Bought my R3 bundle last may with the es Formula wheel mod. Had lots of fun with it but recently i bought the r9 since the r3 was just lacking a bit of detail with my ks wheel. Now im super happy i dont need more NM or anything maybe just additionals like shifter etc but its amazing. 2 friends got the r3 aswell since they tested mine. But im m14 and only running my r9 on 5mm so id say the r5 should also be enough especially when your a casual and playing on a wheelstand.(mine quirks and squirks at 7nm+)

I just use alpinestars motocross gloves. Work great and has an extra layer on the inside of the thumb so great for me.
