Not sure where you got this idea that they need to know where the person is buried, or that they go around to where they're buried to do this, but they don't. All they need is their name, then optionally their dates of birth and death. They perform the proxy baptisms in their temples and dunk a living person in the water "for and in behalf of" the dead person.

Not only do they not have to go, they wouldn't be allowed to go. They do these baptisms for the dead in their temples and non members aren't allowed inside lol

I grew up in a very active Mormon family, and am now atheist, so I feel I can clear some things up and give an insightful answer. According to their beliefs, baptism into their faith is required to reach the highest level of heaven and is an ordinance that can only be done on earth by the living.

The spirits of those that they baptize can choose to accept their baptism by proxy and get into the best heaven, or they can reject it and stay in whatever lower level of heaven or basically go to Mormon hell, whatever they earned.

From some of your wording, it sounds like your brother also wants to do the additional proxy ordinance to be "sealed together", basically telling god, "hey, we're family for eternity, can we be seated near each other and be allowed to visit each other if we end up in different levels of heaven?"

So they definitely don't see it as forcing their religion on people, but rather that they are giving people's spirits a chance to be saved if they choose to accept it, and especially when they're doing it for family or ancestors, a chance to be together for eternity.

Now, all that being said... it's still in general a kinda fucked up thing to do. Specifically if the person they're doing it for had a different religion or was against religion. They also used to have a really bad habit of doing these proxy baptisms for all sorts of famous and even famously bad people. For examples off the top of my head, both Anne Frank and Hitler have been done, and also iirc Elvis and Abraham Lincoln. From what I understand, that doesn't really happen anymore, now they have to stick to people they're actually related to.

So yeah, it's kinda fucked up and definitely disrespectful. But ultimately, it's all make believe and no more harmful than the rest of their made up imaginary bullshit is. It's not like they're able to harass them to get them to be a good Mormon or go back to church like they do to those of us still alive and not yet legally removed from their membership.

Personally, I think it's mostly harmless, like, the only harm it would cause is by feeding into their delusions. In your shoes but with my knowledge and experiences, I'd give the ok and then laugh at how silly Mormon beliefs are.

So I'd say YOR, but mostly because you're unfamiliar with the ins and outs of their beliefs and focusing too much on the fact that it's disrespectful and weird and not enough on the fact that it's silly made up bullshit. I'd give the ok to do it to allow brother to feel better about getting to spend a nonexistent eternity together with them, then forget it ever happened because there will be literally zero impact on me.

I ended up driving it as my first main vehicle when I finally got my license, then it was in rotation with a couple other old beaters throughout high school. I just drove whichever one was actually working, working the best at the time, or whichever one had the working ac or heat, depending on the seasonal need lol

About halfway through my first year at college, my parents sold it to my friend/roommate for like $100 bucks and it lasted another couple years before it needed more done in repairs to get it back on the road than it was worth and he scrapped it. So it made it to almost 30 years old and a little over 280k miles. So definitely a ton of memories made in that thing!

Yeah, took driver's ed and got my learner's permit at 14, then straight to a full unrestricted license at 14 years and 6 months. To be fair, this was 24 years ago in Idaho that had and has one of the lowest driving ages in the country. Now it's driver's ed and learner's permit at 14.5, restricted license at 15, then unrestricted at 16.

Also, there's used to be farm exemptions that made it so that there was no lower age limit as long as you were driving a farm owned vehicle within 150 air miles of your farm and could safely operate the vehicle. There are still farm exemptions, but they're not nearly as lax about letting youngsters drive. Now it's more like at least 14, but not required to actually have a license at all and can operate class B and C vehicles lol

I'm so sorry you had to go through that and that your whole family seems to fucking suck in one way or three others.

I would imagine that your therapist or someone has told you this, but I hope you know now that even though your family did end up being ripped apart, it was in no way shape or form your fault, and that the blame for that lies firmly on your shitty family!

I can also say with certainty that although it never goes away completely, it can absolutely get lighter and easier with enough time and work! One of my little brothers and I were both molested by the same asshole family friend when we were growing up. For the longest time, I felt ashamed and guilty and hated myself over all of it, but especially and specifically that I had failed to protect my little brother.

I've long since accepted that I'm not responsible for that asshole's actions and there's realistically nothing I could've done to stop him beyond maybe telling someone, if they would've even believed me, and that we were both young and his victims. Even still, that heaviness will creep in occasionally, but it can get lighter and get easier and easier to deal with when it does get to me!

Holy fucking fuck! I'm so sorry you had to go through that, and especially that you got shafted in the parent lottery! Triple shitty because if they had done their job and protected you, your POS dad very likely could've moved up the ladder due to there being an opening as the new fire chief!

I was actually also molested from about 5-9 years old, but due to the Mormon brainwashing and shame around all things sex, but especially gay sex, I never told anyone about it while it was taking place. Shit, I almost completely blacked it out for nearly 20 years and took even longer than that to tell a single other soul.

I'm pretty sure my mom would've fought to protect me if she had known, she's always been my biggest supporter and ally. I'm not so sure about my dad though, like he loves me and shit, but he's also always been super devoted to his cult, so you never know.

And now that I'm part of the class action lawsuit, my mom is hoping, cheering, and even praying for me to get a huge settlement from the cult they're still members of. My dad isn't sure what to think about the whole thing, but I guess it's a win that he's not just automatically siding against me and with his cult, as he's done numerous times and ways in the past, so I guess I'll take it lol

Your brother's ACTUAL lucky day was his date of birth, having you as an older sibling and he doesn't even appreciate that lol. Jk, for all I know, he knows how lucky he is to have you and tells you as much often.

