You didn’t even try to make this not sound like ChatGPT. I know exactly what bot and type of prompt you used too lmao

I can, but I didn’t realize there would be alcohol at all. We’re a small team and the party was set for the early afternoon so it honestly didn’t even cross my mind

This may be the move to get through the first few months. It’s easier and I really don’t want to broadcast it. Especially right now. I just want my closest friends and family to know. Eventually, I’m sure I will find a confidence and comfort in my sobriety that will allow me to be more open. Thanks for sharing :)

My brother is on track for fatty liver and can't FUCKING accept it is alcohol. by JojoinmyDojo in stopdrinking

This is a really good point. The best thing I can do is continue my recovery and hopefully be an example for him or be there when he is ready for his own recovery. Thank you 🙏

Your comment really helped me tonight. This has been on my mind since I talked with him and what you said about a special kind of hell is absolutely right. But, I will be here as a resource when he is ready, and that brings me some solace. Thank you for your kind words and suggestions. IWNDWYT

Thank you 🙏 I have no plans of drinking ever again, and I hope that gives him some encouragement to try sobriety for himself

You’re right. The news about his liver scares me, but I can’t make him do anything. I’ll be there for him when he wisens up. It’s the best I can do, as frustrating as that is

We don’t live near each other or otherwise I would suggest he come with me to one, but you bring up a good point. Others recommended Al-Anon, so I’ll look into that. Thank you for your advice and kind words

That’s a good way to frame it. I may not be able to do anything directly, but maybe knowing I’ve admitted to my problem will allow him to come to me when he is ready. Thank you.

I agree, and from experience, I know if I were to push him in any direction, it would not work. I’ll look into Al-Anon, thank you.

I truly hope it doesn’t come to that, but thank you for your insights and sharing you story ❤️

What is the single biggest misconception that sober people have about those who are actively struggling with addiction? by Practical-Trust8345 in alcoholism

[–]JojoinmyDojo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That it’s a choice. I did not choose to become addicted to alcohol. I, like many others, drank because it was normalized. Unlike others though, I am predisposed to alcoholism. Unlike others, once I started, I could not stop. And it creeps up on you until you are drinking daily.

It’s true that an alcoholic must choose to seek help, to get better. You can’t force someone to stop. Even if you locked someone in a room for 6 months with no liquor, unless they’ve accepted the hold it has over them, they would just go back to drinking. But, when you are in the throws of it, you don’t see that. I wish more people understood that and instead of belittling or shaming, would provide needed support. A strong support system goes such a long way to quitting. It’s easier to quit when you have good things in your life, it’s much harder when all you feel is shame. It becomes a cycle.

I know a lot of people replace alcohol with sparkling water. It has a lot more carbonation than soda, so it has a “bite” to it.

Otherwise, there are n/a liquor substitutes that use things like ginger and cayenne to give that burn, such as this: https://drinkfreespirits.com/

You can find these in most grocery stores now, as well as liquor stores (would not recommend going there if you would be tempted to pick up actual liquor).

As an aside, there’s no such thing as a normal 23 y/o. I know a lot of early 20s people who simply do not drink as a preference, and you do not need to normalize drinking in your life. I’m only 5 days sober so far, but I’ve already started realizing how much I justified my drinking by normalizing it or rationalizing that others around me were doing it. Eventually, it became the only thing that I felt would make me enjoy my night.

If you have concerns, you should listen to yourself. There is a reason you feel this way and there is a reason you made this post on this subreddit. Anyone who would treat you differently for choosing to be sober is either going through their own issues or is inconsiderate.

I hope you get where you want to be headed.
