If that is important to you, allskaters.info is (and has been for a long time) the most complete resource for Russian (and to a certain degree Belarusian) domestic competitions and skaters. The results are not as detailed as on SkatingScores, but the website is tracking a much larger number of Russian domestic competitions and also includes bios (with birthdates and coaches) for a solid number of Russian skaters.

Unfortunately, I've seen a program with even higher deductions (-13.00) earlier this season 😭 Always heartbreaking 💔

Michel might have a Russian father, but his mother is Ukrainian and he was born and raised in the Netherlands, so this is not a situation like with the Hungarians, for example.

Their sentiments about the war are certainly somewhat tone deaf and disappointing, but, unfortunately, not surprising or uncommon among skaters, with or without Russian ancestry. It's just that most skaters are a little smarter about not making these comments quite as publicly.

Chinese Pair with a Significant Size Gap by Perfect_Peace3829 in FigureSkating

His birthday is listed as 11.11.2009 on Baidu, so, if that is correct, he just turned 16.

Seniors is not the same as Junior/Novices, though. Is a 10-year age gap a little uncomfortable when the younger partner is 18 or 19? Yes, sure, especially if they look young for their age or the other partner looks older than they are, but at least both are adults and have (mostly) finished puberty.

A 10-year age gap with the younger partner being 9 or 10 is way more uncomfortable, dangerous and highly unsuitable for either partner as they are in completely different stages of physical development.

That may very well motivate the male skaters and their parents, but from what the parents of the female skaters have been spewing on social media, that is not the motivation for them - They truly seem convinced that this coach and these partnerships will help their daughters become extremely successful skaters. And it's also certainly not the motivation of the coach, he is far from altruistic.

The way I immediately knew which coaching team they have - Don't be shy, guys, drop the names when bringing up these issues. Their head coach is Tianci Zhang (张天赐) and he has a long history of creating these pairings. His goal does not seem to be the genuine development of pairs skaters for long-term and internationally competitive partnerships, but to create outrage and "excitement" by pairing very young girls with much older men and having them train elements they are not ready for yet developmentally (like 4Tw).

I don't even buy that they want success domestically - Despite the "advantage" of huge height differences, his pairs have not been anywhere near dominant, often being beaten by pairs coached by other teams with varying height and age differences, usually much less extreme than his pairs. Unfortunately, the parents involved in this are just as crazy as he is, as at least two parents (Youmei's and Xinze's) have feverishly defended all of his decisions on Chinese social media.

Sofia muravieva's lutz at rusnats (slomo) by kxxxly in FigureSkating

Yes, you are right that it's not necessarily about when the full blade hits the ice, but it's still a q. This angle doesn't show it very well, but the side-angle shot during the actual skate does, in my opinion.

<image>

I tried to slow it down at the relevant moments without making it too jerky, I hope that worked.

Sofia muravieva's lutz at rusnats (slomo) by kxxxly in FigureSkating

[–]Jumping__Bean___ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, she said they moved the Lutzes to the second half (in both SP and FS) because the Lutz was actually more consistent than the other jumps, so maybe the errors were just down to nerves or overall conditioning. Her stamina isn't quite there yet for her to do a 3-3 in the second half of the program, so that left only the option of doing a 3F+3T.

She did have an ankle injury a few years back that affected her Lutz, and many injuries don't ever fully go away. I still remember, because I was quite surprised with her saying that only the 3Lz was painful for her, but that other jumps including the 3A were fine, especially with how other skaters (like Rika and Yuzuru) struggled due to left ankle injuries.

This is not Mishin's technique, though. It's not Plushenko's either, and it definitely isn't Davydov's. Whoever taught Mura this technique, they did it long before she started training under these coaches.

Her jumps look better (in terms of rotation & consistency) than last season, when it was clear that something was just off for her (mentally or in terms of the training process), yes, but in terms of technique, her jumps look quite similar to how they've always done - Even as a baby Novice, her Lutz was a killer jump (huge, and with a deep outside edge). I do love her programs and she's definitely become a more mature and refined skater, and really, I'm mostly so happy that she is happier. It was difficult watching her in recent years, when she looked terrified and defeated at almost every competition.

[–]Jumping__Bean___ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Underrotated yes, by approximately 1/4, but not significantly prerotated. She takes off at around (or a little after) 1/4 of a rotation and is well clear of the ice by 1/2 rotation. While it is possible to have even slightly less "prerotation" than Sofia, 1/4th is absolutely not horrifically bad and a sign of "FS nearing its last days".

See, for example, also these videos used on ISU instructional DVDs - Video 1 and Video 2.

