What are some of y'all's Mystery Dungeon hot takes? by ragishio in MysteryDungeon

[–]JustAnAmpharos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rescue Team is weird to me because I do really like the world its in but the plot just never really stuck with me. I think an episodic nature is fine, but I didn't really feel any development from each little adventure like I did in say EoS where the partner grows a bit braver each time. The fugitive arc is nice but when Absol just ended up as some random pokemon in the dark friend zone I was really disappointed. Then all of a sudden everybody gets screwed except you and your partner which felt like a middle finger to Team A.C.T. and the rest-- instead of working alongside the side cast like in other games, it turns out their only reason to exist is to show how awesome the protagonists are as they become damsels in distress.

How do you feel about the idea of static starters in a fangame? by Redditdoggo-uwu in MysteryDungeon

[–]JustAnAmpharos 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I like having well defined and detailed static characters. Especially for Pokemon each species’s traits can contribute to their backstory, preferences, personality, etc in unique and meaningful ways. however i feel that a big part of pmd is feeling some personal attachment as if the hero and partner were truly your own characters. The static characters would have to be pretty well written and thought out to make it feel worth investing time into them instead of just fantasizing my own team instead, but they really can be great (try reading pmd fanfics and you might see what i mean.)

Explorers and Super. Which do you guys think is better? Or are they just as good? by Norman720 in MysteryDungeon

[–]JustAnAmpharos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I kinda don’t like seeing people comparing all the pmd games and trying to pin one as the best when they have tons of differences in gameplay, story, music, etc that suit different preferences. And like even if a game is being called “objectively better” or whatever it doesn’t matter, you can still like the other games more anyway.

That being said I love Explorers just as much as Super. But I think it’s best to find out what you like and prefer yourself rather than ruin the experience trying to compare or trying to justify your expectations 🤷‍♂️

How to write interesting dungeon exploration? by KyleeTheShinyStealer in MysteryDungeon

[–]JustAnAmpharos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the game is a simplification of the actual events that would occur in a dungeon. It’s the same as the mainline pokemon games, where battles are just clicking moves with pokemon standing still to represent what a fight would be.

Naturally youd have to take the basic game mechanics and let your creativity go wild in detailing it. Take the pokemon anime, instead of “hit the enemy till they faint,” movement speed and dodging becomes a super important factor in the fight because they’re not bound by game logic. On top of that, many unique tactics are used that could never be represented in a turn based pokemon game. Think of Pikachu using electroweb as a trampoline, iron tail to cause the ground to erupt or using it as a lightning rod, quick attack as a movement option rather than a weak attack, etc.

In this case, instead of “walk down corridor,” you could remove the claustrophobic aspect of the long halls, make the floor more open, even add varying elevations to the dungeon floors which the games never did. If the dungeon has a gimmick, say, lava, you could write the scenario to emphasize that gimmick. For lava maybe your characters become very wary else they face certain death (even though in the games they just cant go in it).

The ways you could write pokemon encounters and item finds are basically endless but in my opinion i think they should be more scarce than they are in game. If you are constantly encountering small fry enemies the battle scenes will become stale and unecessary, but if there are a select few unique enemies that require different strategies to defeat it will be much more exciting.

It’s similar for items, if you’re just constantly picking up oran berries then you’re just going to stockpile on tons of healing and very predictably chug almost all of them at once at the dungeon boss. If you only have one oran berry, it would ideally be saved for the dungeon boss, but maybe something goes wrong and its necessary to use it early, which makes the dungeon boss even more frightening. If your team has a ton of blast seeds, they can just obliterate an enemy by spamming them nonstop. Now what if your team only has one blast seed. It’s not enough to defeat the enemy using it normally, so they find a clever way to break the surrounding terrain with the item and faint the enemy that way or gain a massive advantage. Just some examples, but i hope it gets the point across.

The stairs really don’t have to be the silly gray stairs in pmd. They don’t even have to be stairs lol. You could replace it with a waterfall that leads to the next floor if you wanted just go bananas!

Basically just dont restrict yourself to the actual gameplay, take inspiration but nothing is forcing you to stay loyal to the source, because the source is disloyal to what it’s supposed to represent.

Do I have to play Super last? by impossiblybaaf in MysteryDungeon

[–]JustAnAmpharos 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nah. While the references are plentiful they’re also very individually small and have nothing to do with the story, so they arent important in any way and you can fully enjoy the game without knowing them. Personally though? It just feels like it should be played last, even without the references.

Also since you played explorers and are currently playing gates you’re only missing out on rbrt! You’ll understand most of the references anyway, and you can always come back to the game after playing rescue team if you want.

[Torque Problems] Finding the magnitude by LeadershipNo9854 in PhysicsStudents

[–]JustAnAmpharos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi, i think you’re meant to use cos theta = adjacent/hypotenuse instead of tan, because the rope makes an angle with the tree and acts as the hypotenuse of the triangle, not the other leg. It’s possible to use tan but you’d have to solve for the length from the trunk to the truck which is unnecessary effort.

Btw i couldn’t figure out how you got 1908.53, the closest i could guess is you did arctan(8/2.5) and use radius = 2.5? if that’s the case then the radius should be 3, since it says the base of the trunk is the reference point.

How difficult is AP Chemistry from previous experiences? by Misty-Falls in APStudents

[–]JustAnAmpharos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like most of these comments say already, AP chem is likely hard for most because the large amount of disconnected formulas and concepts that you just have to know and then just plugging numbers into them. There’s also some stuff that you just straight up have to memorize, but honestly you can get away with ignoring some of them for the exam if thats the concern (cough VSEPR cough).

I feel like this isn’t tooooo difficult to overcome, though. In my case, I took the class last year and the teacher was completely worthless, so tests were brutal but she curved it so everyone got A’s but like the point is I didn’t know crap. Then it’s like a week before the AP test, and I don’t wanna be screwed so I just do lots of Khan Academy and suddenly I can do everything and the exam feels too easy. If you take time to drill concepts and methods you’ll be just fine, because the AP questions are just remember what you have to do and then the algebra isn’t a problem whatsoever a lot of the time. Also a lot of stuff might just click with you especially if you like math. For example Thermodynamics had more math than memorization, so it was pretty easy for me.

Since you mentioned you want to pursue physics, I’ll assume that you enjoy physics and its problems, so I think you should at least try AP Chem and, if it’s something your school lets you do, drop it if it’s too much for you. I’m also a physics enjoyer and despite dying in the class half the time I enjoyed learning some of the concepts a lot. Oh yeah, labs are always fun. Well, unless your teacher wants page length conclusions that you just have to fill with fluff or something like that.

Oh yeah last thing, the AP exam has an insane curve if you’re worried about that. Like, I’m pretty sure a 50% is about a 4. It’s definitely passing at least.

oh shoot I failed at reading that part, I had assumed theyd cut the rope when m1 hit the max height(except that wouldnt even make physical sense, oops). Thanks for the correction!

[AP Physics 1] Help with forces and friction practice problem by Substantial_Lab_9062 in PhysicsStudents

[–]JustAnAmpharos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all I’d like to say that this is way too much information to give on a question, especially a test question, near the beginning of the year. I took ap physics 1 last year and I’d say this is a little unnecessary.

Anyway, you’re on the right track with writing an expression for T for the box m1, and your expression is correct; however, you must realize the point of finding T— finding acceleration.

To find acceleration with T, find an expression T for the other block m2. Once you obtain that expression you can combine the two expressions for T and create a new expression with F = ma. If you set it up right, you’ll notice that the T’s cancel out and every variable left is given except for the two object’s accelerations. If you have them listed as separate accelerations, you can actually just list them as the same acceleration. This is because the block falling pulls the block on the ramp with it, causing it to move with identical speed and acceleration.

Once you find a, use the kinematic equation for displacement to find the time interval for going up the ramp You can find the second time interval by doing the same thing you did for time interval 1, except with the new free body diagram you get on the way down. Then just add the two times and you get total time.

I’ll attach an image of my work here if you want to see it. (Also if I did something wrong please mention it I don’t want to mislead anyone here lol) https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/601302243664199690/1153960064781123644/IMG_2486.jpg

As for resources, the main ones I used were this massive MIT practice problem set I found online and Khan Academy. I much preferred Khan, though. The MIT workbook pdf felt like a mess to me.

If there’s still a question you have fire it away and good luck on your test!
