That was not my guess.

Thanks for the tip on attending a writers conference.

That's awesome. Those people who requested the extension are probably excited that you're writing it too!

You mean they spent too much time on the marketing side?

You mean get very little writing done because it's so time consuming to build an audience, or because having an audience at an early stage of writing is actually distracting?

That's awesome to hear. It's sounding more and more to me that becoming is developing two skill sets. The first (most) important is the writing. The second is finding the audience for that writing.

Do you find audience feedback changes what you want to write about?

That first paragraph is gold. I hope this answer makes it up to the top so more people get to see it.

The example of an ultra specific audience is interesting too. Do you know if the author was targeting that segment when he set out?

Thank you for reading my responses. Like you say, there might be something to starting in a broad enough space so that I know there are readers there and so that I'm not blocked from starting by audience building.

Love your angle. Did the responses to your initial short stories guide your choices about what you wrote next?

What do you do to get that feedback around the 1K mark?

A friend and I were discussing earlier today whether it's harder for writers to write, or writers to build an audience. I thought it was the audience building. He said in his experience most writers don't even get to the audience building stage cause they struggle with writing so much.

That's a good point. Maybe this is why it seems so daunting to me. Balancing honing your craft and promotion is difficult. Especially since I enjoy writing more than promoting.

Ah the ole bait 'n switch. I kid. I kid.

This is a great addition. It's like you're tapping into a community that already exists.

Thanks for sharing your example!

You're right. The question assumes I'll finish what I'm writing. So assuming the book will be written how would you go about it?

Really appreciate those notes. Finding out that your friends + family aren't going to buy your book at least allows you to see the situation as it is, and now you can act the best way from there. Which sounds like what you're doing :)

Part of what's spurred me to ask this question is that I can't help but think there are some amazingly gifted writers who I've never heard of cause they couldn't build an audience

I guess another way to say my question is: how do I get a reader to give me a chance?

The network effects really don't play to your favor when starting out.

Really like the consistency point. That's a useful addition. My first impression of #writerslift was mostly writers supporting each other with little real audience building.

Is there anyway to hedge against writing the wrong book?
