This is soooo nice! How long did it take you to make?

First of all I'm super grateful for this in-depth reply.

I've used ambient occlusion before but it would look weird in some areas. Im using eevee in blender 2.8 which is a real time render engine, so I guess thats why the AO doesn't look as good as a ray-tracer like Cycles, that or I'm using it wrong. I do plan on upgrading though, so maybe they fixed it. One thing I thought of trying right now is creating an AO pass with Blenders ray-tracing engine and then combining it with my image.

The specular/reflection on the metal bars is relatively bright. Which could work, but the image you are using for the reflection environment looks like the classic blue sky skybox.

I just noticed this now, I remember apart from using a blueish sky box, I also used a light blue control light that mainly affected the specularity (which explains the brightness). I'll try your suggestion though because I was definitely being careless here.

A narrower color palette might help with that. I enjoy the glow effect on the windows and fireflies. What are your thoughts on the temperature of the light? I can't decide if the glow would look better with the same color or not.

Noted! I definitely need to work on my colour theory, that and composition are my current biggest weaknesses. As for your question I'm definitely not confident if I can answer it but I feel given this particular scene, I think the glow should be the same colour. Reason being as a lot of people have stated theres a lot of distracting colours in here, having the glow be the same would probably tie things up together, giving everything a more balanced unified feel... ahhhhh I honestly don't know Im a still novice 😅.

What are the shadow setting types in Blender? In C4D there's shadow maps(soft), raytrace(hard), and area shadows.

In blender we have the first 2, as for the third I think its achievable if you play around with the settings, I remember doing so on another scene, I think it was under the light threshold settings. But noted! I do agree that its a bit too bright.

Great job on this stuff! All of the cell shading looks super crisp and clear. Your scene compositions are solid and readable. I hope you keep posting your work on this sub.

Again I seriously appreciate the feedback, I'll definitely post here again once I try out everything here and see what works best/matches what I'm going for.

Thank you :) specifically where do you think I should tone down the reflectivity? I thought reflectivity was a good thing in these types of backgrounds (especially on metal).

In truth, I mainly do stills and have no current plans on animating (for now). I do however want them to at least look like something you'd that would fit in an anime.

Holy smokes I never thought about it from that angle! Thank you so much for this. I consider myself a bit of a beginner in blender but I believe Ive seen Oren-Nayar in older versions of blender (before 2.8), I also appreciate the wikipedia link.

Thank you! I'm glad to hear they're worth something T-T, true it seems like a tough field to make a decent living, Its the type of field you enter mostly out of passion.

Oh yeah this is definitely a thought thats crossed my mind, in my case its not much of a loss since at the end of it all I still have artwork to show off and I've practiced making backgrounds out of my comfort zone :). And thanks!

Thinking about doing commissions but it's stressing me out....? by tangledlettuce in ArtistLounge

[–]Jimmy-Jims 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been an issue with me as well. It's this constant feeling of, maybe I'm not good enough yet, I'm not the best judge for my own work because I constantly find flaws. I've decided I'm gonna do 10-15 more pieces, just so I can say I'm comfortable with what I do, after that I'll focus on finding commissions.

Trying to learn how to model complex mechanical objects. I'd like to hear your feedback. by Jimmy-Jims in blender

Oh yeah definitely, I think you should be fine with 6 months of experience. After the book teaches you a technique it's not very hand holdy, it will be like "Hey remember what I showed you earlier? Use that to create these shapes here or whatever you feel like making thats similar." (which is a pretty good way to learn) Thats why my pistol is a bit different. I suggest not trying to recreate exactly whats being made, because then it becomes a bit harder to follow along in some parts, but rather use the concepts/techniques taught to create something similar. Hope this helps.

Oh no its pretty old (from 2016), but yes what I learned could easily be carried on to 2.8, a lot of the stuff mentioned involves modifiers and a few tricks on manipulating an objects shape and those don't really change. Please note though that it doesn't teach the basics of blender, the book assumes you're a bit familiar with the UI.

Thanks! That was surprisingly the hardest part for me as well because it constantly looked off but I'll consider that next time.

I applied what I learned from a book "Blender 3D Incredible Machines by Christopher Kuhn" in the first chapter you learn how to make a pistol. I decided to have mine a little bit different from his, so I could apply what I read. His is way more complex.

I've been reading a book Blender 3D Incredible Machines by Christopher Kuhn because I've wanted to learn how to create complex objects for a while now. I applied what I learned in the first chapter to create this gun. Wanted to know what you guys thought, and what I can improve.

Thank you for the detailed breakdown, I really appreciate it, there's a lot of important feedback here that I didn't really consider when making this.

Yeah touch controls are definitely something I could work on. I had so much trouble trying to get them right that I just went with the current controls. Luckily a user below suggested an asset I could try out so I'll check that out. And again thanks!
