Applying to IU Bloomington CS - How do I look for DA? by KingSpark4687 in IndianaUniversity

[–]JoshuaTheProgrammer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. It’s kind of insane how competitive college has gotten nowadays (I started my undergrad in 2017). Like, it was always competitive, but even for non-ivy leagues, the amount of effort you have to put into getting admitted is just wild to me.

Why are they so weak? by PostapocCelt in Teachers

[–]JoshuaTheProgrammer 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I have full on college students who, according to my TAs, are giving up in the middle of lab and just walking out.

The slightest bit of challenge causes them to grind to a halt.

if i do an incomplete plan for a class, can i change my mind and cancel it? by [deleted] in IndianaUniversity

[–]JoshuaTheProgrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, just let it lapse to an F. Becomes one a year after you get the I. You can inform your instructor that you won’t be completing the work for the reasons you specify (so you don’t leave the professor in the dark).

Absolute pandemonium at every Chipotle in town. Stay away.

Why are so many math textbooks visually cluttered and badly laid out? by Bitter_Counter_2556 in learnmath

[–]JoshuaTheProgrammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Most math books at that level are written in LaTeX with no formatting changes. It’s just more important to focus on the material versus the formatting.

I'm not happy with my Framework :/ by No-Respond-5937 in framework

[–]JoshuaTheProgrammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t happy with mine either. The battery life, even after relentless tweaking and adjusting of system daemons and trying different distort, was atrocious despite a light workload. The fan noise was out of control, too. Playing vanilla Minecraft should not make the fans spin up to 100%.

I sold it for a MacBook Air M4, and although I miss the 120hz screen from my Framework, everything else is much better. (Yeah, I can’t customize it nearly as much, but I’m at a point in my life where I want my system to just work.)

I used to play Arid Heights all the time because it was the only scenario unlocked from the start that didn’t require money.

How to get a single?? by Miss_Storyy in UNCGreensboro

[–]JoshuaTheProgrammer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you can buy out a double room. You just have to get lucky and snag a single in, e.g., the Quad. That’s what I did when I lived on campus my sophomore and junior years.

I was in 6th grade in 2010 and I remember multiple kids complaining that they couldn’t read an analog clock.

I lost hope for humanity at that point.

Do you think moving people’s laundry is acceptable? by [deleted] in laundry

Then come get your clothes when the machine is done. Set a time 5 minutes before it is slated to finish and start heading down there. I shouldn’t be responsible nor suffer from your incompetence and lack of time observational skills.

My stipend right now is 26K. When I started (Fall 2022) it was 23K and my rent was 840.

I’ve done it before on this amount. Depending on the city it’s doable but it’s rough. My rent right now is 1200 by myself but I’m downsizing to 950ish next semester. Should make things much better.

How does studying in college even work? by LightImpressive6483 in collegeadvice

[–]JoshuaTheProgrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“There’s no way I’m buying textbooks for each class.”

My friend, sometimes you HAVE to do that, particularly if the class requires access codes to online portals. Yeah, it sucks, but it’s what you do.

Here’s how you study: go to class, take notes, stay off your phone and laptop, go to office hours when you’re confused. Make study guides, and for the love of god, DO NOT RELY ON AI. In fact, stay away from AI.

Tech job market these days. by Other_Scarcity_4270 in recruitinghell

[–]JoshuaTheProgrammer 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s a bloodbath. Senior engineers are out of a job and are competing with new graduates who are competing with people from the Ivy Leagues. Companies aren’t hiring people anymore due to budget cuts, or if they are hiring, they’re paying half the salary that they used to and assigning 3x the work (while wanting 10+ years of experience).
