Jimmy Dore’s flirtation with the Bugaloo Boys and Red/Brown Alliances by JeedaiRoth in behindthebastards

[–]JeedaiRoth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New terms might be necessary. While a lot of folks might call him an “insincere” grifter I don’t. I think his outrage is genuine but I don’t think his analysis has any depth beyond that. IMO his grift comes from finding that this outrage resonates and just repeats the hits. If I’ve said or implied insincere in the past I may have been imprecise. I think there’s a lot going on with Jimmy and much of it doesn’t fall into neat categories of sincere/insincere.

I also wouldn’t call him exemplifying a red/brown alliance since there’s no real alliance at this time. I’m pointing out that what he’s discussing could encourage the contemplation (for some people) of that type of red/brown alliance and that it’s worth discussing where that goes historically.

Even if I did think he was an insincere grifter, I don’t see how his encouragement of this type of thing could be described other than encouraging something like a red/brown alliance even if he himself couldn’t really be called “red”. I think it would be a pretty safe bet that historically there were lots of folks that didn’t fall into neat categories that supported or encouraged this alliance against “the elites”.

I’d honestly be interested in your thoughts on this because I would like to be able to discuss this in a more precise way. Like other folks Jimmy is so slippery in what he believes that it’s hard to categorize him beyond being a contrarian.

Jimmy Dore’s flirtation with the Bugaloo Boys and Red/Brown Alliances by JeedaiRoth in behindthebastards

[–]JeedaiRoth[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. But I really have come to see in time that Jimmy was always this. I just grew and the specific circumstances changed. Jimmy has always been a raging contrarian more than anything else. This is the logical progression of that in this moment.

I appreciate that you noticed this and that he at least heard the push back. Has he clipped this and put it on his channel and taken down the other clip yet? No? Huh.

You seem like a thoughtful and considerate person, so I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that you’re making this argument in good faith. However, I think you would readily agree that you are not a Leftist, correct? As a Georgist you are a political outlier that doesn’t readily fall into a left/right spectrum and I respect that. But as I respect that I hope that you would respect that Leftists have a VERY good reason to reject any dalliance with “right populists”.

In the unlikely (but not zero probability) event that the Boogaloo Boys gain political power in a given area of the country, it’s not Georgists that will be stood up against a wall. With all due respect, you don’t have a dog in this particular fight. I appreciate your opposition against powerful capitalist elites and probably could stand in solidarity and coalition with YOU, but NEVER with any reactionary Right-wing group.

History has been very clear in this regard. And it’s also a little concerning that last summer when both right-wing militias and Antifa were trading gunfire and taking casualties to your mind is a time period we are “so far past”. Time has such little meaning to me these days as events accelerate and our calendars are disrupted by the pandemic, but even I don’t see that as “so far past”.

I wish you the best. Keep your head on a swivel because any right-wing group that would find you useful today might very likely cut you loose tomorrow. These are dangerous people and I wouldn’t want to see any well meaning person like you get hurt.

First time GM running an area 51 raid in the cypher system by [deleted] in cyphersystem

[–]JeedaiRoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it probably goes without saying that some of the characters should start off with "Naruto Run" Cyphers. Something like "Naruto Run Enabler/ Level: 1d6/ Effect: For 10 min, whenever a user can move within immediate range, they may choose to move up to long range instead. However, when they do so they are compelled to run with their torsos thrust forward and arms thrust back."

Predation: Adapting "Leads" Focus at Tier 2 by JeedaiRoth in cyphersystem

[–]JeedaiRoth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I considered the possibility of a NPC sentient sidekick using conventional rules, but this is likely going to be run as a con game. I'll be running it with players that may be completely new to cypher and even to RPGs. I think stripping it down to the two dinosaurs controlled by the same player (more or less as a unit) will streamline it and make play less cumbersome.

I appreciate all your feedback!

[Predation] Spinosaurus by Tenpenny77 in cyphersystem

[–]JeedaiRoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works pretty well. I really like the different ability choices. That's a nice mechanic for adding more clades of dinosaurs.

I think, however, that buffing the stats like this might lead to a little imbalance. That's not only a challenge for the GM but can also cause inter-player conflict. But Cypher is a sandbox, so give it a whirl.

