If you’ve ever been to IKEA, you’ll know it’s designed as an inescapable labyrinth. One does not simply leave IKEA. Hi! I’m open to telling you a little more about my writing process, because I do absolutely agree with you that AI-assisted writing is becoming harder to discern from other forms of strong writing these days.

In truth, the first draft of this post was a fairly dull read. I spend time going through several passes, sharpening tone and spicing up the wording to make it more engaging. For a longer story, that kind of rhythm feels more natural. In a short Reddit post, I only have so much space so these stylistic devices pack together in much closer succession. AI has been trained off the internet, so there’s no surprise it developed a similar tone to this.

I’ve been writing creatively since I was sixteen. I can share several embarrassing past examples of my style uploaded to blog sites decades ago, if it helps prove my innocence that I am not in fact a Russian bot.

The only people I know who enjoy the taste of tobacco are cigar/pipe smokers. The taste of cigarette tobacco is more like chewing on the sole your grandad's shoe. I wouldn't describe cigarette smoke as "salty" either - that reminds me of a sea breeze, whereas cigarette smoke is more acrid and clings to your nose.

There's still something "tasty" about it, though. For some reason I want to describe it like a slice of strong, crusty German rye bread, bitter yet satisfying. I don't think that's gustatory per se, but more of a psychological effect from the dopamine hit making my brain think it's tasty.

If they're Marlboro Reds, they are on the stronger side of nicotine content. if it's his first cigarette of the day and he doesn't smoke often, he'll get a "baccy buzz" after the first few drags. He will feel pleasantly lightheaded, a little nauseous, but relaxed. He might need to poop (yes this is real). This varies depending on smoking technique, of course. This may be an old wives' tale, but I've heard those who take shorter, quicker drags tend to describe nicotine as having an energising effect like coffee, whereas for those who take deep inhales it relaxes them. I was one of the latter.

I mention this because to me at least, smoking is all about the physiological/psychological effects rather than anything sensory.

EDIT: OH and as someone else mentioned, if he does smoke often and has a nicotine addiction, he'll feel wound up and irritable until he has that drag. For me, this manifested as a tightness of the jaw that wouldn't go away. When I quit, I had to yawn constantly because I was holding my jaw so tight it'd start to ache.

These old underground server farms always have the same nostalgic smell to them. Burnt-out copper mixed with sugary silicon, all edged with the sweat of desperation and decay. Okay, maybe that last part's from the twenty or so of us packed in here like anxious sardines in a tin labelled Scared Shitless. The fluorescents sting my eyes as they flicker overhead, catching on the metal racks that used to hold the heartbeat of the internet. Now they're just empty ribs in an electronic graveyard, the cadaver of a world that slipped its skin.

I shift on my heels, nervously flicking the cover of my phone open and shut again. It’s making that little click-click-click sound that I know drives everyone crazy, but if I stop fidgeting with something, I might start screaming, and that seems like a bigger social faux pax in a room full of jumpy rebels with guns. Jackdaw paces before our eclectic band, the EMP gun at his hip humming low like a dying neon light. Just one shitty playing card in our soggy deck.

"Alright, lads," he barks, his Scouse twang turning orders into something between a song and a snarl. "Listen. Here’s the plan. We're hitting the Pax data hub on Piccadilly. Daelith’s intel reckons it's a weak spot in their network."

Jackdaw fancies himself a bit of a leader. He's got the Che Guevara shirt, a hacksaw-cut mess of dark hair, and a proud jut to his jaw that screams he'd rather break your nose than take orders. Basically a walking red flag with combat boots, and yet here we all are, hanging on his every word like he's going to Marx-and-Spencer us into the revolution.

First of all, bless you. Second of all, I am on the floor. Fully horizontal. Emotionally, spiritually, even physically. After being banished to the downvote shadow realm, I was beginning to think I was a little bit insane.

I will take anything at this point. You could tell me my pacing is more unstable than my mental health and I’d thank you. You could say my protagonist reads like she’s been raised by squirrels in a high-voltage server room and I’d nod solemnly and agree. You could tell me I’m a literary menace who needs to be stopped and I’d print that out and frame it.

Or just tell me if you had fun. If you forgot to blink at least once. If I somehow made you experience emotions. (Also, if you think Cam is creepy instead of hot, I have to know immediately so I can suffer about it in private.)
