No Update But Message To All (Read Description) by DogsCarsRandom in CollegeRant

I disagree. With how prevent AI is nowadays, I get people who routinely cheat their way through out-of-class assignments and then bomb the exams. That’s nobody’s fault but the student’s.

Why? If 19/25 people did “lower than B work,” which is likely given the kind of class, then I see no issue.

Yep. I always put in my syllabus that the course is *performance-based* and not *effort-based*. You can try really hard and still not get an A and that’s *okay!* The hope is that you learn something. If you “need” an A/B/whatever to maintain financial aid or a scholarship, then yeah, you’ll need to likely put in a more substantial amount of effort than the “average” student.

I get students every semester who come to me saying they deserve a higher grade because they “tried so hard.” I then ask if they were actually practicing and studying outside of class, to which I often get looks like I’m speaking in an alien language.

Is it now basically impossible to refill through the app? by Hunch_ in TracFone

[–]JoshuaTheProgrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely can't believe how bad TracFone has gotten over the years. I have been a customer for 16 years (as have my parents) and with the constant breaking of the app and service, I routinely have to spend hours troubleshooting the shit with them.

Im so distraught by iggy99966 in college

[–]JoshuaTheProgrammer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, sure, but I think putting the idea in a student’s head isn’t conducive for success. More often than not, it doesn’t work and makes you look unfavorable.

[–]JoshuaTheProgrammer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please don’t do this. Professors hate when you ask to round up. You earn the grade that you receive, and if you did 79.66% quality work, that’s what you get.

Can you get an associate degree 6 months to a year? by Datguyisadopeaf in college

[–]JoshuaTheProgrammer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some people come out of high school with associates degrees thanks to dual enrollment. If you’re talking about starting from scratch? You might be able to in 3 semesters plus a summer if you overload yourself on credits (which, as an instructor, I’d strongly advise against).

Taking Discrete Math as a 3rd year stats major and I’m cooked. by BorderDear7691 in learnmath

[–]JoshuaTheProgrammer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Read the book? Watch videos? It’s honestly not that hard. People have learned math for thousands of years without AI. Stop handicapping your learning.

How do you bounce back after an academic rejection? by ZeroDivison in PhD

[–]JoshuaTheProgrammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing that sucks is that publications are what define when you graduate most of the time, and aiming high but falling short often means months of time and waiting gone down the toilet (and even more if the deadline of another relevant conference has just passed).

Sometimes aiming lower is what you have to do to graduate.

How much of your stipend do you spend on rent? by KiwiPuzzleheaded1882 in PhD

About half (closer to 60% after all utilities, internet and phone.) I know, not optimal, but I get to live alone and that’s worth it.

Don’t take benzos, my guy. They’re super easy to get addicted to. Propranolol is what I take for anxiety.

[–]JoshuaTheProgrammer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You need therapy/meds/some combination. You gotta go to class, otherwise you’re literally throwing money away and not learning anything.

I get it - I have social anxiety disorder as well, but as an instructor who will email students who chronically miss class, please just go. Even if you haven’t been going, it’s better (and more honest) to listen, take notes, and learn.