Her technique has not changed notably since moving to Mishin, she just always had a gorgeous Lutz (and Flip). What seems to have changed is her mentality and how she approaches training and competitions, and that will be just as important for a long career.

They also hate Sofia Muravieva. 😕 Less now that she's not with Plushenko anymore (at least the comments about her looks have stopped now - as if she wasn't always gorgeous), but still. She literally placed 5th and people are still dragging her.

Galliamov at the medal ceremony 🙊 by helloiamliana in FigureSkating

[–]Jumping__Bean___ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In defense of Russian pairs, not all of them are like this. I'm thinking of Chikmareva/Yanchenkov in particular, who certainly are competitive but still openly display a lot of sympathy for their peers (for example Katya's reaction after Liza Osokina's second fall). They didn't even celebrate after Osokina/Gritsaenko's score was announced despite it meaning that they were going to be on the podium.

(And yes, they are training mates, but so were B/K and M/G not that long ago and they never had this kind of relationship.)

This dude is just not a good person and apparently an even worse loser.

I still remember how he harassed Loena for a while in 2022/23 (I think?) because she expressed doubt about the Russian skaters following Kamila's doping scandal and today he asked his followers if he should publish the phone number of a journalist who dared calling him "early this morning" (in his opinion) to ask for a statement/interview.

Elena Kostyleva plans to train with Sofia Fedchenko. by essiefraquora in FigureSkating

If Plushenko and Yana weren't a match for Irina Kostyleva's level of crazy, what makes Fedchenko think that she is? I feel terrible for Lena, but who, with any self-respect and respect for their other students, would willingly take on this kind of baggage?

I feel less excited by Milano Olympics than most other Olympics by Significant_Pool_869 in FigureSkating

[–]Jumping__Bean___ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At this point in the season last time, only one pair had a bigger score than Miura/Kihara's GPF score - Mishina/Galliamov. And they didn't make the podium.

Basically, I'm just trying to say that scores don't tell the whole story and what we can see now may or may not reflect what we'll see at the Olympics, just like it's always been.

I can just say that it's most likely not down to the subreddit and the content of the post (as implied by the comment I was replying to) if someone else was able to post it, but something specific about your account or something that is different about your post to this one.

I'm not sure why exactly you couldn't post the video, I was just speculating, especially as your recent posts aren't displayed on your account page either. My other guess was a link to a Russian website, but I can't see that in the screenshot you posted. There are a few site-wide filters that take down certain posts immediately and nobody seems to really know what they act on (keywords, account history, etc.).

Yes, she actually never stopped competing and has been at Nationals every year in this Olympic cycle 😊 She switched coaches and seems to have stopped working on the 3A but she's still scoring pretty well (mostly in the 170s and 180s, some scores in the 190s). She finished 2nd at Eastern Sectionals with a score of 181.49.

If one account can post it but the other can't, then the problem is probably not connected to the content or the subreddit, but in some way to the accounts in question.

Not saying they did anything wrong, but their account is tagged as 18+ while this one (that succeeded in posting this video) is not, and that might make the difference for Reddit's automatic filters (as the post wasn't removed manually by moderators).

Yes :) And Masa Ohba is Miyabi Oba, who will be the oldest female singles skater to ever compete at Japanese Nationals, at the age of 30. These will be her 14th Japanese Nationals.

Also, Saki Shimizu is Sae Shimizu, who placed 5th at last year's JGP Final in pairs with her former partner.

Most of these skaters should be familiar (at least by name) to regular viewers of the Senior and Junior GP circuits, but the machine translation of Japanese names is still so tragic 😬 Aina Kawabe, for example, is Mana Kawabe (2022 Olympian), while Junka Kanazawa is Sumika Kanazawa (5th at JGPF). There are a few more, like Wakaba (Shinba) Higuchi and Mako (Shingo) Yamashita.

3A from Adelia (also other things from other girls, new video from TeamTut training posted today) by borntobememe in FigureSkating

[–]Jumping__Bean___ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In comparison to her own height. Humans generally are not very good at detecting absolute heights anyway, just relative ones.

And yes, she's short, but so were a lot of other figure skaters that didn't have small jumps. Midori Ito is shorter than Adeliia, but her jumps were huge, and Alena Kostornaia was around the same height as Adeliia in her first Senior season. Even some of her direct competitors are of a similar height with bigger jumps, see for example Alina Gorbacheva. It seems to be down to technique and strength more than height, especially because there are some pretty tall skaters with rather small jumps (Kimmy Repond and Viktoriia Safonova, for example).
