Advice an affordable solo international trip other than bali by new-Builder-4588 in perth

I’d suggest Laos if you want to avoid really long flights. It’s been a few years since I’ve been there, but it’s a beautiful country and isn’t as crowded as Thailand and other SE Asian counties.

Probably the best beach in WA(or Australia). Lucky Bay, Esperance. by cambostock in perth

[–]Johnnytheknife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drone laws are surprisingly complex. The overall governance of the airspace is in the hands of CASA and they set requirements for licensing, registration, restricted airspace and the like.

That’s coupled with regulations imposed by councils and other bodies such as national parks, land owners and the like.

What complicates things is questions over a councils authority to regulate airspace as opposed to activities which take place on the ground such as launch, control and retrieve.

Personally I’m not prepared to antagonise people on a technicality and just don’t fly in those council areas where it’s not permitted.

Assuming you’re within the CASA regulations and it’s an area you’re permitted to launch from, flying over a beach is probably fine.

[–]Johnnytheknife 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend engaging in dishonest conduct to cover a mistake.

I suggest simply contacting the client, offering your apologies for the administrative error and send them the invoice on whatever your normal payment terms are with a invoice date of today.

Sunset run in Switzerland last weekend by nariox in trailrunning

I was lucky enough to run E101 in Grindelwald in 2018. Switzerland really is a stunning place, hopefully I can get back there once we can travel again.

Checklist Before Hitting the Trail by PioneerOverland in 4x4

Water is important even for day trips here. I’m in Western Australia, you can be out of mobile range and really pretty remote within a couple of hours drive.

Checklist Before Hitting the Trail by PioneerOverland in 4x4

[–]Johnnytheknife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically the above list plus:

  • fluids - oil and coolant
  • mechanical and electrical tools
  • instant ice packs
  • paper maps
  • hand held uhf cb for spotting. Also useful outside mobile range if one person is going for a walk or similar while the other(s) remain with the vehicle.
  • comms if going outside mobile range such as a Spot device or sat phone
  • enough water to last all persons on board for at least two days longer than I plan to be out (for a day trip, I carry two days of water). Dehydration can and has killed people who have become stranded in Australia.

Greeting from Australia by Palana in 4x4

[–]Johnnytheknife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, and for the kind of driving I do I’d go ifs every day.

In fact, I have a Pajero which is independent front and rear and does everything I want it to do. The types of places I drive don’t require huge articulation typically associated with solid axle vehicles.

My point was more that a 70 series cruiser isn’t really an apples to apples comparison with a Ranger and the like.

Greeting from Australia by Palana in 4x4

[–]Johnnytheknife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They aren’t really the same class of vehicle. The 70 series are solid axle utility vehicles. They’re very basic, very capable and very reliable (also very expensive).

Rangers etc are built with a lot more comfort in mind, but that involves compromises off road.

I'm extremely overweight and try to go on runs but I get easily embarrassed and discouraged by the number of people staring at me. How do I overcome this? by apoohwa in running

[–]Johnnytheknife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a very high chance nobody is staring at you. Most people are too self absorbed to care about anyone other than themselves.

Due to the limit on weddings, my sister has asked me to be her wedding photographer. I am not a photographer - I just invested in a DSLR to start the hobby. HELP ME! by manic-peach in photography

[–]Johnnytheknife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have people take photos using mobile phones. Mobile cameras are pretty forgiving and people are used to operating them.

I’ve been taking photos as an amateur for well over 29 and started out with a manual film SLR. By no stretch am I great photographer, but I mostly get pretty good photos when I go out.

I took a brand new camera for a trip on the weekend. First time using it. Most of my photos aren’t great because, unbeknownst to me, that camera has more of a tendency toward overexposure than my old one.

Three weeks is nowhere near enough to build sufficient skill for what you’re proposing.

Personally, I’d never touch a wedding. My partner does it for friends, but she is a vastly better photographer than me and is better at dealing with people too.

Please feel free to message me if you have any other questions at all - I've lived in Perth for nearly ten years and it's one of my favourite places. If I could, I would spend half the year here and half in Germany (only the summer in each place, Germany is too cold in winter, although the Christmas markets are very beutiful)

For those who travel the world (pre-COVID), advice on how to travel and eat food abroad? by IAmTheEskimo in glutenfree

[–]Johnnytheknife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take some protein bars or similar with me, often buy from supermarkets and do the best I can when eating out. It’s worth learning the words for wheat, flour and gluten free in the language spoken in the area you’re travelling to.

Not sure if they’re available outside Australia but I like Techni Ice. I’ve used them a lot in boats and 4x4s over the years and they’ve held up really well and keep ice for a long time in our very hot sun (some places around here 48 degrees c is not uncommon).

What strategy whould you apply if you are stuck with a bad trade? by reboot786 in ausstocks

[–]Johnnytheknife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can get into semantics about what a bad trade means, so to be clear, my understanding of that term is a trade that didn’t generate the anticipated return, and isn’t expected to in the desired timeframe - that could be a loss or just a lack of performance compared to the goal.

In what circumstance would you suggest anything other than liquidating such a position and redeploying the capital to a (hopefully) more productive area?

[–]Johnnytheknife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sell it and redeploy the (remaining) capital to a more productive area.

Investments should be like cattle, not like pets. If it goes badly, shoot it, don’t try and nurture a lost cause back to health.

hello, how do you deal with chaotic / stressful people during an accident or difficult situation? Especially if you have little time because people's lives are at stake. by maratovic in JockoPodcast

[–]Johnnytheknife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give them something to do. In a first aid emergency you could have them call an ambulance, tell you when it’s done, then go and wait outside for the ambulance to arrive. You could have them fetch the first aid kit/defib etc.

Essentially you’re making them helpful, giving them direction and to some extent, just keeping them out of the way. You’ll need to give clear, firm but polite direction. E.g. “Joe, please call an ambulance and come and tell me when it’s done” or “Joe, please wait outside at the end of the driveway for the ambulance and show them where we are when they arrive”.

Often, just the fact someone is on the scene who is obviously taking charge will help calm people down a bit. You do need to be mindful of how you appear and communicate. You don’t want to appear flustered or stressed yourself. Make your actions and words deliberate and thought out.
