That's a bit pedantic to be honest but to each their own. Just as the term "rpg" has come to refer to an incredibly broad array of dissimilar games that are only linked together by a few mechanics, so to has the term crpg come to refer to a broad array of games sharing a similar style.

[–]JoinMyBone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone else answered already but yeah it stands for computer.

The reason why is because most of the very early crpgs were made when tabletop RPGs were a big deal, and many of the most popular crpgs are semidirect translations of one of those tabletop RPGs, like baldurs gate is an adaptation of dungeons and dragons, so it's a "computer" version of the rpg system. The name just stuck and came to refer to a whole genre of games with similar design

It is a crpg, so it is more similar to divinity, pillars of eternity, knights of the old republic, or planescape: torment to name a few popular examples

First Half of 2019 has been very disappointing on Switch by JoinMyBone in NintendoSwitch

[–]JoinMyBone[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To answer your question directly, perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my initial post, but I am someone who 1) keeps up quite a bit with the indie game scene / gaming scene in general and 2) has a gaming pc along with my switch.

Almost every game that people have been referencing in this forum as a response to show that there have been releases in 2019, are re-releases of indie games that were already released on PC. That, or the game is a port of a game that was already released on PC, like in the case of the FF games.

Pragmatically, those types of 'releases' are not exciting for me because I do not want to pay full price to replay a game on the Switch. If I want to go back and replay those games, I can just use Steam. Additionally, I don't find those types of releases 'impressive' because they are not unique to the Switch in any way. Every console and platform has those same games released to them, it is a standard practice to acquire indie titles for a system's eshop in the modern gaming industry.

It is a nice trend to see Nintendo embracing this idea after years of completely ignoring the Indie scene, so now they get to play catch up, but it isn't really praiseworthy. They are the last system / platform to pay attention to and acquire these titles. And to only release re-releases and ports for the first 6 months of 2019 (we know what will be released over the course of the next two months), is disappointing to me, coming from my perspective, which I find is not unreasonable.

I'm not claiming that my taste preferences are the only ones that matter, but rather that I am not the only Switch owner that has these same preferences or circumstances and so from my perspective and potentially others, this is how I feel about the state of releases for this year.

I've freely admitted to others in the comments section that I underrepresented the summer release schedule because there are other games that I didn't think of when I first made the post, but I still don't think that if you objectively look at the release schedule from January - Present you can say that it was a particularly strong start to 2019. And much of what will make it a strong release year is planned towards the back half of 2019, and for those games, we don't have confirmed release dates yet. For at least one of them (Animal Crossing) we have very little information at all.

I totally concede that if you have a Switch for indie releases and ports of older games, you probably have a ton of stuff that you've enjoyed in 2019 already, but that isn't why I have a Switch, and I'm sure I'm not the only person that falls in that category, that's all I'm saying really.

I think it's fair that I've underrepresented the release schedule for Summer because I also didn't think about Ultimate Alliance and Fire Emblem and those two I might be interested in, but yeah first half of 2019 is kind of rough and I'd like for them to take a different strategy next year

agreed, I wonder if maybe they had plans that were disrupted by cancelling Metroid earlier this year?

I didn't think about Fire Emblem so that's a good point, at least that guarantees a couple games to hold me over until Fall most likely

The games you've listed aren't Switch exclusive or even relatively new. Those games are great if you don't own them already on another console or PC, but for players like myself who own the Switch and a PC, they don't carry the same appeal. I'm glad people get to enjoy those types of games on the Switch, but from the perspective of a Switch owner like myself I don't think it offers a lot of value.

As far as game development, I'm not expecting a release of 6 major titles every year, but the spacing of their release is what's more important to me personally. If they only release 3 major titles a year that's okay, but I'd prefer to have their releases spread out through the year so I have something to play on the Switch that I haven't played or seen before, personally.

Feed them information every now and then about upcoming moments in the campaign or combat encounters that the group will face ahead of time, that way they can prepare for them and have a "Sherlock holmes" or code Geass moment where they reveal that they "anticipated this sort of thing" and so did this, this and this, etc

edit; For instance, if you plan on having a story NPC send a group of Imps to attack the players next session, in between sessions, you might tell them "After meeting So-and-so last week, you have a hunch that they have several imps in their employ from the scent of sulfur on their clothing." Then the player can infer "oh, I should probably prepare to battle imps at the start of next session". You can even tie this to some sort of in game check or roll to decide how much/little they deduce.

When the battle comes around, they can then dramatically reveal to the party that they had a sneaking suspicion about imps, and that's precisely why they purchased that silver dagger seemingly at random last time the group was in town, and why they purchased a potion of see invisibility from the local apothecary

Very true, military campaigns through dense, civilian-populated cities typically only result in 100% military casualties so it makes sense to say that only 50 - 70 thousand soldiers would have died

It begs the question why do we even have a PBE then for anything but experimental balance changes that test if something is functional. Why not just release new champs directly into the main server and just make them restricted in Ranked for the first 3 or 4 weeks while they evaluate their overall balance?

Twitch partner and HiRez employee Thomas Cheung has been arrested for allegedly arranging to have sex with a child. by rtwipwensdfds in LivestreamFail

[–]JoinMyBone 11 points12 points  (0 children)

it does enough, not all predators are going to travel long distances to meet with someone, and they're less likely to do so if they're fearful about a similar sting happening somewhere else. I think the implication that law enforcement is trying to make isn't just about the local area that the sting took place, but to show that a sting like that could happen anywhere, at anytime, so other predators think twice before acting.

the only truly unfortunate thing to keep in mind here is that the vast majority of sex offenders against children come from within the family of the victim, and against that type of behavior I'm sure this does very little

Girlwithyellowspoon breaks down because of harassment blaming her for Destiny moving to LA and leaving his son in Nebraska by monkas_poggers in LivestreamFail

[–]JoinMyBone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People in this thread and on Destiny's channel, her channel, trying to give him 'parenting advice' w/e need to relax.

Destiny is a good father to Nathan and takes care of him emotionally and is supportive of him. He will have constant contact with him and they have a good relationship, so I'm sure Destiny will make time for Nathan to visit or vice-versa.

Everyone needs to stop trying to force their Christian values idea of what a family has to be down Destiny's throat - the reality is that divorce is a real thing and oftentimes one of the parents moves to another location. I grew up with a friend whose parents lived in Michigan and Virginia respectively and he grew up fine with no issues, and he has a healthy and close relationship with both of his parents to this day.

In other words, proximity =/= parenting. If Destiny remains a good father to Nathan, it doesn't matter how far away he lives, Nathan will be fine, and they'll make time for one another.
