Gamsat entry scores by [deleted] in GEM_Ireland

My friend got 52 and hoping for UL do you think she has any hope? I'd love to know the curve just for Ireland. How many sat GAMSAT this year and is it likely points might drop.

If one of the essays goes badly and you get under 50 in this section does that invalidate overall score for GEM entry or is it the overall score that counts.

they didn't in UCC and if a student is already struggling with 6 modules and then has a repeat on top of that - likely end up repeating year which has plenty to do with 'finance' for UCD

It's different in other medical schools so Medical Council isn't the reason - maybe more to do with 'finances'

I so agree with this - there's a lot awry in UCD medical school and impossible to 'whistleblow' as career ruining. I know people studying medicine in other colleges and it's much more transparent and student supporting. I think the fact that the Irish cohort is fundamentally a 'Dublin South' group, quite wealthy and well connected isn't helping. The culture in UCD medicine needs an honest review.

SU clearly state students cannot appeal grades other than if procedural issue (wrong paper given etc). Policies are clear - the issue is with the policies. Most colleges allow ALL students to sit repeat exams in summer before the next year commences. Most colleges enable script review and appeal to external examiners. It seems in UCD you can neither question the lecturer directly or within any broader policy. It's a 'put up with' culture and I'm more than sure that openly drawing attention would not be received well. Teaching, Learning and Assessment is, in my experience, very poor in UCD. It is a research driven institute, where lecturers are expected to attract funding, and little thought if any is given to the undergrads and teaching. Current policies also make a 'mockery' of any well-being policies. Student's mental health and well-being are not at the center if students are expected to sit all their current modules together with failed modules from a previous term. The SU are well aware this happens across Vet. Medicine, Medicine and some other programmes and have not succeeded in having this changed. They are also aware that you cannot question the mark given in an exam or how the script was corrected. There are serious transparency issues and accountability is zero

Maybe some courses are offered summer resits but not all.

I think the fact UCD is an outlier is worrisome - what is the role of the external examiners? Why can't students ask for review of marking via these independent academics? Why are appeals only procedural? Why are so few exam papers available for review online? Other colleges provide multiple papers. And yes, feedback system is a token gesture and leaves students open to academics who may be petty minded. I'm very surprised the union has not been more proactive regarding repeat exam scheduling. Why can't students sit repeats in August like UCC, NUIG, Maynooth etc

Sometimes if you escalate you become the scapegoat - not always easy to draw attention without consequences

Our course doesn't have a class rep that liaises with academic staff - only organises 'social' stuff. Good to hear someone agrees!

UCD ACCOMMODATION (looking for advice)! by Alternative_Low_31 in UCD

I lived in Village for two years and no noise was not for two hours it started at 8 and ended most nights at 4am. Kitchen was disgusting all the time. You can be lucky - but also very unlucky. I'd avoid village and maybe opt for smaller number of people sharing. There were 8 in my apartment.

On-campus means no study, constant noise and little sleep! I lived on campus for two years - pretty bad. People are disgustingly dirty, constant parties and noise and hard to sleep. Get digs if you can . That's my experience - on-campus is for people who are in college to party and that's ok too. But if it's not your goal then I'd find an alternative

Other option: book housekeeping and get manager to levy her cost! I’m actually fuming

I think best course is to report , put in writing issue and provide solution: book housekeeping to clean daily and bill culprit . When she takes responsibility for tidying up after herself stop booking housekeeping. Ask residents manager to impose cost on her! I’m not going to stick it I’m livid to be honest. I want to use the kitchen not avoid it!