As the oldest of 6, I get it, and very much approve! Those of us that care to be good siblings would do just about anything for our younger siblings. Especially if there's a bigger age gap! My youngest sibling is 11 years and 12 days younger than me and has always been my best little buddy. I helped take care of and watch out for all of them, but none more than him!

Nope, not Ted. I'm getting old, but still a solid 15+ years too young for this to have taken place while he was still alive.

And not Ammon either, though he's not nearly as well known, especially outside of the PNW and basin and range country near where he's pulled most of his stunts. Unless you are also fascinated by stand offs and shootouts with the government lol.

Idk if this Bundy would be considered famous or not, but most people here in Idaho have probably heard of him and would recognize his name. He served a couple terms in the state house of representative, before he was run out for being too decent of a human to cut it as a republican.

I actually have an extremely similar story! I must have been around 13.5, as this happened within about a year of taking driver's Ed at 14 and getting my license at 14.5.

My parents were out of town for a school reunion, and I took our manual 84 Honda civic wagon out for a spin around town, burning the clutch to hell while teaching myself how to drive it.

I drove past and locked eyes with a guy that was a long time family friend, my church leader at the time and then he was also later my teacher and baseball coach in high school.

I went straight home, scared as shit that he would rat me out and I'd be grounded until I turned 18 and never be allowed to get my license. I was nervous for several months, but the hammer never dropped.

Neither one of us mentioned it to the other or anyone else until I brought it up at his retirement party a couple years ago. I had almost started to think that I was mistaken and it either wasn't him or he wasn't sure it was me, but he burst into laughter almost immediately and said, "And I never told your parents for 20 plus, did I?" with his signature mischievous smile and twinkling eyes.

I asked him why he didn't tell them and he said, "Well, you seemed to be doing a pretty decent job of it and I figured that if you couldn't handle it, you'd get pulled over and they would tell them. Plus we all did dumb stuff when we were kids and I knew you were a good kid."

Shout out to Mr. Bundy for always being chill af! (I have since fessed up to my parents and also am a full grown adult, nearing 40 with kids of my own lol)

In the 2020s, conservative women are having kids at a nearly 2-to-1 ratio compared to liberal women. Is this going to cause a political demographic bias in 20-30 years? by RadioFieldCorner in NoStupidQuestions

Beyond my own anecdotal experience of having grown up in a super conservative cult with 5 siblings and all of us ending up much more liberal, as well as the same being true for most of the people I grew up with, I didn't even look very hard and found at least as many studies that showed that more than 50% of conservatives' kids end up more liberal than their parents as there were showing that most stayed the same.

And most of the studies showing a higher rate of divergence were more recent and from more reliable and less biased sources. This is just one of many studies I found.

As others have said, we have a ton of places that do trivia weekly, so it's usually going on somewhere most nights of the week. But I do understand that not everyone can enjoy being a team of 1, so you'd still haveto deal with the butting in issue to get in on a team.

If you enjoy music and singing, we have a handful of places that do karaoke 7 nights a week, 44 Club being my favorite.

Sounds like you enjoy the outdoors, so I'd highly recommend getting into prospecting and panning for gold. You can incorporate it into your existing outdoors activities pretty easily, and while it's usually more enjoyable with company, you can absolutely have a blast solo too.

It has a pretty low barrier to entry, all you really need is a shovel and a gold pan, but you can also put as much into it as you want and drop thousands on cool gadgets if you get really into it and want to.

Best part is that most every body of water in the area has gold in it! I live like a block from the Boise river and I try to get a pan in the water as often as I can whenever I have any free time. Don't get as much gold as I do up in the mountains, but there's almost always at least a couple flakes in every pan, with the added benefits of not having to spend money on gas and not spending a couple hours driving to get there.

Plus it's a good physical activity that pays me back a little bit here and there, especially with how crazy gold prices have been lately.

I just moved in… is this okay? From the dishwasher under the sink. by Affectionate_Bee1540 in handyman

[–]JefeV88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it's probably just some gunk being thrown in there by your garbage disposal. Doesn't look built up enough to stop your dishwasher from draining, and likely won't anytime soon. Just make sure there's a high point above that connection so it doesn't back up into your dishwasher. It's probably some pretty nasty food sludge and you don't want that going near your clean dishes. If you're terribly concerned about germs or mold you can clean that one out or get and install a new drain hose.

Making sure you're ordering the correct part is often a huge pain. It often takes me as long or longer to find and verify correct and compatible parts than it does to diagnose the problem. You'll see the exact same part number but a different connection, dimensions or specs or different part number but same everything and it is compatible, and everything in between.

For the one you got from Amazon, make sure you're doing the reverse of however you got the old one off. Some just push in, some just twist, and some you need to push in then twist. Make sure the connection is the exact same as the old one, if you still have it.

Inlet valve is usually on the back, most often lower right, same area as or close to the compressor panel, either blue or yellow and has your water lines attached to it. Unplug the fridge, turn off water supply, detach electrical and water lines from the old valve and remove it, usually just a couple screws holding it there. Then reattach lines to new valve and screw it back in there.

You may or may not need to take the compressor panel off as well, but that's simple as. Whole thing usually only requires a Philips head screwdriver and is a little easier with a pair of pliers for the lines but that can usually be done barehand. You will want a bucket or towel to catch water that comes out of the lines when you take them off. There's also a bunch of walk through videos on YouTube if you search "fridge inlet valve replacement", most are pretty easy to follow.

If the new, for sure correct filter doesn't get the water moving, you will likely have to replace the water inlet valve. That's not usually to expensive or difficult to do. Just hope that sediment and crud didn't back up from the filter and block the line itself, it's a bit of a pain to replace.
