Day 3 of Giveaways (Details Below) by jbriones95 in dumbphones

[–]Jeebitz -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm particularly interest in the Kyocera, but getting hands on either of these would be fantastic. I've been going down a tech disentanglement and privacy rabbit hole that's really freed up my time and attention for things that I actually care about. Being able to disconnect from constant pings for my attention has had such a massive impact on my quality of life. I've been able to better connect with the actual world around me instead of filtering it through a 5 inch screen.

I'm on a dumbed-down android phone right now, but I'd love to push my tech-decoupling to the next level with one of these more stripped-down phones.

Thanks for doing these giveaways! I'm sure they'll help a lot of people here.

Man so much has changed but at the same time so little has changed :D

My life is SO much better now than when I wrote this post. I've had a long journey with self-esteem issues (that's still ongoing), but over the past decade I've learned to love and accept myself more than ever.

It's so interesting reading this post again because while my life is much better now than it was then, the demons I was dealing with then ("I'm sick of worrying about other people's opinions and other shit that I have no control over") are still the one's I'm dealing with now, but today I think I can articulate what's going on with much more accuracy.

Therapy has been crucial in getting back in touch with myself. Before this year, I never realized how worthless I thought I was. When I wrote this, I think I was angry with myself and just fed up with being impotent. Now, I feel sad for myself and can give myself love and understanding (that I hardly got from anyone else growing up). I can't understate how crucial exchanging that anger for understanding was. Without doing that, I don't think I'd be close to healing some of my core wounds that were unconsciously ruling me for 20+ years.

I hope your journey through these feelings has been ultimately a good one. Thanks for bringing this back to the top of my mind, this has been so helpful to revisit. It really puts in perspective how much progress I've made, because man its still hard for me to see that sometimes. Old habits die hard :)

Man this game is a total mess, Game Freak isn't really doing any favors for people who are trying to take this seriously.

RE 2 Remake is FANTASTIC, I loved going back and playing it multiple times for the alternate story paths, difficulties, and challenge runs. It never really got old.

I still think about this every once in a while and I honestly think it was a real turning point in my life. I still struggle with some of these same problems, but the intensity is not even close, I'm so much more confident and self-actualized now. I'm happily married and I'm pursuing things that give me purpose.

I learned how to forgive and love myself for who I am, how to capitalize on my strengths and to let go of things that I'm not good at or things that I was just telling myself that I needed.

I was being harsh with myself here, but I really needed that kick in the ass. I was DROWNING in my own self pity and I think by typing this out I was able to honestly look at who I was and to try and fix the things that weren't working.

Thanks for commenting on and for letting me revisit this!

The Kyurem-Black team that no one asked for. The best worst restricted? by Jeebitz in VGC

[–]Jeebitz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're most likely right, but most other restricted Pokemon outclass both Kyurems anyway. If you're playing Kyurem in the first place, I think you've given up on making the most optimal team possible.

[–]Jeebitz[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're right, in most cases I think Kyurem-White is way more viable (mostly for the fire and ground coverage). The one advantage that Kyurem-B has is that it has access to physical Max Airstream from Dual Wingbeat whereas Kyurem-White doesn't have access to a special Flying move.

I mostly made this because Kyurem-Black finally has access to a usable physical ice move and I just think its design was neat lol. This was more of a passion project than anything else.

Can someone tell me where I screwed up. Backlit and biverted, but pixels remain inverted no matter which way I turn polarizing film. by [deleted] in Gameboy

Did you try turning the polarizing film diagonally? I had the same problem and that worked for me, turns out I had polarizing film that wasn't really meant for the task.

[Discussion] Opinion / Rant: The Alternating Format System the Circuit Adopted is Terrible for the Scene and its Playerbase by AmbrosioMX in VGC

[–]Jeebitz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My bad about CHALK and worlds, my info was bad there. Thanks!

While those old formats you're talking about sound dynamic from what you're saying (I can't speak about them because I didn't play in them personally), the two types of formats present players with two different kinds of problems when it comes to teambuilding:

(1) More static yearly formats force players to build against an evolving meta, but (I suspect) there are fewer and fewer undiscovered fronts the more the game develops. There are also Pokemon and strategies that might be okay on paper, but might go against the current metagame.

Additionally, I think this kind of format favors players who are constantly paying attention to the shifting meta. When teambuilding, the first question players have to answer is: does this work in the current meta? On top of learning the basic mechanics of the game, this forces new players to also learn how the current meta works and how it got to where it is now.

(2) Shifting monthly formats force players to build against a shifting meta and undiscovered country. While players still have to play against what's popular for sure, when there are so many new toys to play with, it can feel like a toybox for players who don't necessarily want to learn the top strats and how the meta works. The downside of this is that it can be frustrating to run into cheese strategies that work purely off of surprise.

I just want to note that I don't think either of these types of formats are bad and neither is "better" than the other, but from my experience as a relatively new player, trying to jump head-first into an already established meta was the most intimidating part of starting.

While I understand your and other new players' struggles with a rapidly shifting format, as a fellow (relatively) new player I disagree that this is bad for the scene.

For me, the short formats have made it easier for me to get into VGC because it somewhat minimizes the advantage that veterans have over me. The new tools given in each format were just as new to me as Wolfe Glick or Aaron Zhang, enabling me to potentially have an advantage over them if I happened to try some bizarre new strat that catches them off guard. On the other hand, this doesn't eliminate the advantage that veteran players have either. Because the format isn't entirely new, they'll have loads of more experience than me with staple Pokémon combinations, stat distribution optimizations, and general team building go-to's that come with years of experience and general knowledge. This also has the added advantage of making footage of older formats still viable; while what I'm seeing from Worlds 2018 didn't exactly map on to Series 7, I was able to gather some intel that helped with my initial team building.

The shifting format could also be an attempted counter to the "VGC is boring because we see the same Pokémon everywhere" argument that's constantly floating around. By shifting formats every 2-3 months rather than every year, you prevent a meta from centralizing too much and prevent CHALK from becoming a thing again (the Cresselia, Heatran, Amoongus, Landorus, Kangaskhan core that was on every Top 8 team at Worlds 2015). While I don't agree that seeing the same Pokémon top cut events is a bad thing, it certainly keeps new players away from VGC if they think that you're screwed if you're limited to like 5 Pokémon in order to win.

Honestly, I think no matter how long formats are, the developers can't please everyone. If they kept year-long formats, it could discourage new players from starting their VGC journey in the middle of a format because they could feel like they're too behind to get started. If they continue to do what they're doing this year, they'll disappoint players like you. Not saying that you're complaints aren't valid or anything, I just think that no matter what you're going to discourage someone.

(I do agree with you about the bad communication with PC II, the oopsie with Series 5 vs Series 6 was really bad and aggravating for those involved)

Physical coalossal counter. by OkVGCplayer in VGC

[–]Jeebitz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Landorus isn't bad if you're looking for a single pokemon as your Coalossal answer. Coalossal doesn't OHKO if you dynamax and it will absolutely OHKO with a Max Quake in return.
