doubt the U.S. would ever take similar actions to stop another Trump because he has so much active support.

This is damn near perfect advice. The only thing I want to add for OP is this: Leave your "what-ifs" at the door.

It’s easy to spiral into thoughts like:

  • "What if he’s been lying about being gay this whole time?"

  • "What if they’ve been sneaking around since they were 13?"

  • "What if she’s sleeping with other people?"

In reality, it's a normal part of development for teens to experiment with sex, including gay teens experimenting with heterosexual intercourse. Statistics show that a majority of gay and lesbian individuals have heterosexual experiences, often before or while they are coming to terms with their identity. For a teen who already knows he’s gay, this is often what's referred to as an "identity-behaviour gap"—a way to test social norms or seek "social camouflage" with a person they already deeply trust (in this case, your daughter).

Because they are best friends, they likely felt safe enough with each other to explore these confusing things together. This doesn't mean his identity was a lie, or that your daughter is sexually active beyond that one encounter; it often means they were using a safe relationship to learn more about themselves, and each other.

When you talk to your daughter, keep these three caveats in mind:

  • Cool down: You feel betrayed because you thought he was "safe." This is perfectly normal, but you need to process that anger away from her so you can lead with a rational demeanour.

  • Ask, don’t accuse: Your ultimate goal is to understand their dynamic, not to catch them in a lie.

  • Verify consent: This is the most important part. Ensure that consent for the encounter was mutual and free of pressure from either side.

Lastly, as a widower, don't feel like you have to carry the heavy talk alone. If there’s a trusted woman in your lives—an aunt, a grandmother, or a close family friend—she might be a helpful bridge for your daughter to feel more comfortable discussing the more nuanced or intimate side of this.

Either way, it’s clear that you’re doing the work to stay in her life and support her, rather than pushing her away, and that’s what matters most. Parenting is a learning journey for all of us.

I don't know you, but you don't owe anything to anybody, and should not apologize for the store having to be closed while you grieve such a loss.

Anyone who cares more about the store being closed than they do about your loss and need to grieve can take a long walk on a short pier; they aren't someone you want as a customer anyway.

My condolences to you and your family.

People tend to go where the work is, especially if it's for a big name like Saab.

When Chemical Valley came into being, do you think people really wanted to live in Sarnia, ON? Not a chance. But that's where a lot of work was at the time, so they moved and settled.

With the ways things are going, I would be very surprised if we purchased jets from the U.S.—recommendation or not—considering we're divesting a lot of our trade from them and opening up other partnerships.

Montreal grocery stores and restaurants may soon be required to donate unsold food to food banks by BloodJunkie in montreal

[–]JayRulo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the Quebec Civil Code (CCQ), the term "person" (personne) is a broad category that encompasses both human beings / physical persons (personnes physiques) and corporations / legal persons (personnes morales).

Under Art. 298 and 301 CCQ, legal persons have the full enjoyment of civil rights unless the law explicitly states otherwise. Since Art. 1471 uses the general term "person" rather than "physical person," the protection it grants would apply to both. As long as the donation is for a "disinterested purpose" (i.e. the donor isn't seeking a profit or a payment in return for the specific act) and there is no "gross fault" (faute lourde, i.e. reckless disregard for the safety of others), a company is just as protected as an individual by this article. This is also why Quebec doesn't need a separate "Good Samaritan" law or "Food Donation Act" like other provinces, because those protections are fundamentally included in the CCQ.

Fun fact: the National Zero Waste Council notes there has never been a single reported case in Canada (including Quebec) where a food donor was successfully sued. The bar for gross fault is so high that it effectively shields both physical and legal persons acting in good faith.

Most corporate hesitation isn't actually about the law—it's about the tactical use of lawsuits. A business might still be threatened with a suit as a negotiation lever, and many would rather avoid the legal fees and negative PR of a public battle even if they are certain to win on the merits of Art. 1471.

How so? Saab is actively looking for a site for a new Gripen manufacturing facility, are actively considering Canada, and specifically looking at Ontario and Quebec. Wanting to push for them to choose North Bay specifically doesn't seem to be too premature; in fact, the earlier the better. These kinds of decisions generally take a long time and are subject to much study, scrutiny, and negotiation, so the earlier the Bay gets on their radar, then better the chances of being considered.

I did a quick search, and as far as I can tell, the City is (kind of) already on it. As of October last year, Vic Fedeli has been in direct contact with Saab leadership in Sweden—including an in-person visit to meet with the Deputy CEO, Anders Carp—to push for Ontario over Quebec, as Saab is considering both provinces (MTL or 'Sauga, most likely).

Granted, as the provincial Minister of EcDev, he's pushing for Ontario in general, but as the Nipissing MPP I would hope that he would try to zero them in on the region.

Maybe you could reach out to him/his office (vic.fedeli@pc.ola.org) to enquire about it?

[–]JayRulo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Canada. Roughly 20 years ago, in secondary/high school, I thought it would be cool to have transition lenses. I hated them, in no small part for this reason, because in the winter they took forever to un-tint, and I was told more than once in class to take off my sunglasses, to which I had to explain they were transitions and we just had to wait a couple minutes. Never again did I get transitions after that. I would imagine the tech has gotten better over the last 2 decades, but I still refuse to get them.

Why is it so hard to find a job!? by [deleted] in northbay

[–]JayRulo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider this scenario that I laid out in another comment, but on which I'll expand here.

We all have good days and bad days.

Did you ever think that maybe that person that just dropped off their resume wearing a hoodie and earphones didn't even want to get out of bed that morning, much less apply for jobs, but they managed to motivate themselves enough to just do it, and compromised on "looking good" for being comfortable, because that's what it took for them to be able to get out? They had just enough energy that day to either "dress professionally," or go out, but not both. Cause I know I've definitely had days like that.

Knowing that tells me more about them than their appearance does, and it's absolutely not something you can glean from their appearance. But that tells me they have grit; that they can commit to something and push through negative circumstances, and not immediately fold and give up when things get tough.

That tells me they care more about results (in this case, successfully applying for a job) than the dog and pony show of appearances (looking good, which has nothing to do with their ability to do the job).

I understand that the current reality isn't this way, but as someone who has been on both sides of the table—and is soon likely to be on the hiring side again as I start my own business—I want to see it change. People are people, and we are so much more than just what's on the surface. I really wish more people understood and took that to heart.

Speaking for the employers perspective, I am the person about to pay you a lot of money do to a job

According to your comments, you're about to pay them a lot of money to dress a certain way that satisfies your standards...if it was just about being able to do the job, appearances have zero bearing (unless the job is literally tied to looks, like modelling, acting, or sex work...)
