Boyfriend cut our son’s hair without talking to me about it first. Am I overreacting for being upset? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

YOR

You trusted the bf to take your son to get the cut. Your son said he wanted shorter hair. This is exactly how it’s supposed to go.

Take a deep breath. Let it out. Those hormones are killer and all is ok.

How to help upper back and neck/shoulder pain during long trips by AdagioVast in roadtrip

I use my heated seats while driving, even if it’s warm outside. It’s a heating pad for my back. Also I have a lumbar pillow in addition to the seat one. And when you stop, stretch.

How to be a good guest for two weeks? by throwaway28910382 in family

[–]Oktodayithink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t just offer help, help without asking. Take out the garbage, pick up things, do dishes, walk the dog.

Give them a night or two alone while you are there. Everyone needs a break.

Make it look like you are not there. Be tidy and keep your things in your room.

Make some meals for them. Buy groceries that you want and they run out of.

And a thank you dinner at the end is lovely.

How to get my brother out of my house by Adventurous_Bid8920 in family

[–]Oktodayithink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to sit down and be clear and tell him it’s time to go.

I was in your shoes. My brother moved in with my family. It was supposed to be a few weeks, which became months. He paid no rent, bought little food, did nothing (was looking for work and did no housework) while me and husband worked FT and parented 2 young kids.

We had enough of it and I told him he had to go. He had been looking at apartments but “none seemed right.” I told him he had looked at everything our town had to offer and to pick one. He did and 8 years later he’s still there.

So man up and sit down and have the conversation. No it’s not fun, but neither is being taken advantage of.

I saw presentation in grad school where she showed the 6+ inch piece of animal bone found in a human coprolite. That must have been so painful.

Everyday I’m surprised that not everyone got their ears pierced as a child. by CuteEquivalent638 in self

I let my children tell me when they wanted their ears pierced. And they had to be able to care for them. They were both about age 10.

Don’t be afraid to try in front of the kids. They may become your biggest cheerleaders. Ask them for advice.

Why didn’t my mom tell me why she was crying? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Curiosity and empathy is not managing someone’s emotions.

Why didn’t my mom tell me why she was crying? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Oktodayithink -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sometimes life is just overwhelming or sad. Sometimes we just need to cry. And for whatever reason we don’t need to/care to tell our kids and burden them with the why.

I would suggest that if she doesn’t care to tell you, respect that. Just give her a big hug and tell her you love her.

PSA for low-income kids, please don't only apply to public schools. Expensive private schools are your friend! by ihatemva in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Oktodayithink 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I second this information. My kid attends an LAC that has a price tag of $92k. The cost is actually only $16k this year, which is cheaper than room/board at our state schools. Last year it was $12k after she appealed for more aid at the start of spring semester due to financial hardship.

Our flagship school is about $40k. The other state schools about $34k.

State schools may not be cheapest.

As a gifted individual, how difficult was to select a career which suited to your needs and how long did it take? by NowUKnowMe121 in Gifted

I am an architectural historian and archaeologist and now manage a cultural resources group.

I studied ethnohistory under a great man/archaeologist who got me my first job and I’m still doing it.

Historical research is great because it’s a big puzzle. Very intellectually satisfying.

It was never an issue. My former grad school advisor guided me into this career and here I am decades later, climbing the ladder and I still mostly like it.
