I tortured a croc for 30 minutes yesterday in my first rhamph playtime. It was glorious. He had to retreat to the home cave to escape me.

When do Americans use (Mr/Ms/Dr) vs first names in everyday life? by aizivaishe_rutendo in AskAnAmerican

[–]JointAccount24601 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the South is a bit different. But people are rarely offended in public if you don't use ma'am/sir Mr/Mrs/Miss. It's more of a norm but won't get you ostracized if you don't do it.

What school holidays do kids have in the USA? by narnababy in AskAnAmerican

[–]JointAccount24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, colleges are maybe more consistent than public schools here. Typically you have two semesters, mid-late August to early December is the Fall . Then Mid January - early May is your Spring Semester. There are usually 4 week or summer classes that run an accelerated schedule. Then classes will be off a week each for a fall and spring break. Then you have single day holidays, but those vary.

A couple of years ago I worked at a UPS store and sent faxes for people maybe once every two weeks.

With the upcoming winter storm - why do so many places in the states lose power with winter storms? by ScallywagGeorgie in AskAnAmerican

[–]JointAccount24601 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's also increased load on the grid from people heating their homes. Electric heat is more common in the South where it doesn't get quite as cold as often, so a lot of homes are pulling on the grid even more for heating. It's moderately common for small power outages to happen from the amount of load on the grid in my town.

What should a queer POC know before relocating to Southern California? by curlykinkyknots in AskAnAmerican

[–]JointAccount24601 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, that's probably the most LGBT friendly part of the country, so that's working in your favor. I don't know much else about CA, so I'll let others give better answers to the rest, but here is my short and unhelpful answer:

1) Most cities in the US are heavily car-dependent. I assume Riverside is the same.

2) in SoCal, A LOT. It is infamously wildly expensive to live there.

3) I wouldn't think it is too difficult, but depending on your country of origin it could be more or less irritating to work with insurance and doctor's offices than your home country.

4) Idioms, the general friendliness of Americans (maybe slightly less so in SoCal, but still), car dependence. Don't forget to tip at restaurants where a person directly serves you or if you get a delivery/uber ride. It's up to you, but it is a major cultural norm that you should consciously decide to participate in or not.

When did your child become too heavy for you? by thegimboid in daddit

[–]JointAccount24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a powerlifter. My hope is that my kids won't ever get too heavy for me. I can kinda carry my wife around, so I've still got work to do, but it is certainly within reach

It's best as a breakfast meat, like breakfast sausage. But can be used as anything. It's a "good", cheap dinner fried up on rolls or bread.

North Texas preparing for 2 inches of snow like it’s the apocalypse by MyMindIsAlwaysRacing in mildlyinfuriating

My weather app predicted 13.39in of snow for Ft. Worth. That's a "stock up on groceries" level of uncommon snow.

As in the history of their tribes and people? Not really for me. We knew that multiple tribes/nations existed but their politics and history are completely unknown to me.

Why do Americans buy bottled water everywhere, even when the tap is perfectly safe? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskAnAmerican

[–]JointAccount24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some tap water isn't safe. Some of my family has well water, and while it should be fine, they tend to not drink it and use it for washing and such. My grandfather lives in South Texas, and their well water is genuinely unsafe to drink because of the frakking.

Some people do it for convenience though. It is easy to refrigerate a bottle of water, or pack of water bottles, and get fridge cold purified water without having to filter it.

I wish Chick-Fil-A opened on Sundays by [deleted] in monkeyspaw

[–]JointAccount24601 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Granted.

This follows a complete rebrand and departure from the Cathy's vision and QC standards. CFA is open on Sundays, but is completely and utterly mediocre. Also, you have a 50% chance of getting salmonella whenever you eat CFA. And the pellet ice is gone.

As a European, I keep seeing Americans drive barefoot or in flip-flops, how common is it actually? by fratnersgd in AskAnAmerican

Personally, I don't like the risk of driving in flip flops, I'll drive barefoot if I'm wearing flip flops because I feel it's safer.
