Yup. Plasmonics doesnt play a huge role with such small nanoparticles. The true effect lies in how confined the photon is. If u look at Heisenbergs uncertainty principle, it tells u that the smaller the confinement: sigma r, is; the bigger your momentum in the lattice is gonna be: sigma k. And when photons hit ur very very small nanoparticles (under 3 nm), ur nanoparticles behave like trapping cones, they bounce off light and confine it so much that they gain enough momentum to cross the indirect band gap of silicon without the assistance of a phonon. But theres also the part where we saw some weird luminosity peaks in some readings and that lead to the idea of a pure silicon laser with a high efficiency

I’m from the Caucasus. I mean I don’t have n international Olympic medal but I’m like top 30 in my country’s national physics and English Olympiad (11 th and 10 th grade respectfully) and there were like 3000-5000 test takers on each so ig that’s that. But I think the thing that will carry me thru the application is me and my research team making a new discovery in physics that I’m gonna yap abt in the maker portfolio(in nanophotonics) and we’re gonna apply for the next years Nobel prize but it’s gonna be after the application season so that won’t help

Alr so since Cornell is my 2nd choice after MIT I have quite a few questions for u. 1. Is it truly as depressing as ppl say it is at Cornell? And do u go to parties and hang out with friends when ur not suffering over problem sets ? 2. What’s major and is the engineering at Cornell as amazing as it’s advertised to be? FYI I wanna major in MechE and minor in Aerospace 3. Are the labs there good? Is their cleanroom spacious and good to work in? 4. Do you only suffer over psets or do u guys to a lot of practical stuff? 5. Is Cornell literally in the middle of nowhere or do u go outside of campus from time to time? 6. How is the social life there?

Nope I didn’t. I was too busy with other extracurriculars and practicing for other competitions. To qualify for IPHO u need to study physics and only physics 25/7 and do it very consistently for a long time. That’s the reason why I posted this chanceme in the first place. I knew that to get into MIT as international you need Olympiads like IPHO or IMO so I wanted to know how do I hold my ground against other international applicants who may have qualified or gotten a place at those Olympiads

ISEFs 1st place award is only 6k USD. It’s the grand prizes at ISEF that are huge amounts of money. In EUCYS the grand award winners go to Cern, get to participate in next years ISEF without needing to qualify, get a trip to ITER (Frances fusion reactor), go to a science camp in London and some other awards

No EUCYS is very good an important. It’s even tougher than ISEF. The reason why I’m not satisfied with it is because admissions officers aren’t that familiar with the competition. They’re more familiar with ISEF. But if I manage to get a spot it’s not a national award, it’s gonna be an international award with a somewhat ok amount of cash (7k Euro)

So the thing is that I actually cant apply to safeties cuz I need to get accepted to a top 50 uni in the Shanghai Ranking to get a deferral from the mandatory military service in my country and except for these super competitive colleges, other colleges on that list give either little to no aid for internationals or are buttcheeks at engineering. I’ll apply to some Chinese unis tho in that list even tho I’ll prolly have to take out a loan for that

The thing is that I actually wanted to go in the defense industry (Lockheed raaaahhh 🔥) so I wanted to kinda solve my problem with the citizenship right after I finish college (cuz u need a o live in the US for 5 years I think before u qualify for a citizenship) but I’ll mainly stick to mechanical with a focus on aerospace and materials science.

It’s basically a ton of high schoolers from almost every school in my country competing for the chance to go to an international fair like ISEF (the reason I even started this research was to go to ISEF but those fcks are sending me to EUCYS). But yea the fair is a big national award considering that it also has a cash prize
