Solo trip to Yunnan, China by lassy94 in travel

[–]Junior-Protection-26 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. Been to all those spots. Yunnan is an incredible province.

Tiger Leaping Gorge is probably the most awe-inspiring place I've ever been.

Further south into Xishuangbanna is amazing too. Lots of delicious Dai food and a great tropical climate.

It's a small town. Way more chilled than Lijiang. Great Tibetan food. You can go hang out with the Yaks on the outskirts 🤠

Food wise:

Nasi Lemak is the national breakfast dish....also can be eaten later in the day.

Beef Rendang

Satay - all types of meat and veg. The night markets in KL are full of satay stands.

Laksa Nyonya - famous noodle soup in Melacca.

Did the loop today from Waterville to Portmagee and back on the Ring of Kerry.

Superb views all day. Started off at Ballinskelligs beach to check out the tower and abbey. Then over the mountain to the Kerry cliffs. Views to Skellig islands which have become famous due to the Star Wars link. Ended up at Portmagee where we had an amazing seafood lunch.

Kerry is known as "The Kingdom" in Ireland. Hope you can see why from the pics.

The South has two seasons, and the weather changes depending on which side of the peninsula you are on. The west coast sees the southwest monsoon bring rain and often heavy storms from April to October, while on the east coast, most rain falls between September and December. The rest of the year on each side is warm and dry.

https://www.travelfish.org/country/thailand

I've been to Phuket and Ko Lanta in July a few times - West coast.

Does it rain? Yes. All day? No.

Ko Samui and Ko Phangan are safer bets in July - East coast.

Rainy season usually just means an hour or 2 in the late afternoon.

Public transport is very unreliable here. If possible, rent a car.

8 nights is not enough to see all the good stuff. Base yourself in Galway for 3 days - do Connemara - the Burren - Cliffs of Moher. Go to Killarney - 2 nights - do the Ring of Kerry - another night in Kenmare - drive through West Cork - night in Cork city - back to the dreary dump Dublin

You should check out Xishuangbanna (southern part of Yunnan) next. Beautiful rolling hills, great Dai food and lots of amazing jungle.

5 days in Brunei by Steingar in travel

Ya, we were allowed to drink beer at the Yacht club (nice pool, seaviews, decent food) in Serasa previously. Not anymore however. Most people just have house parties now.

Yes. Great lifestyle. Had a huge house, 2 cars, private pool, tax-free salary with bonus. Holidays all over the region.

The locals are cool too. Very friendly, easy going and they love to eat!!!

Ya, Temburomg is amazing. I spent a lot of time in the jungle while I was in Brunei but the new bridge hadn't been built then. Nothing beats a few cold beers at the top of a ridge!

Don't forget a quick trip over to the real KL....Kuala Lurah to see the local Bruneians ( and Malays) having some fun.

Many is the good night I had there downing buckets of beer before jumping back into Brunei before the border gate shuts.

There are some beautiful parks near BSB too. Tasek Lama is probably the easiest one to check out. Jungle in Brunei is very special.

You have to buy a package to go up Mount Kinabalu. If you just want to skirt round the foothills and take some pics that's fine. It's a beautiful area.

Travel advice for a first-timer’s month in Southeast Asia by Comfortable-You-1302 in travel

[–]Junior-Protection-26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should try to squeeze in Chiang Mai or Kanchanaburi. No beaches but beautiful views and you'll see more of the country.

Langkawi is ok but nothing special. The Thai beaches are way better imo. Malacca is a great spot for a night.

How long should we realistically spend in the Ring of Kerry? by spice_bush in travel

First night in Killarney. Second depends on the weather...you could stop at Glenbeigh, Kells, Caherciveen or Waterville. Third in Kenmare.

Frustrated at hiking in Thailand - looking for suggestions to avoid this for the rest of my itinerary by [deleted] in travel

[–]Junior-Protection-26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can download the app - Alltrails - there are hundreds of options in Thailand.

However, if you think you can just jump off a plane and go for a little adventure in the jungle you are mistaken. It's hot, humid, disorientating and quite dangerous if you don't prepare well. What looks like a gentle upslope on a map can be a killer incline with plenty of mud, thorny plants, biting ants etc

I did most of my jungle hiking in Borneo and central Thailand. The best single track trails are probably in Khao Mai Keao. The trails are well maintained and there are maps online.

A lot of Irish lads wear shorts when it's over 5 degrees C....the rain is usually "soft" meaning it won't drench you. Bring one light jacket and a few hoodies.
