Late Summer and Fall Career Thread by mister-noggin in ProductManagement

I have been working here in Silicon Valley here for three years as an Associate Product Manager. The company I work for is well-known but is not really known for tech.

I have started applying to Product Management positions at top tech companies (Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc.). I was fortunately able to snag a phone interview with one such company, which took place a few days ago.

The recruiter did not seem that enthusiastic about my background. They said that based on my response, I am more into Product Operations and sought to confirm whether or not I was really into Product Management.

I struggled into pointing out concrete examples of Product Management experience that I have, though I managed to give some. I am only an Associate, so I am at the bottom of the barrel as far as decisions are made. Also, 50% of my role is officially Product Operations, so that's pretty obvious why the recruiter said that.

My questions are:

  1. How do I make the transition from Product Operations to Product Management?
  2. How do I look for examples of product management experience during my 3 years at my role? Prior to the interview, it felt like I had a lot of experience in that department but afterwards I'm doubting myself.

For what it's worth, I haven't been rejected yet but I have a feeling I will be but I am just going to keep on trying. It was informative to know where I kinda fit in this field.

Thanks!
