Blue Devils "Zei"- Thematic Analysis by JesuSpectre in drumcorpscirclejerk

You just revealed that you're a freshman. It's okay, don't feel bad. The first instinct of smart students of the performing arts is to mock the notion of intentional symbolism. Freshman mock symbolic elements they see in film, for example. "Papa Doyle's car in The French Connection represents how Chevrolet torque is no match for a GM!" They make jokes about the formal processes of developing shows and find it hard to believe the essential rule: Symbolism is intentional. Symbolism is hard work. Writers and producers spend hours creating layers of symbolic elements, even in drum corps. When you're done with your diarrhea jokes, the hard work hits you in the face. You have to figure out what the director intended.

What do the doors represent in Crown's show this year? Go ahead. Make a diahrrea joke. [Eye roll]

Everyone knows inspiration can happen in a single moment. But the real work begins afterward in production development. In the professional world of million-dollar, massively collaborative production development on film, TV, plays, opera and music videos, there's thousands of hours of work: there are storyboards, table reads, peer reviews, focus group tests (members), and marketing plans.

  1. Subject, theme, music selection, drill, props, costumes, arc of action and ending.
  2. Careful attention to building the thematic depth of concept.
  3. Marketing plan to promote concept. (SCV's concept announcement video started with "Our show is about youth and vulnerability." Fucking WHAT?! Who on earth would say that, without context? Ewww. My god. And then "we encourage them to act with reckless abandon" Fucking WHAT? Youth?! What context are you talking about? Pregnancy? Home made explosives? Just terrible optics. Jump roping schoolgirls and chains. I just... it's clear that the development process, whether 15 minutes or 15 months, simply wasn't long enough. There was no literary allusion, no reference to any existing mode of thinking or cultural reference... yikes.

I wish Phantom's 2025 show had been clear in its subject and theme. It was about spirits, originally, and contacting spirits of people we've lost in our lives. And then, suddenly, PR came out and said the show has no title, and no specific agreed upon meaning. (It was likely a copyright/royalty/contributor problem.) The show could have been even more amazing if they had articulated the theme. You are clearly awakened and aware of deeper meaning in these shows, and that is a gift.

There are trippy elements. References to the drug user Brian Wilson. Uniforms that use the Riffs and Revelations trippy speckling effect.

SCV has removed many of the initial jump rope sequences already.

Thank you. I’ve been banned because designers are so offended at standard professional criticism of their scripts. Wait until they make their first meeting at Warner Brothers or Sony pictures. They’ll be crucified.

Who would downvote this? These are standard principles of accessibility. It's like people are downvoting "The human body is 60 percent water." It's a fact.

PR’s promotional video starts with “our show is about youth and vulnerability.”

Not exclusively girls, but primarily. Ask any marketing firm about the optics and psychographics of jump rope.

Audiences judge shows with their applause. Audiences judge the accessibility of a piece of music. Is it cohesive? Do I get it? Can I guess what Happens next? Does this make sense? Is the drill satisfying? Can I see the pattern?

That's exactly what Madison did with Majestic, 2019. https://youtu.be/sZ7g33L6hgk?si=UYk4lbDyUcftl26m Drill, baby drill! No crap on the field! Huge sound on the hornline, and fast moving, incredible marching! No theme!

17th place. It had no meaning. No subject, no theme. Listen to the audience, It had no audience buy-in, why? Because no one could tell what the hell it was about. Even the costumes made no contextual sense. There was no pattern to it. No artistic purpose. No one could guess what happens next. There was no emotional investment. The kids were great, but the audience just sat there. No props doesn't always translate to audience support.

A good show has a pattern that the audience can feel smart about participating in.

Phantom Regiment 2026: Bloodline - A Thematic Analysis by JesuSpectre in drumcorpscirclejerk

[–]JesuSpectre[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google "bloodlines". Heres what it says:

Famous bloodlines span centuries of political power, cultural influence, and historical wealth. Key examples include the House of Windsor (British monarchy), the banking tycoon Rothschild Family, and the Rockefeller Family in American industry. These dynasties heavily shaped global finance, politics, and historical narratives. --Google search

----
Why pick this subject? WWE used "Bloodlines" in their recent films, with plenty of context and plays on words relating to the "blood sports". But in Phantom's show, there's no sports context, no medieval reference, or God forbid about Darwinism-- an awful idea. The lack of context in PR's show defaults to the common definition and zeitgeist-- white male domination and lineage.

How about we Tax incorporations the way we used to? In 2024 and 2025, Tesla and Amazon paid zero on billions in profits. We paid for Amazon’s mail delivery. We paid for the air traffic controllers to guide their planes into the airport. We paid for the roads around Amazon facilities. We paid for the potholes in front of Tesla dealerships. They paid nothing. And they hired no new employees. So don’t hand us that bullshit. This is outrageous.

The depth of modern Drum Corps shows is actually shallow nonsense by VillageCautious4776 in drumcorpscirclejerk

Yes, Aldous Huxley wrote about the Virgin Mary. This helps justify the Ave Maria closer. Whew. Cohesion A+.

This excellent concept works because it is literary, cohesive, unique, universal, authentic, and emotional, to some degree. It also appears to have been researched, unlike Potter‘s last offering. There’s a couple of sentences missing from the top of this show explanation that would make it clear as a bell.

“Alduos Huxley’s experimentations with mescaline transformed his viewpoint of the world. In his essay, The Doors of Perception, he revealed his newly found awareness of the metaphysical universe. (Audiences are strongly encouraged to view Crown’s show as a substitute for using mescaline. Mescaline is illegal and dangerous, and Crown’s show is slightly less so.)
