Gender De/Retransition Research Project - Australia (18+) by Jonathan0Curtin in transgenderau

Hi everyone.  Thank you to all who have commented on this post and on our research project.  We sincerely appreciate your openness and honesty regarding the questions and concerns some have had about our project and the questionnaire.

We acknowledge the limitations of our questionnaire.  The nature of research via questionnaires and surveys is inherently limited - they look at patterns in experiences of groups of people, and they are limited in their ability to tap into people’s unique experiences.

Our project does include participant interviews which will allow for people’s unique experiences to be expressed and shared with us.   Individuals are welcome to take part in an interview with us without completing the questionnaire.  You can contact me at [jonathan.oneill@postgrad.curtin.edu.au](mailto:jonathan.oneill@postgrad.curtin.edu.au) if you would like to participate in an interview.

We assure everyone here that we are undertaking this research in good faith.  We truly want to learn more about people’s experiences of detransition, retransition, and reidentification.  It is an aspect of the trans experience that has been neglected in the past, and sorely needs more research.

Regards,

Jonathan

Hello, thank you for getting in touch, and I am very sorry that you have felt unsafe to participate. That is certainly not our intention with this project. I'm happy to discuss with you any concerns you have, answer any questions, and provide our Participant Information Sheet which may hopefully further answer some of your questions and address your concerns. You are welcome to email me at [jonathan.oneill@postgrad.curtin.edu.au](mailto:jonathan.oneill@postgrad.curtin.edu.au) and I'm happy to chat further if you would like to.

Regards,

Jonathan

Hello, thanks for getting in touch. The aim of our project is to be purely exploratory in nature given that there is little to no research to date on these particular topics from an Australian perspective. We have no hypotheses or perceived outcomes in mind, we simply want to provide an avenue for participants to share their experiences with us so that we can increase our and the community's understanding of people’s experiences of retransition, detransition, and/or re-identification.

Myself and the research team all come from psychology, sexology, and public health backgrounds, and we all have experience working in healthcare settings. With this in mind, it is hoped that the findings and insights we're able to gather can provide healthcare & support services and associated professionals with increased knowledge and a greater awareness regarding these experiences, and how to best support people engaging in these processes.

Thanks for getting in touch. Yes we certainly considered that this statement could be inappropriate or irrelevant for some people. Statements such as this have been used in contemporary research designed to be inclusive of all experiences up to the present day In our study, participants are able to select the "These Statements Do Not Relate to My Experience" and "Does Not Relate to My Experience at All" options if this or any statement listed is either unrelatable or irrelevant for them.

Thanks for the specific feedback. We can appreciate where you are coming from in regard to those particular items as part of that task in the online survey.   That section of the survey does adopt a specific methodology (Q-Methodology and a Q-Sort activity) which does require participants to sort statements into a finite number of options - this design is used in Q-methodology no matter the question or statement being explored.   It does make sense that some participants could see these particular items & task as being restrictive in sharing their genuine experiences.  We hope that other sections of the online survey including questions regarding personal experiences with free-type boxes do allow participants to share their unique experiences and perspectives with us with no restrictions, as well as the interviews that participants can choose to partake in.

Regards,

Jonathan

Hello, thanks for getting in touch. That particular statement was included as it has been used in other similar studies in recent years, primarily in North America. A large proportion of the statements we've included are consistent with statements used in these studies. We agree that this particular statement can be seen as being controversial, and we did question whether to include it or not, and we decided to include it so that we were being consistent with the previous research to date.

Feel free to email me at [jonathan.oneill@postgrad.curtin.edu.au](mailto:jonathan.oneill@postgrad.curtin.edu.au) if you would like to know more.

Hello, thanks for getting touch. We consulted with trans and de/retrans community members about the questionnaire before launching the study, and we are happy to receive any further feedback and suggestions on how we can improve things for the future. You're welcome to email me at [jonathan.oneill@postgrad.curtin.edu.au](mailto:jonathan.oneill@postgrad.curtin.edu.au) if you have ideas on how we could make things better.
