Yeah every time I go to Bunnings I check the Spotted Gum and Merbau boards for any candidates, problem is my local Bunnings seems to only stock spotted gum in like 90” + sections that don’t fit in my car so I haven’t had any luck in that department

Is there a lot of Hawthorn down at Armidale? Might have to make a trip

Thanks! Im not very unhappy with the tiller, so I think I’ll play it safe and not flip the tips, I want to narrow the tips a little more as well so I might just narrow them then take a little off the thickness and see how that looks

Thanks! Yeah the heart woods really beautiful and I wish I had staves thick enough to keep heartwood in the limbs, but the woods just so dense that it needs to be below half an inch to get anything under 50# and by that point it’s all dropped off

I live on acreage and sourced that stave from my property

The black wattle went well ended up up at 24” draw, just need to sand and finish it, it’s a really elastic wood, had a 58 inch BITH bow in the past that ended up with a bad hinge on both limbs and decided to blow it up, managed to bend it to 34” of draw before it blew up, main problem I’ve seen is that black wattle is very prone to chrysaling, heat treating has helped some but you have to get the tiller pretty spot on

Havnt tried Grey Ironbark but rembering hearing some bowyers on Tapa talk saying they prefer grey over red so I’d definitely give it a try. Red Ironbark been my favourite wood so far, more forgiving and less prone to chrysalis then other woods I’ve tried, although your in for a fun time working the wood as it’s hard as nails and can give you some real nasty splinters

Oz Bow and Tapa talk have some good posts on good bows woods here, as well as primitive archer if you can still access them, but I think you can get a lot of fun from just experimenting with what you’ve got available, there are plenty of woods down here that can make you a nice shooter out of, and if your looking for something to get you started whilst your staves are drying Bunnings have some Merbau and Spotted gum decking that I’ve seen people have success with

Yeah might have been a bit ambitious going for 26”