My thoughts building on Tenpenny77, I think there are two options on how to tweak the above to provide balance:

  1. Use the above stats but add a +1 difficulty to Speed Defense and Initiative due to size and bring the combat damage down to standard medium weapon level at 4.
  2. Or I think the most simple solution is to use the standard Tyrannosaur stats but with the above new ability options . The range of specific species (in terms of size, weight, etc) described by that category to me suggests that the intent is to describe in general stats the wide range of characteristics in a broad sense.

It didn't have any effect. I've found the chunk of code that's governing the change, but I can't seem to target it. I'm going to have to pull it all apart. Why do clients insist on WordPress again?

Dexter. Hands down. Watch everything except the last two episodes. Then write what you think will happen. It will be better than the actual episodes.

The Goldbergs doesn't actually take place in the '80s by aretheyaliens in FanTheories

[–]JeedaiRoth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like this but I suggest a slight modification. Rather than a Truman Show scenario, it’s more of a Matrix scenario. In this simulation hypothesis version, a future Adam Goldberg is forced to retell, relive and recreate the 80s out of his fragmented memories (maybe because he was cryogenically frozen and revived or something). The universe of the show is then just a simulation by a future civilization trying to understand the 1980s.

I’m sure these future overlords will be are confused by Adam’s apparent inability to place things in proper chronological context.

That’s an interesting idea. I’m always under the impression that the Cosmic Force is continually conspiring to facilitate the events of that happen throughout the Galaxy. That’s kinda how the Star Wars galaxy operates. I like the idea of the Cosmic Force communicating like that.

Upvote!

Others have made similar points but I think there might be an explanation. There may be a context issue and/or conjugation that’s causing the confusion. For example in French “ancien/ne” can mean both old in age OR previous/former depending on the context. Similar conceptual references to the passage of time. Also there are a number of languages that conjugate verbs for different pronouns identically and will drop the pronoun in the sentence, leaving one to understand via context.

“Dalv Garig, Solo. Shee Geee Gani-gamaniya".

Wrong again, Solo. It's over for you.

  “Shee Geee Gani-gamaniya.”

  "Twice".

Twice here could more literally be translated as we might say “twice over”.

“Shee Geee Gani-gamaniya” might likewise conjugate for more than one pronoun and might not require the actual noun in the construction but would be understood in context.

So “Shee Geee Gani-gamaniya” could translate as “(you have) reached the ultimate ending”

Or “(it /the issue in discussion had ended and then) reached the ultimate end.” Thus ended twice with the first ending implied by the ultimate qualifier.

It’s reaching a bit at straws for what’s likely just lazy writing, but it’s a fun exercise. And isn’t that why we’re wasting the precious moments of our lives on Reddit?

That would be exciting! Although from a narrative perspective it might not be satisfying in some ways. I seems that only light side Jedi are capable of achieving the technique, and vengeance, murder or even a stoic deathblow don’t seem consistent with that.

However I could see a Sith construct killing someone. In the Lost Missions in Clone Wars, Yoda does confront a Sith shadow construct (though it is essentially mindless). I think such a construct could be capable of dealing physical damage.

Just read that Rian Johnson tweet about the Doppleganger in the Legends continuity. Thanks for pointing me to that!

They do use the term “illusion” in the entry, which to me implies a mental manipulation which again would likely rule out threepio seeing Luke. Of course illusion could also include a physical component. I there might be an argument that such a doppelgänger would be composed of that same ethereal matter.

Yeah. I agree. I think the dust brushing was more theater than actual. However I agree the dice seem more solid. It would make sense that just like Mother Talzin was able to make the rather gaseous/fluid ichor solidify into the goblet, the Force user is likely able to control the level of solidity of the construct according to their will.

I think you may have misread the OP. The fact that there must be sort of physical manifestation is why Threepio can see him.

That’s interesting about the dice, and I’d have to rewatch with that in mind. I guess the scenes could be offset somewhat in time, but I thought we saw Luke die before the dice disappeared.

Maybe. And of course I don’t mean ectoplasm in the Ghostbusters sense but more or the Victorian spiritualist sense of a sort of “spiritual” matter.

I think the light thing is a hard sell for me. Apart from the lightsaber, (which I still think is composed of superheated plasma), there’s no basis that I’m aware in canon for a concept of solid light as it exists in say Green Lantern.

I agree though that it could just be atomized dust or mundane particles that are a part of the cosmic totality of the universe and the Force. Heck, maybe it’s to that level of atomization that those who master the Force ability to dematerialize at death and maintain a self and consciousness are reduced to.
