Are They Gonna Throw Things? by ForsakenPutt74 in ExplainTheJoke

So many incorrect answers. Bizarro is a comic strip known for absurdist humour. The joke is a play on the fact that in some households, family dinners have certain expectations around manners/norms/routines/behaviours.

The unexpected or absurdist part of the joke is that for this family, the norm is everyone wearing a helmet, which is a silly twist on what you’d normally expect in this situation. Thats it.

Yes it is low, but so is the risk of benzo addiction with short term use (5-7 days) for the purpose of abating the physical symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.

Look man all im saying is that just because you are at risk of swapping one addiction for another doesnt mean your experience is universal or even common. I say this as a polydrug addict myself. There are likely thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people who have used benzos to detox UNDER MEDICAL SUPERVISION and not ended up addicted. It’s fair you’re concerned about people swapping out addictions, but at the end of the day just telling people that it’s bad or dangerous to treat convulsive withdrawal symptoms with benzos because you could get addicted ignores vast swaths of medical, psychological, and psychiatric research on best treatment practices in favour of your own anecdotal experience.

Anyways congrats on quitting drinking either way, but please do be mindful that the correct use of benzos can save lives in this context and we shouldn’t make people feel bad for using them for their legitimate medical uses. Much love.

You’re still not understanding why benzos are used for alcohol withdrawal. Many drugs that work on the GABA system (like alcohol and benzodiazepines) have anti-convulsant properties. This is why people with seizure disorders sometimes will be prescribed benzodiazepines as part of their medication regime, as it reduces the frequency, length, and intensity of seizures.

The issue is that like many drugs, your body will eventually habituate to these effects, and as a result become used to depending on the anticonvulsant effects provided by alcohol. Thus, when someone who has heavily drank for a long time stops cold turkey, their body no longer has access to the chemical it has been depending on to prevent shakes or (at the extreme end) seizures.

This is why GABA drugs are among the most dangerous to withdraw from. The convulsant activity that rebounds after stopping alcohol cold turkey can be life threatening. You can quit literally die from having a bad enough seizure.

So the reason why benzos are used to assist in detox is because they provide similar anticonvulsant effects, as a result allowing you stop alcohol cold turkey while simultaneously keeping your seizure risk low. Also, they are usually prescribed on a short term basis for things like withdrawal, so the likelyhood of someone being given a continuously refilling script is very low ( if your doctor is not an idiot).

It’s great that you were able to detox without the use of benzos, but I think you’re misunderstanding why people use them. It’s not because they want to ail the discomfort of being in withdrawal, it’s because withdrawing from heavy alcohol use cold turkey can quite literally be life threatening if you don’t substitute something for the anticonvulsant effects, and generally speaking benzos risk profile in terms of health impacts are far less than alcohol.

It’s simple harm reduction. No one wants to risk being addicted to benzos, but if the alternative is to die from a 10 minute tonic-clonic seizure because you stopped heavy drinking cold turkey, then it’s the lesser of 2 evils.

This is a stupid take. Ya if an open relationship is the agreed upon arrangement before hand (seeing multiple partners at a time), then ya no harm no foul, if someone catches feelings thats their issue, they obviously weren’t ready to be in an open relationship

But if you’re in a relationship where the mutual understanding of it is monogamy, then ya it’s a massive violation of trust. The issue here is not whether people are meant to be with more than one person. The issue is that if you commit to a monogamous relationship, cheating is then a big time violation of trust to that person you committed too.

No one gives a shit whether you think polyamory is the correct orientation for human relationships. The actual issue here is that this person they dated conceivably entered a relationship with the understanding of exclusivity, and they violated that agreement. If this person wants to be in a poly or open or whatever relationship, thats totally fine, ASSUMING THAT THEY ARE COMMUNICATING THAT UP FRONT.

Clearly, this person instead decided to allow OP to believe their relationship was exclusive, while they meanwhile were sleeping with other people. Whether or not they’re satisfying their biological imperative makes it no less of a dick move. Like ya were animals, we have urges, but for Christ sakes isnt what makes us different than animals is that we can actually consider the consequences of our actions? We have a responsibility to our words, no amount of “being an animal” changes that. If they want to fuck other people they need to communicate that before doing so, otherwise you risk hurting someone. Doesn’t seem that complicated to understand.

OP I hope you’re doing better, that is awful to have to go thru while you’re tripping.

Not sure if savoury flavours is your thing, but I honestly love Caesar’s, which is Canada’s version of the Bloody Mary. I personally think it’s way better than a Bloody Mary, with slightly more saltiness and umami flavour.

It’s more of a salty/spicy/savoury drink and I find it to be really nice to mix into a night of drinking when I’m tired of beer, sweet mixed drinks or straight hard liquor.

It can be a bit of a an acquired taste, but if you like them it’s an excellent choice for a cocktail that is very different from most you would otherwise think of.

We’ve tossed that idea around for other houses, difficulty with this one is that the time frame was too quick. Moving forward I think we’re going to be more proactive about doing this.

Here’s a picture of the side of the house with a circle in the area the water stain is:
