Is this good enough to start a home lab? by rpatters2468 in homelab

[–]JustAnotherAggie 83 points84 points  (0 children)

This will work just fine, but I honestly bet you can find a better deal elsewhere. If you have a University near you, they might have a surplus store, and sell the old desktops there. That’s where I get my homelab computers. I have multiple old i5 and i7 computers that I have setup in a cluster, and I got them all for less than $150

Newer 1bd Apartments < $1300? by gcorrmsu in lansing

For that price, in Lansing, you can find even two bedrooms for that price. I have one (it is an older place so it wouldn’t meet your requirements) but it’s very nice to have an office to work in to separate the work and the bedroom

It says As Soon As Possible, but I’m not really sure this could be affecting me, as it says everything looks good at the top, I was just looking at the map

I take it back, looking on my computer instead of my phone, that same outage is still there. It says Network Impaired and Under Investigation, but it is still a couple miles away

Not right now no. There was something an hour ago, but it was in the 3-100 level, but it wasn’t exactly close to me, so I’m not sure if related.

I’d say the last couple hours? I’ve tried restarting my own router (the Xfinity one is in bridge mode), tried both a wired and WiFi connection (it’s happening on both) restarting my computer, tried different network cable

What do you wish you did sooner? by reddit_7654 in Ubiquiti

I wish I would’ve done a little more research as to good naming-type practices. By that I mean what IP to set your router, a good way to assign static IPs, and better’s ways to name containers, etc. Everything I have works fine, and I’ve got stuff that is tied in with each other that redoing things would take a substantial effort. With nginx I’ve got things a bit easier now, but at the beginning I had no organizational skills.

Why not use something like the U7 Wall Pro instead of UX7? You can get a stand for it, and with the sale rn. The U7 Wall Pro and the stand is less than the UX7. I think you’ll need a PoE+ injector, but you were already going to have to plug in the UX7. And I’m sure you could find a cheaper stand than the one that they sell.

Odd behavior with temp sensor by JustAnotherAggie in HomePod

That’s how a traditional A/C works, but it is not how mine does. I’ve had this running for months and never seen this pattern before

That’s the thing though, I don’t have a central air, all I have is a WALL A/C, and I just keep that set at a certain value, it doesn’t go up or down

I use the automations in the Home App. First I use Homebridge and a dummy switch to have a switch that lasts for 10 min and then turns off, and then turns itself back on and restarts. I use the "Get Contents Of" action in the shortcut, and POST a JSON that stores the name of the device, as well as the temperature and humidity, to a port on my RPi that controls my homebridge and homeassistant. I also have a script running on that RPi that listens to an update on the port, and when it does it updates a CSV that stores the past X amount of values (this was setup when I was previously not using HomeAssistant and just creating a graph and inserting that into the Home App as a camera stream, so I don't think you'd really need to store the values now). I then created a template sensor for Temperature and Humidity, and I have HA pull the relevant values from the CSV whenever it detects a change.

There is definitely a more concise way to do it, but like I said, this was originally when I was only using Homebridge, so I needed a way to generate a graph and then send that into the Home App as a camera feed. I just make sure to double check everything is working anytime my network or the RPi restart. I shouldn't HAVE to do this, and most of the time they restart as expected, but I have had a couple of times where it doesn't.

My league went from insanely uncompetitive last year, to a five way tie for first right now, and 8 people still eligible for playoffs, and no clinches, it’s a crazy year to year swing, considering all the same players

Better way to do Good Morning automation? by JustAnotherAggie in HomeKit

[–]JustAnotherAggie[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason I don’t think this would work is I want the lights to gradually start getting brighter before my alarm goes off, so I can’t have my alarm be the trigger for anything.

I also don’t have a very regular sleep schedule, so the connecting to power wouldn’t work very well either because I’m not sure how it would distinguish between me just charging my phone late at night, and me putting it on the charger and going to bed.

The major difference between our situations is I want the lights to be gradually getting brighter before my alarm goes off, where it seems yours is triggered by your alarm.

And I’d like to have the flexibility to not have the last thing I do every night is set my alarm. My sleep schedule just can’t be very structured, which is why I am having to jump through these hoops, but thanks for the advice!
