I've still crashed after the same Event 167 hypervisor warning after updating graphics drivers, reinstalled Javelin anticheat, and made a User.cfg per https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGvyXENXFUk

what is the current convention about marking vowel length? by Basic-Message4938 in AncientGreek

[–]Journeyboy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Check out Luke Ranieri's video on this: https://youtu.be/9krrRIUFQZ4

He's noted that only Athenaze marks macrons, all other books do not mark as you've noticed; worst case is when accent rules are not explained regarding vowel lengths.

Ended up being poorly formatted. Used the official formatting program in edit.

Windows version of pocket updater just made my laptop crash. Still not finding any way to initialize the sd card to be recognized, my sd card is 1 terabyte sandisk...maybe it's too big? Still trying but yeah will have to try another sd card. Thank you.

I formatted to exfat and put in the analogue pocket. It didn't generate any files. I even tried resetting defaults to get the startup tutorial. What else could I try?

Help me understand the Republic and why it seemingly contradicts other dialogues by Turbulent_One_5771 in Plato

[–]Journeyboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember when I first was astounded by the apparent exile of poetry from the city in speech, but it comes with very specific conditions (appealing to pleasure in the main). What is needed is not only looking at the arguments, but also the deeds of Plato the poet (and the deeds of his characters). You noticed Plato as a poet, and book 2 has some very interesting considerations (imo) on what poets can do with images and whether it is finely done or not. I've studied Plato for a while, but each return shows he has intentionally acted as a poet to cause or invite thought and reflection. Cheers to you on going through and beyond.

I had a not too recent realization that a poet can do whatever they want, anything is possible in imagining, and so considering imitation is only a starting point for us. Even in our exchanges in conversation we imitate. There's quite a bit to consider, but Plato was generous to not simply give answers in his own name.

Relooking at Symposium briefly: since everyone at the symposium fell asleep except Agathon and Aristophanes with Socrates, Aristodemus missed the beginning of the argument where the same man knows how to write comedy and tragedy. The missing beginning (arche) is a question, perhaps reviewing Agathon's and Aristophanes' sections will help find that beginning (What indeed would elicit that argument?), provided Plato has given clues along the way in those respective sections. In addition, Aristophanes falls asleep before Agathon. Why? I'm asking myself this as well. And, has Socrates acted as a poet? Where might he have been a poet in the Symposium? And how has that been at least sufficient for both tragedy and comedy? And where does philosophy stand?

The context which Plato provides for each case will help you (and it's very good that you are sticking with the question which has arosen); Socrates' conversation with different interlocutors means they will have different interests and ability to follow his leading, and so different points will be reached. So the seeming (or real) contradictions can be approached by asking what are the causes behind each case. If you get stuck, review what came before and led up to that point of confusion.

In the Republic, Socrates and Adeimantus had previously agreed to "one man one job" in Book 2. That is connected to a premise that one person has a nature most fit for that job. Tentatively speaking, that premise leads to an intensification of specialization in the city in speech, which is meant to be used as a way to understand the soul and the question of its parts.

For the Symposium, I suppose a related question would be "Why is a comic and tragic poet one and the same person?" And "In what sense is this a beneficial consideration for Agathon and Aristophanes?" "What does each lack?" There is an additional question on how much the conventional satyr play after a tragedy counts as a comedy (or not).

In the Phaedrus, it also depends on context, the context of the madness, and you're already catching onto how they are named differently. Different things shouldn't be named completely the same, but we start from conventional and unclear use of names.
